Slow '22kw' charge, high price, awful UX

A '22kw' charger gave me a measly 20 miles range in 1hr 20 mins, for £6. Don't believe anyone saying 22kw will give you 90 miles.
Terrible UX before I got the charge. PAYG instructions are not on the control unit but buried on an illegible non-responsively designed website, forcing an app download or finding yourself on a map, then registration with full contacts and address (Android autocomplete was part disabled), then I had to reload the app, then pay. I had to opt out of their spam twice. Process takes nearly 10 minutes! The designer of that UX should be ashamed. A standard Ubitricity 7kw lampost charger gives me the same charge in the same time, costs much less and you pay via a QR code without registration in 30 seconds. And why do they take £50 up front, when others take £25? SL requires a special card and a subscription to reduce fees so they match other non-subscription services. It's 2024...

Avoid Source London at all costs. Idle charges are astronomical!

Avoid Source London at all costs. I used it overnight plugged in on a quiet lane in London during the Christmas break. Cost me £67 for one night! (£15 worth of charging, the rest all idle fees). Doesn't make it clear that you are going to paying so much when the car is sitting in a space overnight. I appreciate there needs to be a charge for idle but its way too much. I wont be using it again and I would advise anyone else to avoid at all costs.

We are sorry to hear that you have not had a good experience.

When your vehicle receives little or no energy for longer than 10 minutes, an email is issued to you to inform you that idle fees may apply.

Standard idle fees are charged at 5p/min (6p/min in the Central London Surcharge zone: Camden, Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster).

Please note that energy fees continue to apply at all times.

Idle fees do not apply from 12AM (midnight) to 7AM for registered Source London Members.

Details of our different memberships can be found at www.sourcelondon.net/offers.

Customers can choose one of several affordable subscription packages tailored for individuals, companies, residents, and licensed drivers. Benefits of subscribing include lower energy fees, reduced idle fees, and the ability to reserve bays ahead of time.

We sold our electric car recently and needed to cancel our subscription, but this seems to be impossible, despite trying to contact Source London on several occasions. Surely this is borderline illegal?

The phrase left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing springs to mind!! I have been trying to sign up to the resident tariff now for well over a month and I've now received conflicting emails on about three occasions. The first tells me the subscription has been set up and my card is on it's way; a day later I get another saying they can only process and approve the subscription when I upload a copy of my parking permit

Avoid Source Electric Chargers at all cost.charge

Went to London and needed a charge. Chargers from all vendors were full and was surprised to find these chargers empty and available.
I followed the instructions on the pump and registered and connected.
4 times I tried and the pump would not communicate with my VW EGolf.
I gave up and went to another vendor and it worked 1st time.
Very disgruntled when I found that Source have charged me £49 for each attempt at charging. That £200 taken straight out my account.
It's now 3 day's later and on calling them I'm told up to 10 days to get money back.
I will never go to a charge point run by them ever again.
Risk is too high
Nothing wrong with my car or the charge cable as used the same at the next pump.
CMon Source! It's 2023....get with the program!
I think others must have had a poor experience as it was unusual those pumps were free. When all others in the area were full...
Update: Thanks for the reply from Source
Not a sorry that our charger didn't work.......
Just someone else fault about the refund.
How about you send me and the wife a voucher for the 40 minutes I wasted at your charger...

Hi, sorry that you've had a bad experience.

For Source London Pay As You Go customers, a fixed amount of £49 is pre-authorised, or reserved, in the customer’s bank account at the start of each charging session.

We notify our payment partners to release pre-authorised funds immediately after a successful payment or within an hour if the transaction is cancelled. Our payment partners then instruct the customer’s bank to release the funds from pre-authorisation.

Funds reserved in pre-authorisation can be released by the bank within an hour, however, some banks take longer, sometimes up to 30 days. Unfortunately, the time your bank takes to release pre-authorised funds is outside of Source London’s control.

We urge customers who experience a prolonged delay with the release of pre-authorisation funds (more than a few days) to contact their bank.

Poor service, very poor advice

No notification that my membership card expired. Told by Source customer services to use Pay as You Go. Due to Source technical fault PAYG failed to work twice. 2 x £49 taken from my bank due to failed attempts. Customer services lady tells me to go to another charging point and try again, expecting me to now have 3 x £49 taken from my bank.

I asked for a subject access request of the recorded telephone conversation at which point the customer services lady ends the call, cut me off. Do not open an account with Source would be my advice, i will now happily find an alternative and will be filing a complaint after hopefully finding out who regulates this service. Shocking experience this morning.

I was told their website is down but within 10 seconds they have taken 2 x £49 from my bank and expected me to try again for a third amount of £49 yet admitting it was their technical error not a fault caused by me.

Disappointed and shocked at such poor customer service and ongoing technical issues.

When responding @source please do not send me chapter and verse about banking policy and not getting my money back for 10 days, outrageous for your customer services to encourage me to try again for another £49 when your technical issues caused the problem. Yet absolutely no problem taking my money. Cannot remember the last time I complained about a service or recommended not to use a service or company.

I am requesting you send me a copy of the recorded call this morning. Advise if you need a subject access report to action this.

Impossible to get registration on their Resident scheme as they want a parking permit from the council - which doesn't provide them any more as it's all gone digital.

£49 paid, I’ll wait a month for the refund

£49 paid, car hooked up, charging station goes into maintenance mode. Not the first time this has happened. The £49, customer services will tell you will be back in 7-10 days. IT IS NOT! They hold the money for a month. If you tell customer services this, they basically call you a liar.

Hi Claire, sorry that you are having issues accessing the network.

The funds you refer to have been pre-authorised by your bank and unfortunately we are not able to influence when your bank releases the hold on these funds. We notify our payment partners to release pre-authorised funds immediately after a successful payment or within an hour if the transaction is cancelled or unsuccesful. We recommend speaking with your bank. Please see the notes below which may help.

Pre-authorisation refers to a temporary hold or reservation placed on funds in a customer’s bank account. Pre-authorised funds do not leave the customer’s bank account, but these funds will not be available until the pre-authorisation is complete.

Pre-authorisation only applies to our Pay As You Go (PAYG) customers.

Why is pre-authorisation used?

Pre-authorisation allows customers to use services when the final value of the transaction is unknown. Pre-authorisation is common practice for things like fuel, car-rentals, and hotels. Pre-authorisation also protects service providers from potentially fraudulent transactions, for example, if a customer does not have adequate funds available to pay for a transaction in full.

How does pre-authorisation work at Source London?

For Source London Pay As You Go customers, a fixed amount of £49 is pre-authorised, or reserved, in the customer’s bank account at the start of each charging session.

As soon as a charging session is complete, we process the payment for the actual amount due and notify our payment partners to release the previously reserved funds.

How soon are pre-authorisation funds released?

We notify our payment partners to release pre-authorised funds immediately after a successful payment or within an hour if the transaction is cancelled. Our payment partners then instruct the customer’s bank to release the funds from pre-authorisation.

Funds reserved in pre-authorisation can be released by the bank within an hour, however, some banks take longer, sometimes up to 30 days. Unfortunately, the time your bank takes to release pre-authorised funds is outside of Source London’s control.
What can I do to get these funds released sooner?

Unfortunately, the time your bank takes to release pre-authorised funds is outside of Source London’s control. We urge customers who experience a prolonged delay with the release of pre-authorisation funds (more than a few days) to contact their bank.

What is MangoPay?

Source London work with MangoPay as our payment provider. MangoPay are an intermediary between Source London and our customer’s banks. MangoPay process debit card payments on behalf of Source London.

When speaking with your bank, please note that Source London pre-authorisations and payments may be processed using the name MangoPay or MGP.

Don't subscribe - use BP or Shell instead

I have just cancelled my subscription with Source London. Their chargers are often down despite showing as available on the app, there are times where I've booked a charger only to arrive and see it's already being used and their customer service is just shockingly slow. It takes ages to get through to anyone on the phone (I was on hold for 45 minutes before someone answered the phone) and then, through no fault of his own, he hardly spoke any English which made our communication very difficult.
Additionally their app is just one of the worst I've ever used. Both invoices and charging history aren't in chronological order so if there are any payment issues, finding the invoice/history is just confusing. Alongside this I've found the invoices and the actual payments that come out from my bank don't always add up and this is because they often merge payments together but don't make one giant invoice for it but actually individual ones. It's just a shambles. I much prefer BP and Shell Recharge

Discusting service - take your money for NO ACTUAL CHARGE

Yet again. Another charge station that doesn’t work; however they are more than happy to take 3 x £49! As you get charged to re-attempt to use the charging station. They now have nearly £150 of MY MONEY they they will hold for a week. Can I have any interest you’ve made please no matter how small. This is the third time now trying to use the system that fails. Makes a complete mockery of ULEZ, drive electric they ask, you do…. And yet again Source can’t charge your car. It’s disgusting service and a net work I won’t bother using.

Seems really simple and reliable. Used quite a few times now and moving onto resident card.

I think app could be designed for more intuitive navigation. Took a while to work out to ‘swipe up’ to find the right charger, but now I know it’s good.

Nothing but hassle

Nothing but hassle. As I live in a London Borough with an EV and no home charger this seemed the ideal solution with numerous charging points available. However, I have not been able to make a payment and on a near daily basis get notification that yet another payment to Source London has failed. Source London tell me it's my details that are incorrect. I have updated my details on the web-site twice now with the correct details and yet still they fail. I contacted Source London telling them to check their systems, they stated their systems are fine and that I need to check my bank. Have cancelled subscription. Absolute rubbish. Haven't even got as far as using their chargers. Someone needs to buy this company and sort it out as the potential is massive.
