Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 107 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with customer service, describing it as unhelpful, unresponsive, and difficult to access, often relying on automated systems. Customers frequently reported issues with their subscriptions and payments, including unexpected charges, difficulties cancelling, and losing purchased credits or access to their libraries. Many also experienced problems with the product itself, such as poor quality content, limited selection in the free catalogue, or books disappearing from their libraries. However, some customers also noted satisfaction with certain products, particularly the immersive full-cast audiobooks and the availability of unique titles not found elsewhere.

A Decade with Audible: Great Books, But the Service Slipped and Now I’m Out

I’ve been an Audible member for a solid 10 years now, and honestly, I’ve enjoyed it for the most part—great selection, easy to use, and it’s been my go-to for audiobooks on long drives or lazy weekends. But their customer service has really gone downhill over the past few years, and it’s pushed me to the point where I’m signing up elsewhere.
Case in point: I recently ordered a series of 3 books, gave them a fair shot, but just couldn’t get past book 2—it wasn’t my cup of tea. So, I returned it along with the 3rd one since I knew I wouldn’t listen to it. Next thing I know, I’m slapped with a ban on returning anything at all! This isn’t what I expect when they’re always bragging about their “easy return policy.” Feels more like a bait-and-switch to me. Anyway, after a decade of loyalty, I’m taking my business elsewhere—pretty disappointed it’s come to this.

Did the chat they had an issue not…

Did the chat they had an issue not allowing me to review although my listening history shows I had completed over 80 books theirs showed me completing 1. In 30 min of chat i got a message telling me to call their system as this was not fixable.
I really wish they were not the only game in town as this is just unacceptable

Audible subscription is a scam

Audible subscription is a scam. They give you credits to buy books when you want but if you want to cancel you subscription they take all tour credits away (like you didn'tpay for them ). You can pause your subscription but they will restart it without any notice to you. So you are kept in a loop because you don't want to loose what you paid for and so have to keep paying..

Customer service - non existant

I love listening to books on Audible, but the customer service is terrible. I wanted to downgrade my subscription and it basically isn't possible without deleting my account and starting again.
I've been waiting for an agent for 4 hours,

Unauthorised Payment and Poor Customer Service

I am extremely disappointed with Audible’s handling of my subscription payment. Without my authorisation, Audible charged my business card after failing to take payment from my registered personal card. At no point was I informed or given the opportunity to update my payment method before they unilaterally selected an alternative card from my Amazon account.

This has caused significant inconvenience, as the business card is not intended for personal expenses. When I contacted customer service to request a refund and ensure the correct payment method was used moving forward, I was met with unhelpful responses and no clear resolution. They wanted to refund in 7-10 days but take new payment today. As of right now I have paid twice and have to untangle the company implications.

This is a clear breach of trust and poor practice, and based on my experience, I would advise others to be extremely cautious when linking any payment methods to their Amazon account if they also use Audible. A company should never assume the right to charge a different card without explicit consent.

I am now considering escalation of my complaint to the Financial Ombudsman and Trading Standards and will be reconsidering my use of Audible going forward. Extremely disappointing service!

Am I allowed to say stupid and selfish…

Am I allowed to say stupid and selfish these days? I've used Audible for years and these people have had a lot of money from me, especially in my days of two accounts to keep up with how much I was listening to this content. No, at a time I have lost many listening hours due to a terminal illness, I wanted to restart while I can and this is the time these idiots bloat the app to a point when my old phone is apparently not able to carry that software burden. I understand why the industry forces us to upgrade devices, but I am not having it. I contacted Audible to see if their geniuses had a simpler option without all the unnecessary bloating/ possible spyware? The simple answer was No, push off. Unacceptable. They tried to be customer focused once (I think) no sign of that now and their score here seems to confirm that. I won't threaten to leave as I probably will be soon anyway, not by choice, but I want to UNDERLINE how bad Audible are now, how unreasonable they are in terms of demanding we buy new devices to listen to content that simply does not require that technically. Audible are a disgrace and I am not the only person who does not want to be forced into upgrading or going onto to ridiculous monthly contracts to listen to a book.

These bad reviews of Audible are unfair…

These bad reviews of Audible are unfair and suspicious in my view. The subscription is good value for an Audio book and has not increased for years. Books which you have bought are yours to keep. The plus catalogue has a number of very high quality items. Audible is one of the best subscriptions on the Internet today and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

No issues

As someone who finds reading more difficult these days due to medication and menopausal brain fog, I find Audible to be a great second option when I want to get through a book quicker. It's easy to listen to at home through the app on Alexa and walking with my pods in when needed. No heavy book, cumbersome book taking up my bag and space in my home. However it's also nice about sitting in a cafe or on the bus with a book. I get Audible as an addition with my Amazon Music subscription so I don't pay the £7.99 for one credit and just instead get one book at a time to listen to. I'm not someone who has multiple books on the go at once, so it suits me fine,

Begging isn’t attractive

Paused my account for 3 months - no reminder that it restarted. Charged
Had 3 credits, chose 3 books all utterly rubbish - don’t know if there is a snippet you can listen to first I didn’t see one but it would save wasting a credit. Not paying for monthly subscription so cancelled…they beg you to stay through three screens of please don’t go and now I have an email offering half price for three months. No

Amazon doesn't care about customers

Amazon doesn't care about customers. Firstly, the subscription fee for 1 book during a month is not worth it. Secondly, they have a habit to block accounts and uneasy restore procedure. You practically have to dial to US number, where many customers are outside of the country. So all my money spent and library is lost. I had to open new accounts, which later were also suspended, and spend a fortune to buy those books. TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT!

Audible works for me.

Audible works for me.
In 2020 I was renovating my house and whilst painting and decorating needed something to listen to other than music.
I downloaded Lucinda Rileys’s books and then listened to them all.
When I was gardening, walking my dog, cleaning my house , driving or when I went to bed or woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t sleep - I listened to audible books. Also - on holiday - on the aeroplane , lying on the beach - with my headphones on.
Previously I was an avid book reader. But wrongly I suppose - I haven’t now got the time or inclination to sit down and read one in a good light with glasses on etc.
I do appreciate however that the sight of your physical book with bookmark in on the coffee table or on your bedside table is wonderful.
I have never ever had a problem with access.
However - it is expensive. £7.99 per month for only one book and subscription.
If you are dying to listen to another of the author of that fab book that you’ve listened to quickly - you’ve got to wait for one month to get it or -or pay another £7. 99.
Also - you can’t swop audible books with friends or pick them up in libraries or charity shops.
You can get free audiobooks included in your membership. I’ve listened to some fab ones that have then launched me into another author.
It’s a habit that I’ve got into. Wrongly or rightly.

Things you should be aware of

The app itself is great, easy to use, so many options to choose from, customer service, in my experience is very good, they've always been helpful.
BUT, I feel like they're scamming people when it comes to credits.
BEWARE, you can only have a MAX of 6 credits on your account at any time, after that they start to delete your paid credits! They explained that this was becaues there is only room to store 6 credits at a time!! On an intelligent app like Audible! This seems like a ludicrous reason to deprive customers of credits they have purchased.
Also, if you cancel or a payment declines and your subscription is no longer active, you loose ALL of your credits that you've paid for in previous months, again what an unreasonable thing to do.
It seems like they've just made up illogical rules as an excuse to take peoples money.

One best seller a month POOR!

So just to make things clear to new subscribers with the same old question I had. NO, YOU CAN ONLY READ ONE TOP BOOK/BEST SELLER A MONTH! To simply things if any of the well known music subscription apps worked in the same way as Audible -you would only be able to listen to one album in the top 100 chart a month. You can not read a top thriller that you'd see in your high street book shops today and read the latest crime novel the next day -it's all about credits - no credits no chance of reading a top book- only from their bargain basement, sorry I mean plus catalogue. Move with the times Audible! especially at those prices when it's comparable to buying the actual book. I've already cancelled by free trial- and that's no easy task🤔

A total rip off

A total rip off. I have been paying a monthly subscription without knowing that the books I thought belonged to me in my library were not actually mine. I found this out because I paused my membership because I had a few books to catch up on. I paused it for 90 days then when I tried to listen to an unfinished book in my library I was informed I couldn't without an "active subscription" I was locked out of my library.
I also found out that you cannot roll over accumalative book credits to the next month despite paying the subscription.

This is the 2nd time I have submitted a review for audible over a 4 year period. When submitting this reply there was a rude comment before I began saying "What's wrong this time" Pah! I'm off

Took payment after I cancelled my membership

Cancelled my membership on 18/01/25. Received email confirmation:
Your Audible membership will be cancelled on 29 January 2025. You’ll continue to have access to your credits (unless they expire), plus titles in the Plus Catalogue. You’ll also still be eligible for certain member discounts before this date.

30th January comes around and lo and behold they bill me £7.99 for another months credit.

Contacted their shoddy customer service team who offered no apology, explanation or gesture for wasting my time, just said they have cancelled my membership and a refund will be issued in 7-10 working days.

Appalling service!
