Do not rent through Auto Europe.

Do not rent through Auto Europe.

My experience was that Auto Europe advertises attractive rental rates that apparently cannot actually be honoured when you arrive in the United States if you do not hold a US driver's license.

I booked a car through Auto Europe at a confirmed price. At pickup, I was told that the booked rate did not apply to me because I did not have a US driver's license and that I would have to pay a significantly higher price to receive the vehicle.

The most shocking part was not the additional charge itself, but Auto Europe's response afterwards.

I filed a complaint and repeatedly asked a very simple question: If the rate was not valid for me, why was Auto Europe selling it to me in the first place?

That question was never answered.

Instead, Auto Europe completely ignored the issue and hid behind the rental company's explanation. They made no serious effort to investigate why a confirmed booking suddenly turned into a much more expensive rental at pickup. In the end, they simply told me to contact the supplier directly.

This is unacceptable.

I did not book with the supplier. I booked with Auto Europe. The advertised price came from Auto Europe. The confirmation came from Auto Europe. The problem originated from an Auto Europe booking.

If a company sells a rate that cannot be honoured and then refuses to take responsibility when the customer is charged far more than expected, that tells you everything you need to know about their customer service.

Based on my experience, I would strongly advise against booking through Auto Europe.

Problem solved - original voucher did not reflect the goldrate I booked

After my negative review on TrustPilot, AutoEurope got back to me in no time and solved the described problem very efficiently and to my full satisfaction. It just confirms that we customers have to be aware of occasional glitches in otherwise smooth running processes. I am leaving the original one-star review below for the sake of information and transparency.

This is my first negative evaluation of AutoEurope - so far I've been rather happy with my previous experiences, but not this time!
On AutoEurope.ch, the offers vary depending on the display language (French or German - better deals on the German speaking version). This is bizarre...
The Goldrate I booked (3 additional drivers + tank of gas) became ONE SINGLE additional driver (add 130$ for 2 more, to be paid locally) on the voucher.
I asked for clarifications using the screenshot I took at the time of booking (July 23) - customer service rep. replied July 27, claimed my screenshot was for another package, and didn't answer my questions regarding the sudden change of conditions between booking and voucher (additional drivers), the discrepancies between offers on the French and German speaking versions of the website, and the exact charges I will incur locally. Now awaiting some supervisor's intervention...

Dear Sir/Madam, I am forced to give a low rating only because I find myself facing unnecessary extra charges because you continue to charge Swiss customers, esp. long loyal ones like me, in € when it is quite possible for you to do it in CHF, which is national currency of CH

As our European central is located in Munich, we charge all our rates in Euro. If we would charge in CHF, this would lead to extra charges due to differences in exchange rates, which we want to avoid.

1 minute too late, no car

Voucher: EU18287319-1

Never again Auto Europe!!! We arrived 30 minutes after the pick up time at 18.30 at the Geneva airport Europcar rental location. The opening hours on the Auto Europe voucher showed 7.30 to 23.30, so you assume no problem at all. The result was devastating! Nobody was at the location, because they changed the opening hours to 18.00. We were not able to reach anybody, and we were not anywhere close to get this car, or any other car. When Auto Europe was reachable the next day they said: “It doesn’t matter that we gave you the wrong opening hours, when you come one minute too late to pick up the car you lose the right to rent it and you don’t get refunded.”

Don't use Autoeurope during Covid!!

I booked a van this summer for a family vacation. Since Autoeurope always lets you cancel bookings shortly before the trip I didn't worry about any problems due to Covid. When I found out a few weeks later that the country we were travelling to was closed to visitors I tried to cancel the booking but was told I couldn't. Even though their website said I could cancel within 48 hours of the trip, the first email I received from them said I could cancel within 48 hours of the trip and the final confirmation email didn't say anything about the rules changing. I would have had to read the contract, several paragraphs down, to see the difference. Don't use Autoeurope during Covid!!

EDIT: They have since offered me a voucher as compensation.
