The library sounds fantastic. Great for cinematic work with such huge sounds. A must buy for any cpomposer
Great big sounds, love the Hype / Scale concepts, they can really help with creative choices you otherwise wouldn't think of or spend that much time trying to achieve. Overall very impressed with the low end. Also pleased with the additional longs sections. I personally wish the horns were crisper and trumpets were included.
This library is absolutely a must have for people looking to produce great soundtracks. Everything, going from the slight pitch variations to the ability to increase the hype of an instrument while playing a crescendo and especially the fact that it is standalone so you don't need Kontakt make this product a must have in my opinion.

The company shifted to political activism and, no matter the quality of the instruments, they're not fun to play any more.
Unfortunately lo-fi, but not lo-fi enough to sound intentionally lo-fi. There's not much life here, it sounds synthetic rather than orchestral even with the hype all the way down. And when the hype is up it's not punchy enough as all the samples have soft transients. The lack of vibrato control doesn't help. Many of the sliders sound more like effects than blends between different sample sets. If you're after punchy orchestral sounds Abbey Road 1 does it better and sounds much more natural and hi-fi. If you're after a chamber orchestra sound then Chamber Strings is leagues better, both far more playable with a wider range of tones and much more musical, deep and sweeter sounding (but hampered by being on Kontakt). There's a strange aliasing like sound on everything that you can try to notch out around 450hz. There's no top end. The synth sounds are ok, but nothing that you can't achieve with any VI. The hype control seems to be just distortion and bass synthesis applied to everything, it works ok on bass instruments but on high strings piccolos etc it just adds this weird bass synth that I'm struggling to find a use for other than muddying things, you'd expect hype to bring out the sweeter sharper elements of high instruments. It also seems to cause a radical change between transient volume and tails on the horns patches to the point they become unplayable. The near/far mic's seems to be an effect applied maybe a convolution verb rather than mix between samples, it's not bad, but sometimes feels too subtle to be of much worth. You'd expect proximity effects to be more pronounced close by. It's possible that it is sample based and just blending between two points. Overall it sounds more like it's' designed as an orchestral synthesis library for those who don't know how to do this with existing samples they might have. Given that it sounds all like a synth and rather simple and dead I wish they'd gone full on hybrid instrument with it to reduce the file size and increase the playability. A rare miss for Spitfire.

I appreciate the new technology with Alb. Colossus, The sound is grand, but has a lot of room for manipulation and change. Very versatile.
love the sounds, very intuitive uses. Mostly to access sound palettes, not many articulations. Restrains the potential of things that can be played with this library to the obvious choices. Nearseighted.
This is an interesting library. The marketing blurb mostly speaks of its capacity “to go to 11” and a certain “epic” aesthetic. I only partially agree with this characterization. However, this library does inhabit a rather unique sonic world, one that for lack of a better word I’d describe as “anti-lyrical”. People have called it synthetic sounding and in a way it maybe does - but in a very good fashion. If you’re into that kind of thing. I’ve heard the orchestral parts of this toolkit described as “hyperorchestral”, and to me that’s where the true power and added value of this library lies. This pairs REALLY well with synths and electronic music for instance. The percussion in here and the synth sounds by mister Joseph Holiday (Snakes of Russia) are very very good and instantly useful for any modern score. I have and use two other Albions (NEO and Solstice) and this new edition has me intrigued as it is a far more alien affair to me compared to those two. It sounds clean to the point of almost “distant” sounding. I love this library and am curious to find out where it leads me and my music; it’s THAT type of musical instrument to me. It does inhabit a niche where I expect it may take a while for composers to find where its true powers lie.

This is another of the remarkable products sold by Spitfire. I have many of them, not even mentioning the free labs that for some reason they just GIVE away. The products are simply pristine and, the best way I can describe them, THICK! By this I mean lush, full, and as faithful as software can be to original instrumentation. Put a Spitfire string section up against ANY other and tell me there's no difference. You can't. Let me move to the use of the product. Ever have trouble downloading and installing? Take, for example, Sample Logic. Have you ever been able to successfully install any of their things? I have not. With Spitfire, it pretty much just does it like your own robot. Get your product, tell the computer where to install (you will absolutely need external drives), and punch a button. That's it. By themselves, the products are great. Get a midi controller like all their video guys (Christian, etc.) have and you are a CONDUCTOR! With Colossus, you can also finally get a little "rock and rolly", something that's been missing so far in my opinion. I've only had a cursory inspection of the download, but love what I've heard. It's what I had hoped Sample Logic Symphonic AI would be if I could have ever gotten it on my computer, or gotten them to help me. Spitfire responds to all questions almost immediately, are courteous and professional, and always ready to help. If you watch their tutorials, you begin to wish you were personal friends of their reps. Yes, Spitfire is expensive, but like anything else in this world, you get what you pay for. If you can't get the sound and music you want from Spitfire, you just aren't going to get it. It's as simple as that.
It's got all kinds of creative sounds in it. I'm more of a video game soundtrack composer than a movie one, but Albion Colossus is very appropriate for any moment-to-moment action I might have to score. I enjoy mixing odd pieces of Albion Colossus with other synths and VSTs to create glitchy, catchy, oddball sounds. 10/10, would recommend. And Spitfire, if you're reading this, you should consider making a library of glitched sounds. thank you for your time, have a nice day! :)
I am very happy to have this library, it was one of my dreams and spitfire audio has made it come true.
I'm not going to give this product a full score. It sounds awsome and the new Hype feature is excellent. So soundwise, it's a 10/10 but, it is missing the Stephensons steamband. ( :-( ) which always has been part of the Albion libaries. (maybe I'm spoiled) I'm not a big fan of the SA player. It is technically good but, not very intuitive. I suggest you have a good look at VSL's Synchron player. That is, in my mind the best Library player on the market, next to Kontakt of course. You have a single application where you can see all the libraries, can select patches from multiple libaries and combine them in layers/splits, create your own articulations by combining patches, ... You have tons of controls that can be used on all the libraries, regardless of them being free or purchased, a mixer with EQ's and builtin fx plugins that you can apply as you like. It would be great to have a proper ADSR or at least AR envelope generator. I know this may go against the principles of a serious Orchestral library but several developers (EastWest, VSL,..) do provide this. An AR (or ADSR) would allow the user to create swelling/fading pads, obviously not for a mockup that is expected to be converted into sheet music for an orchestra but, it would make the libraries more useful got other music genres. Providing the user with as many controls as possible, will make the libraries more flexible. Enough nagging... A great sounding library... well done !!
I've had a few Colossuses over the years (Samplecell, Structure) and this one is awesome. I love seeing companies in their creation doing innovative miracles before the corporate machine destroys them and they start getting funky with their customers, burn out and never to be trusted again. Fingers crossed the Americans will keep away from this company. Well done. A glorious product that is better than what I imagined it to be.
