Trama Textiles is an autonomous textile cooperative and school run by Indigenous Maya women in the highlands of Guatemala. Our cooperative of over 100 Maya weavers was founded in 1988 in resistance to the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996). The war was a recent civil and economic crisis that devastated the Indigenous communities of Guatemala and forced many people into a debilitating cycle of neocolonial poverty. In an effort to break this cycle, Trama Textiles provides fair wages in sustainable revenue streams to Maya artisans for their art. Our unique art and approach utilizes traditional practices and ancestral knowledge to make products that meet contemporary needs.

It’s beautiful
It’s beautiful. I love it! I keep getting compliments with people liking the design. It became my favorite garment. I wear it everywhere now especially since it suits all climate. It’s super hot out but it’s airy and protects my skin from the sun.

I think the outreach is well-planned and effective.
It is my opinion that the handmade caveat has been used as an excuse for a few shoddy work practices. I am a craftsperson and know that beautiful work takes time and finishing can be the most time consuming. I was not so much seeking a deal as much as being supportive of your cooperative. If the sum I paid was not sufficient for good hand finishing I may have paid more. I am talking a few stray ends and knots that needed attention. It only took about an hour and a half or so to accomplish.
I love the colors and they add a nice atmosphere to my living room. The texture is lovely and I am happy with my purchase.
