Fantastic buying experience.

What a lovely company to buy from. Needed a new climbing rope and Hatt Equipment had just the one I wanted at an excellent price. Web site was so easy to use and I was kept informed about the order which arrived in super fast time. Many thanks to Joe for such a nice buying experience. Joe was a tremendous help in finding my daughter her climbing shoes. He was very patient and informative, assisting her in selecting the right pair. We spent over an hour and a half trying on more than 15 pairs of shoes, and he remained kind and supportive until my daughter was happy with her choice. I'm really glad we discovered this shop that offers everything for rock climbers and so much more.

Pray you don't get injured on their activities

I booked a paddleboarding experience for my wife's birthday.

Unfortunately she experienced a serious grade 3 hamstring tear when engaging in an instructor-initiated activity on the water half-way through the activity. The way the activity was performed was not safe, and when raising concerns about this Hatt's response has been "other people didn't get injured", and "the instructor is highly qualified", neither of which are relevant to my wife's major injury.

Despite the severity of the injury, the aftercare was non-existent. She wasn't taken straight to shore, the staff did not help her out of the water, and she had to then struggle her way back to the shop, where she was left standing in pain at without their care or assistance whilst I fetched our car to take her home.

After the experience we tried to discuss the incident with them amicably, but they have been overly defensive and utterly contemptuous to us.

They have repeatedly belittled the injury as a "pulled muscle" - despite us informing them of the severity of the injury (as confirmed by a NHS nurse, GP and private physiotherapist).

My wife has been unable to sit, lie down or stand comfortably for a month now, let alone walk anywhere. Her recovery is going to take months, and we have already spent hundreds of pounds on physio fees.

Hatt have literally added insult to injury with their response.

I have honestly never felt so let down by a company in my life.

Update: I am not surprised to see the company's continued confrontational and deflective tone in its reply below.

Thanks for your review. We anticipated hearing from you after our email exchange regarding your wife’s injury.

Safety is our top priority, and in 20 years of running adventurous activities, we’ve encountered relatively few injuries—something common across outdoor adventure companies. Over this period, incidents have included a broken collarbone (mountain biking) and a dislocated finger (walking the UK 3 Peaks Challenge), alongside minor scrapes and bruises. Given the extreme environments of some courses (e.g. Scottish winter mountaineering, white-water kayaking, sea cliff climbing), we hope you’d agree our safety record is very strong.

We find your concerns and repeated emails unsubstantiated for these reasons:

1. Session Safety Measures: During the session, we exceeded standard safety practices. The Instructor to Participant ratio was 1:3, with two highly qualified instructors for six participants, compared to the normal ratio of 1:8 on water. This made for an exceptionally controlled environment.

2. Venue Suitability: We actively assess venue suitability to prioritize safety. Instead of using the sea, which was too rough for beginners that day, we switched to the “Very Sheltered Water” of the Marina. As defined by Paddle UK, “Very Sheltered Water” includes quiet canals and small lakes, characterised by easy access and no conditions likely to cause issues.

3. Instructor Responsibility: Your claim that the instructor didn’t care for your wife is misleading. Your wife did not request to leave or indicate severe pain. Even experienced instructors rely on participants to communicate their discomfort. Despite her discomfort, she chose to continue the session, opting out of only the standing activities. The instructors carried her paddleboard and equipment back to the changing facilities which were only a 200m walk away and advised her on muscle strain management, which was the best assessment they could make.

4. Inherent Risk in Adventure Activities: No company can guarantee complete safety, as all adventurous activities involve risk. During the session, participants were encouraged to switch between Sit-on-Top Kayaks and Stand-Up Paddleboards, with proper instruction and skills progression. Games, a standard part of such activities to enhance learning, were played. Unfortunately, during one of these games (jumping between paddleboards), your wife fell and strained a muscle. The session’s structure was in line with national standards and typical of any SUP experience.

Regardless of your comments, we are genuinely disappointed that your wife was picked up a muscle strain on a session, but we maintain that these unfortunate events do happen when taking part in adventurous activities. Risk is inherent in all outdoor activity. However, for many, it’s the sense of risk that makes these activities fun and is why we aim to run these activities in the safest and most controlled environments we can.

Great service.

I went to have a look for some climbing shoes at Hatt and found they were very helpful and had a good knowledge of the products.
The staff were approachable and friendly and were happy to let me try a few different pairs of shoes, and use their climbing test wall which really made a difference in choosing.
I will definitely recommend them.
