My mother-in-law died yesterday at St…

My mother-in-law died yesterday at St Peter’s Hospital, and I want to share our experience of her time on a geriatric ward.

Overall, we found the experience upsetting and, at times, lacking in clear communication and coordination. It also felt, to us, that compassion was not always as evident as it could have been. Kindness is cheap and effective.

We encountered basic administrative errors that were unsettling. For example, while the medical team did manage to obtain a DNR order, her name was at one point recorded incorrectly, and her next of kin was initially listed as her late husband.

In our experience, communication with the medical team was inconsistent. Important discussions about her condition and prognosis sometimes took place without family involvement because she was deemed to have capacity.

While we understand the legal basis for this, we found it difficult and distressing that these conversations happened without any relatives present, given her frailty and that they concerned the end of a loved one’s life.

We often felt we had to actively seek updates rather than being kept informed. On one visit, we were distressed to find that food, fluids, and some treatments had been withdrawn, which we had not fully understood in advance.

We also felt that she did not always receive timely help with basic needs like eating, drinking, or going to the toilet unless family members were there to assist or prompt staff. We recognise that staff are under pressure, but this was hard to witness.

We found conversations around end-of-life decisions, including resuscitation status and withdrawal of treatment, food and water, difficult to navigate. From our perspective, these discussions were not initially handled with the clarity or sensitivity we would have hoped for, although one longer meeting later on was more helpful.

There were also moments of visible tension between relatives of other patients and members of the medical team, which contributed to an already stressful environment.

At one stage, we were told that the ward manager was working from home, which we found surprising and added to a sense of disconnection.

I would encourage other families to stay closely involved, be present as much as possible, ask questions, and double-check important details if a loved one is admitted to a St Peter’s geriatric ward.

Was at St Peters 4/12/2025 and although we was there 7 hours , the A and E staff were fantastic . From 8.45 pm when we turned up to 4am when we left they never stopped . Our front line services need all the respect and credit for what they do . They even had to deal with a mental health patient throwing things around and disrupting everything, police called as well and still carried on . I for one feel NHS services are underfunded , staff underpaid and certainly don’t deserve the abuse they get from some people . Well done to all A/E staff on last night .

Care of the highest order

03/12/25 We were on our way from Newbury to the Kent coast when my wife was taken ill in the car. After going to the nearest hospital which did not have an A&E she was taken to St Peters.
I will not have a bad word said about the treatment she received. We were there nearly seven hours during which time she had x-rays, ultra sound, and a CT scan as well as the usual blood and urine tests, all carried out swiftly and luckily with a negative result in all cases, although it throw up an iron deficiency.
Too much detail? - well it needed listing because of the care given at a time when patients on trolleys were lining the corridors and the staff were visibly stretched, but the care given was exemplary.
I read some of the other reviews and it wasn't the hospital we attended.
Well done, professionalism at its highest.

St. Peters Chertsey - No stars should be given to this awful place. Disgraceful treatment of a young mum (my daughter) with a poorly toddler (aged 2) who had been blue lighted to hospital at 11.30 and was then turfed out at 3am by a dismissive dr. who offered no help or advice as to why the child fell so ill so suddenly. No transport home, hospital staff uncaringly said 'get an uber' then they were ignored! Impossible to find an uber with a child seat at that time so her other child had to be woken up so her partner could collect them.

Well Pleased

In August I was admitted to Dickens Ward at Ashford for a planned new hip. The staff , nurses and doctors, did an excellent job which has continued with at home orthopaedic support from hospital nurses. Thank you.

St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey

St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey

I am extremely disappointed with the standard of care and facilities at the Emergency Department of St Peter’s Hospital. The waiting area was overcrowded, with people forced to sit or lie on the floor due to lack of space. The environment was unhygienic and unpleasant, with a strong odor that made the experience even more distressing.

There is also a serious lack of privacy during triage. Doors were left open, and I witnessed patients being assessed in the public waiting area, with no consideration for confidentiality or dignity.

I visited with my young child who had a suspected broken arm. The staff insisted there was no fracture, despite her being in significant pain. Thankfully, I trusted my instincts and took her to Kingston Hospital later that same day. There, she was properly examined, diagnosed with a broken humerus, given a cast, referred to a fracture clinic, and offered physiotherapy. This level of misdiagnosis at St Peter’s is deeply concerning.

On a separate occasion, I went in with severe vein pain and a family history of blood clots. I was sent home with painkillers and told nothing was wrong. Again, I sought a second opinion at another hospital where imaging confirmed a blood clot that required urgent intervention.

Both of these experiences highlight a worrying lack of thoroughness, privacy, and patient care at St Peter’s Emergency Department. It is honestly a frightening place to be treated. I strongly urge others to seek care elsewhere if possible.

Would you like to tailor this for a formal complaint submission to the NHS or for an online review?

Great service at Ashford

I always elect now to go to ashford hospital. It feels so friendly and well managed. I am now in my 70’s so hospital visits become more of the norm. This year i have used casualty , knee surgery, xray and the hearing clinic. All were well managed and with good reception . Well done Ashford.

They don't care about your time

I had an appointment at 10.30am, for a chest x-ray, 11.20 I am still waiting. What is the point of an appointment? One of the women in reception needs to listen more. Sometimes I feel the treatment I am getting is because I am a black woman. The staff in reception was speaking to me as if I was a moron. I had to be patient with her. She needs to change her attitude.

Full of manipulative cockroaches, tried to enforce opening a door IN MY OWN HOME. I told them to leave and would only go after being told twice, making appointments without my permission, they’re control freaks and abdominal creatures, AVOID if you don’t want to be treated like something words can’t describe

Bad ER VISIT AND VISITORS BEWARE

Sorry no zero stars! Went too ER in severe pain and vomiting in the middle of the night. US citizen and private paying. Sat in the lobby for 3 hours, sent across the street an hour later then was seen by PA who then sent me too sit in SDEC, SDEC asked me the exact same questions and gave me Parocetomol after I told him that will not touch the pain I was in, and he gave it anyway, when he came back and asked if pain less, and I said nothing has changed, did he do anything no! Tells me I'm waiting too see "the surgeons" another hour then I'm called into a room with two young men who do not in any way shape or form resemble a Dr. they never examined me but said "your blood work shows nothing, you probably have some virus" I explained this pain was bad and my concerns and that I did not want to carry this into Europe and Christmas, perscribed antibiotics and I believe strong codeine. You cannot kill "viruses" with antibiotics. Taxi back too flat bad headache now set in, so I took both medicines hoping too kill the pain both abdominal and head now. Immediately began vomiting and feeling faint. Taxi ride back to the Hospital where I sat for 4 hours and when I saw people come and go I had had enough I asked too be discharged. The nurse looked up what I was waiting for and she turned too me with an uh oh look and said "you were waiting for the surgeon's you saw before and uh, they have came and went". I was furious! Then saw a Dr. and she did examin me and by this time dehydrated so she had too hydrate me, but pain still going strong, gave me anti-nausea pills and sent me home, no scans. Guess what got a bill from them 1,700.24 p for this!!! I AM LIVID. When I asked for an itemized invoice, they could not give me one just quoted some code SDEC checked off and it is a one price fits all. I ask you over 65 in the UK your pension is higher if you did not have NHS would you be able too afford this, and the service you got as described would you just pay, and it get's worse they threatened me if I do not pay they will not allow me back into the UK and notify the US of my delinquency. I complained to the highest mountain. Did the CEO call me, email me, text me NOPE! She went off of the Overseas Outpatient Liason and some women who's name I could never pronounce, and these women were never, ever in the ER with me. I am the patient and bad medical needs too be questioned. I cannot express how bad this is!!! We have traveled the world had my knee operated on in Portugual and even with a language barrier I was treated better at a worthy cost and itemized invoice not a made up charge picked out of a hat I mean who came up with 1,700.24 p. That is over $2,168.00. TWICE MY PENSION, AND OHHH, I CAN SPLIT IT. They do not get it the services and being forgotten and I left worse than I arrived and I have too pay that, and ended up in ER in Europe with itemized list and not rip off ridiculius. This is like the Department of Education in the US, highest paid with the dumbest kids! My private Dr. in Windsor charges 120p, blood test 50p, Parocetomol in the hospital 50p probably when you can buy a whole pack for .89p. Maybe a few other thibgs but not 1,700.24p.
I've taken it too Obersman's now and wondering if I need to speak to a lawyer, because so far the patient ME DOES NOT MATTER IN THIS SYSTEM! They apologize, but it means nothing robotic. Also, I was here with the strikes, wanting more money, higher pay. Why did I have two "surgeons" and neither examined me. Had me point too my pain area.

ashford walk in centre turned away

Went to ashford walk in centre with my son to be turned away saying they have reached there limit (this was 4pm in the afternoon). My son crashed his toe and the nurse came out looked at my sons injury and said go home and put a little plaster on it. I am hoping he does not have a fracture as they didnt even offer to x ray his toe. I am appalled by the service from the hospital. Every time we go there the service is shocking

Waiting over 2 hours in A&E.

Waiting over 2 hours in A&E.
Just been told to go and have an X-ray which is another 2 hours wait.
I don’t need an X-ray as I have cut and underside of my foot and just need a nurse to dress it properly and examine it.
So was told then I will still have to wait longer, although I was told I was next!

Hardly any patient gets called in the and amount for patients increase by the minute.

It is a bad state with hardly any staff 🤦🏼‍♀️

Avoid Avoid Avoid

My father passed away after spending 7 weeks in St Peter’s hospital. I would not wish that hospital experience on anyone. No empathy, extremely unprofessional, and the cleanliness appalling. I will not go into full details as it is private but what I will say is if you have the opportunity to avoid taking someone to St Peter’s I would recommend doing so. We complained whilst my father was in hospital but nothing improved. After his passing I asked for a face to face meeting with the relevant representatives of St Peter’s hospital. After waiting a few months and being given a date it was cancelled saying that one of the doctors was unable to attend. That’s how much they cared. To avoid this painful situation extending any further we agreed to a written report which was received a few weeks later. None of the report took away from our ongoing painful experience and I fear our experience could continue with other patients. Not only do we now have to deal with my father’s passing but we have those awful memories of his so called “care” in those 7 weeks.

Truly appalling

Truly appalling. They claim to have sent letters to me which I sometimes receive and sometimes don't, those I don't receive are never on my health record app. Went to A&E in April, was told I had angina and to look on internet about treatments and symptoms. Since then I've had outpatient appointments cancelled twice the day prior to appointment. When I was advised by telephone of a CT scan appointment I was told a letter would be sent to me and to go to my GP to get beta blockers before the appointment, which was impossible since neither I nor my GP ever received the letter. I wasn't even made aware of which type of CT scan I was getting or the procedure involved and when I rang up St Peters they told me I was getting a full body scan and to not worry about beta blockers. Had CT scan 3 months ago and still have no results. I had an echocardiogram 3 weeks ago and still no results. Their website states outpatient's should speak to their hospital doctor for results, but nobody is sure of who my hospital doctor is or who I should contact. My GP practice is not even aware of any of these events or tests since no correspondence from Ashford & St Peters has been communicated to the practice. None of the departments communicate with each other and communication with outpatients is very poor. Frankly, there's no point in having tests if you never communicate the results to the patient. Might as well as have a heart attack and just be done with it.

Thanks Dr. S. Goel from Oral Maxillo Facial Surgery

My review is purely for the Doctor here. I went here to the Oral Maxillo Facial Surgery Department for extraction of 3 teeth, all wisdom and trust me I am very nervous, super scared and due to these be very annoying to be dealt with as a patient. Not sure many doctors would have the patience to deal me once,

Dr. S Goel treated me very patiently from Xray to explaing me the first appointment about the treatment I would need and why. I kept pushing my appointments due to fear alone and once finally found the courage to go for my appointment due to the pain my cavities on the wisdom caused.

She was not just patient but spoke to me calmly explaining exactly what she was going to do and made me feel better during the whole process encouriaging me all the way.

With her expertise and help I have got 2/3 extractions done. I am very thankful to her and will greatly recommend Dr. Goel for your Oral Maxillo Facial Needs if you have been referred like me to NHS for further treament, Thanks to her and Nurse Poonam too for being super polite and patient.

On other note, Parking is a nightmare here, so Please reach here for your appointment atleast 30 mins before. I had to literally run to the appointment even then being 5 mins late and the charges are excruciating too.
