My ALX Journey: From Zero Tech to Building Real Solutions
My name is Cwaita Nobongoza, I come from a hospitality background. Before joining ALX Africa, I had absolutely no background in tech. No coding experience. No understanding of software. Just an idea—and a problem I had seen in the industry I was working in.
I chose Software Engineering (Backend C17), not because it was easy, but because I believed that if I could learn how to build systems, I could turn my idea into something real.
The Foundation Phase was one of the toughest academic experiences I’ve ever faced. It demanded discipline, long hours, and deep focus. I was introduced to languages like C, C++, and Java—things that felt completely foreign to me at the time.
There were moments of frustration. Moments of doubt.
But one thing kept me going:
I reminded myself why I started.
I stopped seeing it as “studying” and started seeing it as an investment in myself.
I pushed through—and I passed.
Moving into backend development, the challenge continued. More coding, more complexity, more growth. That’s where I truly learned a powerful lesson:
Nothing valuable comes easy. Every goal has a price—and the price is consistency.
But I didn’t stop there.
I continued to grow beyond software engineering:
I joined the AI Starter Kit to understand the future of technology
I enrolled in Founder Academy to learn how to turn ideas into businesses
I completed Freelancer Academy to gain real-world project experience
And recently, I completed the Data Analytics (C11) program, where I learned how to work with data, tools, and insights that drive real business decisions.
Today, I’m applying everything I’ve learned.
I’m currently building a booking system app for B&Bs—a solution inspired by real challenges I’ve experienced in the hospitality space. It’s still in progress, but it represents something much bigger:
Proof that you can start with nothing and build something meaningful.
If you’re considering ALX, here’s my honest advice:
It’s not easy
It will challenge you mentally and emotionally
You will doubt yourself at times
But if you stay consistent and remember your “why”…
It can change your life
This journey didn’t just teach me tech skills.
It taught me resilience, discipline, and how to solve real-world problems.
And that’s more valuable than anything.
Practical Skills, Real Impact: My Experience with ALX Africa
I completed the Virtual Assistant and Data Analytics training programs at ALX Africa, and overall, it was a valuable and career-shaping experience.
The Virtual Assistant program helped me build structured, job-ready skills like calendar management, communication, task prioritization, and client handling. It was very practical and aligned with real-world remote work expectations, which made it easy to see how the skills apply directly to freelance platforms and professional roles.
The Data Analytics training was more technical and required consistency, but it introduced me to essential tools and concepts such as data cleaning, analysis, and interpretation. It strengthened my ability to think critically and make data-driven decisions—skills that are highly relevant across industries.
One thing I appreciated was the emphasis on self-discipline and independent learning. The programs are not “easy”—you have to stay committed and manage your time well—but that’s also what makes them effective. The structure pushes you to grow both professionally and personally.
If there’s one challenge, it’s that the pace can feel intense, especially if you’re balancing work or other responsibilities. However, with proper time management, it’s manageable and worth it.
Overall, I would recommend ALX Africa to anyone looking to gain practical digital skills, especially in remote work and tech-related fields. It’s a solid starting point for building a career or expanding your skill set.
Its a learning experience
Its a learning experience. Its a journey of self discovery and celebration of every milestone. You have support access, catching up weekly, peer support to encourage you in the process of learning. Self paced so there is no unnecessary pressure.
There's no age limit anymore
I discovered ALX 2 weeks before turning 35 and I enrolled for the VA course, I graduated and had interest in DA course but was over the age limit, fast forward to 2025 and ALX gave me the opportunity to study further by removing their age limit, which truly was a wonderful for me. I was introduced to Outlier through the VA Almuni group which helped me earn in dollars. I also am now comfortable using LinkedIn to connect globally with clients aswell as professionals who offer me opportunities.-Kgantshe Bosiu
ALX is a great company
ALX is a great company; I chose it for my personal development. However, I experienced a challenge when I learned data analysis. I need in-person support, but I can't get somebody who can help me at the Lideta hub.
My experience
The content is well structured and understandable and when struggling one can ask peers for assistance.
My only issue its that everything is content heavy so it may be a bit challenging if u are working or are a full time student like me
Joining ALX Africa was one of the best…
Joining ALX Africa was one of the best decisions I've ever made. The academic content is world class; it really teaches you to DO HARD THINGS. Plus the community is supporting and purpose driven.
ALX and Intentionality.
My journey in ALX has been exceptional in the best way, but it was not always so. I am someone who had initially dropped out because I got in without intentionality and a purpose, I simply wanted to gain a skill. That mentality cost me wasted months, why? I showed up just for the sake of showing up, I did projects without really comprehending the why, I followed instructions blindly, the results? Projects I couldn't explain to myself let alone anyone else, I had to go back to the drawing board and find my purpose. A game changer. I dropped out and reapplied, this time with my reason why. And the program challenged me like it never did before. To think, to be creative, to lead with compassion, to build projects I am passionate about. I connected with peers and I fell in love with Data. I have grown in passion and in knowledge. Data Analytics is the bedrock on which I am building my forever, even as I proceed to Data Engineering. My advice? Join with a purpose and that will guide you. I love my journey, imperfect as it has been.
A review on ALX experience
First and foremost I gained a lot skills during my course period Alx gave an impact on analytical skills , I learnt to be punctual, that is time management is key ,doing the course work and assignments on time to avoid deadlines pressure.Atleast I improved my technical skills also .
One thing about alx is that they encourage team work which is helpful when you are stuck also it good in that your are able to speak out your ideas as a team and come up with something tangible at end of your projects.
Not forgetting to mention the fee payment which is affordable and favors everyone at large. Big shout out to ALX management team for the quick responses to emails and taking care of your students.
Team excellence
The team is out to deliver the best. From releasing the contents in bit _size plan to office hour for questions and guidance. My overall experience with Alx was second to none. Never felt an online course that feels more inclusive than this.
Write for a review concerning ALX
As an alumni of ALX, my experience has been both challenging and transformative. The program pushed me beyond my comfort zone, not just academically but also in terms of discipline, time management, and resilience. ALX emphasizes real world problem solving, collaboration, and self-driven learning skills that continue to shape how I approach work and opportunities today.
One of the most valuable aspects of ALX is its focus on practical, industry relevant skills. The hands-on projects and peer learning environment helped me build confidence and adaptability, which are essential in today’s fast changing professional world. It’s not an easy journey, but that’s what makes it worthwhile.
Being part of the ALX community also means joining a network of ambitious, driven individuals across Africa and beyond. The connections and mindset I gained are just as impactful as the technical knowledge.
Overall, ALX is not for those looking for shortcuts it’s for those ready to commit, grow, and take ownership of their future. I’m proud to be an alumni and grateful for the foundation it has given me.
If you want, I can make it shorter, more formal, or tailor it for LinkedIn or a website.
As an ALX alumni, my experience was challenging but truly transformative. The program strengthened my discipline, problem-solving skills, and ability to learn independently. Through hands on projects and collaboration, I gained practical, industry relevant experience.
ALX is demanding, but it prepares you for real world challenges and connects you to a strong network of driven individuals. I’m proud to be part of the community and grateful for the growth it inspired.
What made my experience great is the inclusive methods of training that was employed be alx.
What made my experience great is the way the lessons are structured and organised. Weekly assignments and quizzes, videos and notebooks that are well explained. And last but not the least, I was assigned a mentor or I rather say a career adviser that sees to my progress, can guide me to securing a job and beyond. Words alone can not explain how impactful I am.
I had the best experience with ALX…
I had the best experience with ALX truly I've acquired alot of skills and qualifications through them. From finance to tech so i truly from the bottom of my heart recommend it for anyone out there that wants to further their studies and acquire more skills and knowledge.
My point of view
I am happy with the experience at ALX so far. My expectations joining ALX was to just join and learn , nothing more. To my surprise, the structure of the leaning material was so innovative unlike the typical School structures. Also the communal environment makes studying more friendly and comprehensive. They hold your hands all through the course, fellow course mates are ready to help. For me ,it makes big difference,it prepares you to the modern corporate word.
I recommend ALX for absolute beginners
I joined Alx in 2024 knowing absolutely nothing about the remote workspace, never had any portfolio, i never believed i could actually work with foreign companies from the comfort of my home as a new mum, but within the space of 3 month during my Virtual Assistance training, I found myself in a community that held my hands and not only give me the information I needed to begin this career path.
But I got a solid support system and today my career has evolved, my portfolio is enriched and I'm now managing teams of Virtual Assistant as an Operations Manager, all this was possible because i started this career path with ALX and I forever remain grateful for the opportunity
I highly recommend alx for absolute beginners in their tech career path.
Exploring different career options and getting back to school
I experienced a shift in learning, meeting new people and exploring industry opportunities with technology. The step-by-step classes from foundations to data engineering currently on it has helped me navigate some projects. I have also added the Founders Academy course, which has been a great workaround with practical experience. This has helped me know which Projects and Solutions I can work on.
ALX Africa is one of the best things…
ALX Africa is one of the best things that i crossed paths in my humble 29 years back then i was 27 and was trying to learn to code most of what i try was doing exactly that teaching me how to code but ALX turned me to a problem solver and that a far more important skill that learning to code of course this last one is important but ALX show me the difference between a software engineer and a coder with that said i think everyone could benefit for the SE program even if they're not planning to get into the tech world because how that program could rewire your problem solving skills in your day to day life
From confusion to Clarity: My ALX Journey
At the time I was introduced to ALX, I was unsure about which program to take or even what direction to follow. I had different interests, especially in psychology, and I was very curious about it. I started looking deeper to see if ALX offered psychology related programs, but I later discovered that ALX mainly focuses on tech programs, which was different from what I expected. This made me feel a bit confused because I didn’t clearly know which path to choose or how to continue my journey.
However, when I was in S4, I also loved journalism. I had a dream of becoming a station owner one day. But since I didn’t want to study journalism as my main course at university, I started thinking of another way to stay close to that passion. So I thought, why not take content creation in ALX since it was something I already enjoyed doing. I was into editing videos, and even though I wasn’t that good at it, I was passionate about it. That is what pushed me to join ALX and become one of their proud students.
The journey at the beginning was not easy at all. It challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it also helped me grow step by step. As you may know, the first three months of each ALX program are the Professional Foundations. At first, I kept asking myself, “What is this? This is not what I signed up for.” I felt confused and even questioned if I had made the right decision.
But the more I went through the materials and my notes, the more I started to understand it. I realized it was not just about learning random skills. It was about becoming professional in what you do whether it is content creation, digital marketing, data analysis, or design. ALX was teaching us how to think, work, and present ourselves like professionals, not just beginners.
One of the hardest parts for me was not even the learning itself, but teamwork. We were required to work with peers, and I am a very shy person. It is not easy for me to approach new people. I used to go to the hub maybe once every week or two weeks, sit quietly, do my work, and leave. I didn’t know anyone, and I struggled with how to even find a peer.
At one point, I literally wrote “I need a peer” hoping someone would notice or help me. Luckily, I got a peer, and that changed everything. We came from different programs he was in data analysis and I was in content creation but we supported each other. We helped each other when we got stuck, and we even became friends. That experience taught me that collaboration really matters in everything we do.
Later, we had to separate when he moved fully into data analysis and I continued with content creation. That was another challenge because I suddenly had to continue on my own.
I started content creation at the same time I joined university, and it was very overwhelming. I had school assignments, ALX milestones, and projects all at once. It was not easy, especially because milestones required us to create real content like videos without a strict format, only guidelines. I often didn’t know where to start.
But I kept pushing. I reached out to alumni and the ALX community, and they were very helpful and supportive. Even as a shy person, I learned to step out of my comfort zone when necessary. I realized that when you know what you want, you have to go for it.
During my journey, I also learned an important lesson you will not always find supportive people. There are moments when people will discourage you. In some cases, people even told me that certain paths were useless or a waste of time. But I learned something important just because something didn’t work for someone else doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. I chose not to listen to discouragement and instead stayed focused and consistent. I believed in my journey and kept moving forward with confidence.
Today, I can say that joining ALX was one of the best decisions I made. What started as confusion slowly became growth, confidence, and opportunity. I am still learning and still shy at times, but I am no longer stuck. I now understand that growth happens when you challenge yourself, stay consistent, and believe in your own path no matter what others say.
