Yella Wood porch board…DO NOT BUY

We bought their Yella Wood porch board and received boards that were not milled properly. The tounge and groove is at all different depths causing boards that are higher and lower all over our porch. We originally were personally called by Vintage Woodworks and told that they "wanted to call and personally apologize for the state of the lumber that arrived" but when I spoke to the gal (after she spoke to the owner), we were told that there was "nothing that could be done due to our alteration of the product" even though their website specifically says that we needed to prime the product before installation.

It was also stated that we were supposed to check the product for "proper sizing". We did- we checked that the length was correct. Apparently the customer is also in the role of quality control. They need to state that explicitly on their website. Quality control should not be my job as the customer. It should have been checked before it even left the milling company. The discrepancies in thickness/proper alignment of the tongue and groove is not something that I am equipped as a customer to look for or be knowledgeable about. Were we expected to rough lay the porch in order to check this before installing? And how could you rough lay the product, when the product needs cut in order to fit in the confines of the brick surround of our porch?

I am very unhappy and downright mad that we received a product that was not quality. I thought I was choosing a quality supplier, but they don't stand behind their own quality control... that is unacceptable. No one should be buying this product from them.

Surprise Shipping Charges...

ordered a total of 12 feet of a four inch wide moulding for a home repair on a historic home. Couldnt find a matching moulding in home store (Lowes/Home Depot). Totaled out to around 50 dollars at checkout including shipping. About 2 hours later, after checking out, received a call from a Texas number. The individual left a message that my order was not going to ship unless i authorized a substantial increase in the shipping amount. These BS fees ended up more than tripling the amount of my order. I truly believe that this is a scam to burn people for their money. How can it be, with technology being what it is today, that you, as a business, cannot estimate to the penny exactly what the shipping costs will be for any item. I have to call BS on this one and will NEVER EVER purchase anything from this company, ever again.

You are right that technology has advanced so that exact shipping calculation is now possible online, even for complex situations like ours. You are VERY wrong that it's a scam! We are a family business that has been doing this for 47 years. As a small business, we don't yet have the latest technology on our site, but we're working to fix that... We are actually in the process of building a new website that will include precise shipping, but there are many more complexities to shipping our products than most... The combination of very long, very heavy, &/or over-dimension packages must be combined to get a total volume of everything you've ordered & then determine which carrier will take those dimensions, etc etc. It's not just about that one item on most ordered, but rather the combined metrics. Possible, but not easy. We believe we have the next best possible system in place for now... We warn of possible additional shipping charges all over our site, very boldly, and even making you acknowledge them on certain pages by selecting the acknowledgement from a dropdown. Then, we have a real live person call to discuss this with you before we would ever charge your credit card. It's not perfect, but it's VERY far from a scam. The orders that get the most shocking news are actually the very small orders that are long or oversize. Mouldings are a great example of that. That's the cost of getting exactly what you need from a nationwide-shipping manufacturer instead of a local store that doesn't carry it! We resist the need for order minimums so that we can help the customer that just needs a few pieces, but that often results in shipping prices that are more than the item itself. We only pass on the exact charges from the shipping companies. We make ZERO money on shipping. If you want to provide your previous order number & full name, we can show you the exact quote from the shipping company to your location.

Ordered a column wrap on 5/29/24

Ordered a column wrap on 5/29/24. Called them to check on order on 07/12/24 as it was supposed to be shipped in 2-4 weeks per their ship schedule. When I called, they said they cancelled the order. They said they called on 07/02/24 to let me know shipping charges would be more but I supposedly did not answer so they cancelled the order. They never left a voice mail or did not send me an email to let me know. Very shoddy process. Waste of about six weeks of time. I worked in IT for over 40 years and know how to manage my emails and voice mails. I review both emails and voicemails every day. Always check spam and junk folders and have never had my voicemail filled to capacity so that voicemails could not be left. I appreciate the offer to call you on your stock availability but have already purchased the column wrap from another company.

We are so sorry you weren't getting our calls & emails. We called the number ending in -8197 as typed on your online order & emailed to the address used on your order, each of these days: 5/30, 5/31, 6/10, 6/19.
The notes from our customer service rep say that she was unable to leave voicemail at this number. Perhaps the mailbox wasn't set up or was full. Perhaps you entered the wrong phone number on your order, but I don't want to confirm that publicly here. Perhaps our emails were going to your Spam/Junk folder?

We understand now that you weren't getting them, but we tried to reach you that whole time! We were calling for your approval for extra shipping charges after our ship review was done. As we state on our website, often smaller orders for large/long items can require more shipping charges once we know your address & can review the true shipping costs. We only charge what the shipping company charges us. We make no money on shipping.

After over a month of trying to reach you & not getting a response, we canceled the order.

We have these in stock for immediate shipping, and we tried to get you to proceed with the order again when you called & we explained the situation, but you were mad & hung up. If you can see how hard we tried to reach you & understand that this was out of our control, we would be happy to help you if you will call us back at 903-356-2158. When you call, please confirm we have the right number & email for you.

Be Aware of Substantial Added Shipping Fees

The materials were fine, but as mentioned frequently in other posts, the shipping is a killer. True, they do warn the user that extra shipping may be charged, but this hits after already charging a substantial shipping fee online. Then a few days later you get a call with an absolutely whopping additional fee, which you have to accept or abandon your project. I bought $1,390 worth of material and then additionally paid: $36 for "special packaging", $143 for "Shipping", $17.50 for "46 inch and longer fee", and finally, $293 for "Extra Shipping", a total of $489.50 beyond the product price, or 35% of the product cost! Then I found out I had to buy one more porch post, and that shipping fee more than DOUBLED that price. I don't want to cast aspersions, but BE AWARE, your total cost will be SUBSTANTIALLY higher than the website price for the materials.

Phil, We don't like the high cost of shipping either. The tough thing about our products is that many of them ship without any additional shipping costs. Others, as you experienced, are quite costly to ship & that amount depends on a number of factors, including your location. But, it gets even trickier to predict if you order some small items with some large/long items, etc. We are currently working on a new website/platform that should be able to present these charges up front. At present, we're doing the best we can, & we only charge fees for the EXACT amount the shipper is charging us. We do NOT make money on these shipping fees. And, we absolutely never charge your card without you approving these extra charges.

We're certainly sorry your shipping cost was so high, but we let you know that may be the case, then we let you know the exact amount, & you accepted to proceed. So, we sure hope you'll consider raising this rating since we did deliver on what we said we would do. Thank you for trusting us enough to give it a try, even though it was high shipping! We sure hope you're loving the products.

I was thereafter called by VW and asked (extorted?) for "additional shipping fees" allegedly charged by VW's shipper to VW. I have no way of knowing whether this is actually true. VW needs to be more transparent, and calculate and PUBLISH the shipping fees with CERTAINTY at the time of purchase. It's not enough to publish a disclaimer about how shipping fees might need to be readjusted after an order is placed. Customers need to know what the
'all-in' amount is at the time of purchase. We spend a lot of time comparison shopping, and shipping is taken into consideration. If you can't rely on a shipping price, then you are always subject to a bait-and-switch.

We do post this information (that additional shipping may be required) all over our website, but we also understand that's not as good as we should do! Our current website platform cannot accommodate our wide variety of product sizes & shipping possibilities, so we are actively working on a new site right now. We hear you!!
But, please also know that we're not trying to trick you & therefore, we never actually run your credit card until we call w/ the total amount if it has changed. We do see your point that you've put much effort into the order before that point & that's valid. Our current system is not ideal, but it is in no way an attempt to be dishonest. Quite the opposite, we don't want to risk overcharging certain order types/locations just to be covered on the more expensive ones.
We attempted to locate your order to better address this, but we couldn't find an order under your name. If you want to email us at mail@vintagewoodworks.com w/ any further questions or if you'd like to tell us the name it was placed under, we can address it more specifically.

undelivered merchandise poor service

Waiting on Azek decking I was told they could get and was to ship out on 5-25-21, never sent. Then it was 6-2-21 and that came and went. Still waiting and they don know if they can get it now even though its still on website. Credit card charged on 4-29-21. Was told I could not speak to a supervisor. Poor customer service, dont always call back and no emails . Dont recommend as I have seen other bad reviews . Was told multiple times in April 2021 that the owner was personally going to call the vendors. I spoke to multiple people there and was told it was coming. I spoke to someone there today who actually did call back. Either you can get it or cant. was willing to pay the 35 percent upcharge.

Tom, we are so sorry this Azek item has caused this trouble. We dislike this as much as you do! As you have acknowledged, this particular color of Azek Decking has been discontinued. We have worked hard, even contacting distributors out of state, to try to secure this color for your order. Each time we had an update from our suppliers, we contacted you. We got misinformation from supplies who said it was on the truck to us, but then it never was. We have spoken to you &/or your wife each time we had new information. Our notes reflect that when you asked for a manager, we told you this latest info came directly from one of our owners, but if you were actually refused a conversation with a manager, that's not our procedure, and we're very sorry for that. We never meant to mislead you... this item was always still coming as we said, but getting our hands on it once discontinued proved quite challenging. We have a supplier's word that they've found some & it could be to you in 3-4 weeks, but we understand that's too late for you, & you've chosen instead to cancel. We are truly sorry this unfolded this way.

Great selection of beadboard

Great selection of beadboard. Various widths and many species of wood to choose from. Most every board was free of defects and milled to perfection. Also impressed with the packaging.

Thanks for the feedback. We are sorry that our order review process delayed your shopping process. As for the extra shipping charge, hopefully you noted when ordering the multiple places we mention online that additional shipping fees may be required. We really work hard to notify the customer ahead of time to expect this may affect their order. Below are the places we indicate this on the Porch Post page, where you acknowledged it during checkout, and why this manual review is necessary for a company like ours…

The "Important Shipping Info - Read Before Ordering" info linked in bold just above each Porch Post ordering section leads directly to a page that says, "Additional Shipping Charges: Some orders may require additional shipping charges (such as for oversized, overweight, etc) to cover the actual cost to ship your order. We can only determine this after manually reviewing your order. If additional shipping charges are going to be necessary we will, of course, contact you before finalizing your order."

Also, one of the online order entry dropdowns says, "Shipping Info – Please select the following". From that dropdown you selected, "I read about the extra fee at the Important Shipping Info link above." We contacted you as soon as we had your ordered reviewed and determined the exact amount the shipper would charge us to ship your order.

Regardless, you may be wondering why, since we ship thousands of Posts all over the country, we don't know at the time you place your order what the total shipping charge will be. The answer: there are too many variables (item, quantity ordered, shipping destination, etc) to know that amount ahead of time. We have such a large selection of very different items (plus offering custom lengths in many items) that it’s impossible to achieve a more accurate shipping estimate for some items without human review after the order is placed.

It is necessary for our Shipping Dept to calculate this after we receive your order, as we only charge the actual amount we will be charged by the shipping company to ship your order to you. In other words, we don't make any profit on the total shipping charges.

And of course, we do not consider any order that requires an extra charge to be finalized until the customer has ok'd the extra amount.

We apologize that this manual review can take more time than you or we would like! The bottom line is that we would greatly prefer not to have to contact our customers asking for additional shipping, but if we don't cover our actual cost to ship we would have to increase the price of our products, as there is simply not enough profit margin in our products to subsidize shipping costs and still stay in business. The best solution we can offer at this time is the system we have in place.
