I received an check from HMRC and I did not know why. Today I received an email from a company called Taxtree requesting a payment from me for their work in getting me a refund. I have not requested their services. How did they get my personal details, they know exactly the amount of the cheque I received and I have 28 days to pay them. What should I do? Thanks

I had no idea whatsoever that my money had been sent to this company Tax Tree, it was only after 60 days had passed and I still hadn't received my cheque from HMRC. They informed me a cheque had been sent to TaxTree 2 months ago.
Why hasn't this company been in touch, why have I to chase my own hard working money. You would think if I signed up to this company they would have my details stored and would have had the common courtesy to get in touch with me, and inform me on how to claim this back. Is this company a scam? Do I need to report them? If so, who do I contact? I have emailed them this morning and got a reply - please allow 3-5 days, sure aye....... I've waited 60 days what's another 5.
Now that you’ve replied to me via email and I’ve responded straight away. Do I have to wait a further 3-5 days for another response?
1/11/23 - 2 weeks later I received my cheque.
I needed an explanation. So I got an email from tax tree saying back in oct 22 I signed asking for their help to claim back ppi from HMRC BUT that I omitted to give them my national insurance number. So tell me, how can they obtain this if I didn’t give it to them?
The breakdown of the refund is as shown below
Refund £389.11
Fee @37.5% exc. VAT@20% £145.92
Fee @37.5% Inc. VAT@20% £175.10
Cheque to you £214.01

I did not authorise Tax Tree to claim any tax rebate on my behalf but received a letter from HMRC confirming they'd sent a cheque to them in respect of £146.50.
I am totally in shock that NHRC can can do this. I have written to Tax Tree asking them to forward the cheque to me but nothing so far. Absolutely disgusting!

Same problem for me. Hmrc sent payment to them on 21st Aug this year and after multiple emails to the 'help@' email address still nothing from them. Absolutely horrendous and I hadn't even contacted these people

I received a letter on the 4th September saying I was due a tax rebate and the monies would be sent to tax tree any phone calls are just ajoax reruted back to the beginning obviously a total scam probably just one person in a shed in a back garden they should be investigated

I've just been reading the reviews and my situation is the same. Received a HMRC letter saying I was due a refund and the money being sent to Tax Tree. Who are they, I never authorised this!! Tried to call but can't get to speak to a person, just lots of options to press. How can HMRC let this happen, it's a scam. My actual review score is 0 because this company is fraudulently operating under another company name to get people to send details so they can claim ppi tax back. I will be taking legal advice over this. So people beware of this company and do your checks beforehand
Update 20/10/23 - after a reply from Tax Tree asking to send an email, which I've done, I'm still waiting for a reply. They say a response would be issued in 3-5 but doesn't state if it's days or weeks and at this rate I'm guessing it will be years

After i placed nany such reviews and track a way to draw attention using X, i have been contacted and mysteriously my payment is found and dealt with! Never give up and keep pestering. have just not had any luck from this appalling company, if I could give no star's I would, they said get in contact with help desk, I did and got no response at all, they are a shocking company, I have now put in a fraudulent claim with HMRC. REAL RATING 0 STARS

Appalling service, A, never signed upto this B, wouldn’t know who they are got tax rebate they took £300, before I received the cheque, now got updates on HMRC APP stating I underpaid tax in the long run they basically want the money they hand out with one hand back, getting in contact with this company is like speaking to the devil! Avoid at all costs I’ll be taking this matter further as now your costing me money, corrupt is a understatement. I pay my taxes thank you very much!

Received a tax refund from tax tree today via HMRC and they took 45% commission 😡
DO NOT use these people, not only do they make you wait forever for your cheque they charge 40% for the priveledge of doing so.No where is this percentage rate mentioned.Rip off merchants.

Tax Tree hang your head in shame due to the fact that you as a so called "HMRC" company are blatantly stealing peoples money from them. Under the current climate you would like to think that you help people by refunding their tax rebate to them and not putting it into your own pocket. I have forwarded all my information to ACTION FRUAD,FCA, HMRC and the Police. I urge every person who has had dealings with these cowboys to report them as well. companies like these must be reported. they are committing fraudulent activity at peoples expense.

I don’t know who this group are. I received a letter from hmrc saying I was owed a tax rebate for 2020/21 and they’d sent a cheque to Tax Tree for just over £200. Two months later I received a cheque from Tax Tree for just over £100, with no explanation. When I tried ringing them, there is no one to answer calls. Strikes me,whoever theyare, they are a scam. Avoid like the plague - if you can work outwhotheyare. If hmrc have sub contracted rebates to them, weare all doomed.
Can you give no stars? I received a letter from HMRC to say I have overpaid tax and a cheque for £35 had been sent to Tax Tree who would send one to me. 3 months later no cheque so I contacted them. They have my cheque but I won’t be getting anything because their charges are £50. They said they will kindly not charge me the extra £15. What an absolute scam, why can’t HMRC send a cheque directly? Something isn’t right about this system surely!!

I had a letter from HMRC on 17th July to say a tax refund of £798 has been sent to tax tree. I contacted them and the did reply and said. Please send a copy of the letter which I did. I have recently got hold HMRC and they said a cheque was sent to tax tree on 18th July. I’ve emailed tax tree lately explaining this and no reply!!! They have had my money for nearly 2 months what takes so long to just send a cheque ?? Very annoyed!

I have received a letter from HMRC to say that my tax refund was sent to this company on July 20th. I have never knowingly used them and I certainly didn't sign anything or give my details to anyone. I am appalled that this could happen and the one star above is only there to allow me to write this.

I was informed of a tax refund in May this year. I chased with HMRC who informed me rebate cheque was issued on 16 May and sent to Tax Tree, emailed them on 29 Aug and only received a cheque from them today (02 Sep). The cheque received was 55% of the expected refund. What has happened to the 55% they have retained - I did ask why but my ticket was closed and no response to request for an ex gratis payment. Will not use again.

I am so sorry to have used this company. Countless emails and even a letter to the CEO but no answer.I was told I was due a rebate at the begin July and still not received it. Next course of action is the fraud department at HMRC…. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY…. And before u respond back use the help email address I have twice. How about you send me the money that is owed to me

I had a positive experience with Tax Tree, took awhile, nearly 12 month but this due was apparently due to HMRC, all sorted now.

I saw these other reviews and I was worried but I got in touch with them and they talked me through how I signed up and now I’m reassured, they sent me payment about 3 weeks later

Service was quick, fee was a bit of a shock but that’s due to me not reading the terms to be honest. Either way I got a nice refund
