Declining Standards, Poor Management, and Frustrating Member Experience – Village Gym Needs Serious Improvement!

I have been a member of Village Gym (Dudley, Castlegate, West Midlands) for several years, and unfortunately, the standards have dropped significantly. When paying £50+ per month, members expect well-maintained facilities, timely repairs, and a level of customer service that reflects the premium pricing—yet this is far from reality.

Since the start of 2025, the pool, sauna, steam room, and whirlpool have been frequently closed, often without any notice or explanation. When they are open, they are not always cleaned to a high standard, which raises hygiene concerns. The showers regularly run out of soap, and the swimming clothes dryer are frequently out of order, making what should be a premium experience feel subpar.

The situation with the gym equipment is even more frustrating. On Monday—one of the busiest days of the week—four key machines were out of order, and this isn’t a one-off issue. Some of these machines have been broken for over a month, yet no action has been taken. Given that Village Gym already has a limited selection of weight machines, having multiple out of service creates long queues and a frustrating experience for members who are trying to get a proper workout. This level of neglect is completely unacceptable for a high-end gym.

Perhaps the biggest issue is the attitude of management. Despite repeated complaints to both hotel and gym management, no one seems interested in addressing these issues. The staff provide the same dismissive response: “We’ve reported it.” Reporting the problem is not enough—resolving it is what matters. Management shows zero urgency or accountability, and it is clear that customer satisfaction is not a priority. The lack of transparency and communication about when repairs will be made, or even acknowledging member concerns with genuine care, demonstrates extremely poor customer service.

Looking at previous reviews, it is clear this is an ongoing issue. Village Gym management appears to ignore complaints, failing to take even the most basic steps to improve facilities or member experience. With PureGym and The Gym Group just minutes away, offering better-maintained equipment at a lower price, it’s easy to see why many members are now looking elsewhere.

Until significant improvements are made—both in facility maintenance and customer service—I cannot recommend Village Gym to anyone seeking a reliable, high-quality fitness experience. Serious investment in repairs, staff training, and customer service is needed before this gym can justify its premium pricing.

VG Portsmouth. Pool water is far too cold…

The swimming pool water is far too cold to able to exercise comfortably if you have arthritis, like I do. Several others also moaned. Entering the pool is like going into the sea in spring, after only 5 mins my joints became too sore and I had to get in the hot tub for 10mins to ease them. l’ve complained countless times, it improves for a few weeks then it’s back to being cold again.
The Aquafit tutor just made a joke of it all saying it was boiling.

(BAD) Leisure clubManager ASHTON

I’m actually sad and angry at the fact that another five or six long-standing staff members Have left or are leaving the Village Ashton Moss due to the bullying and Horrible attitude from their leisure club manager her name is paz…….

Was a wonderful place and the staff were great and helpful especially Dan [ I do wish you and the rest of the staff a happy life and sorry to see you leave because of her….

It breaks my heart, knowing that some of the staff go home in tears.

I must say, bullying is unacceptable at any workplace at any age and from what I’ve heard that she is known for this and the company is still allowing this to happen!!!! At this rate, the gym is going to have no staff left, it’s like a déjà vu from all the other gyms she has worked at…… just keeps happening

Bournemouth is over crowded and dirty

Bournemouth is over crowded and dirty. Contract terms are unfair as documented in other reviews. Payment terms are dictatorial. If zero stars was an option I'd give it. Either pay to join a genuinely exclusive gym or go budget. The Village is the perfect example of a company run for the benefit of management and shareholder bonuses. Customers are considered a burden and treated like cattle. AVOID!

Bristol village gym

Bristol village gym, regret signing up to this gym. The staff are rude and ignorant. Very childish behaviour, over priced and the atmosphere is horrendous! Complaints to the manager get you nowhere, your just treated even worse! Other gym users have spoken to me about not being happy with the service at this gym aswell.

Bournemouth: Terrible Gym, Bad parking

Finding a parking space is ridiculous. The premises seem quite content with letting anyone and everyone who wants to visit the hospital park there fot free rather than pay for parking at the hospital itself. This could be policed better.
The gym at Bournemouth is smaller than others on The Village circuit and in a much worse state of repair. The machines at Bournemouth are definitely more outdated than other gyms, but I'm still paying the same as other Village Gym members! How is that right? If you compared the Portsmouth North Harbour gym versus the Bournemouth one, you would think that they are run by completely different companies. Worlds apart.
I have cancelled my membership and the customer service team (via email, so not necessarily the staff at Bournemouth) were very unhelpful and, to be honest, at times condescending and rude.
I would never use a Village Gym again. And I would not recommend them to anyone.

Dirty and unsafe

Swansea review. Clue should be in the Name- Village Gym Health and Wellness. Been a customer for 5 years and have constantly had to mention hygiene and cleaning to them. From disabled showers having a dragging door for 5 years, limescale along the poolside, limescale in the showers, drainage in changing rooms blocked and smelling, Jacuzzi closed for weeks at a time, ceiling collapse in the steam room, classes gone from 70/30 instructor to 80/20 virtual and finally a staff member tipping the contents of the mop bucket into the pool !!
They expect a 3 month notice period too, thankfully I left with no notice required. Must have been the mention of Environmental health that did it.
If you value your Health and Wellbeing go elsewhere.

Awful value, unethical business

Price is way too high for what you get for starters, I was paying £80+ pm for a fairly basic gym setup with a noisy and heavily chlorinated indoor pool with kids there most of the time. Nothing is particularly fancy to justify the price there whatsoever.

In addition, I had a 3 month minimum contract and despite losing my job and house in the first month and there being a clause in the contract that allows you to exit early in such circumstances if you provide evidence (which I did) - they are still charging me for 2 months of gym fees that I never used.

Highly unethical business, even ignoring that the value is awful and you're better off going to PureGym or something like that for a quarter of the price, the equipment is of similar quality. Will be making sure to boycott this gym in my social circles as well.

I joined blackpool village gym last…

I joined blackpool village gym last year in the summer months . Last year i needed to freeze my membership for a couple of months after being ill and unable to use.
The staff were very helpful, there was no waiting around and when i was ready to resume my membership, it was all dealt with seamlessly.
I have been happy with the facilities on offer at this gym. The gym equipment is great, the pools are fantastic and i find the choice offered in classes are the best around.
