As a new member I was expecting to be taking round the whole facility and how to access each facility area like the sauna, swimming pool, tennis area etc. I booked an induction and was only shown the gym area.

Penny chasing lockers
I like that you have everything under one roof. I was, however, quite shocked to discover that we were required to pay for lockers in the swimming area every single time that we opened and needed to relock them. It creates a feeling of the centre "chasing after the money". That felt pretty bad.

I have been a member of Thornton heath…
I have been a member of Thornton heath leisure centre for two months now and I honestly wouldn’t change places!
The staff are very friendly and very welcoming are more than happy to answer any inquires I have.
There is lots to do for example, gym, classes and swimming and I can even can book badminton etc!
I would give more than five stars if I could!

Thornton Heath Leisure Centre is a great place to come and do all your usual gym or swim activities/workouts. I also like that the staff and managers that work at the centre and are really friendly and helpful with any questions or queries I may have on the days that I visit the centre.

Ignore all the negative reviews, especially the ones about staff.
Firstly, staff are always happy to help and this is from my personal experience and from what I’ve observed. I recently lost a very sentimental item and the staff (James and the Manager - I forgot to ask her name) were extremely comforting and supportive to help me find it!!
Secondly, there is a good variety of classes and their booking system works well. Yes there’s a cancellation fee of £3 but that’s because their classes are so popular that it’s not fair for those who are on the waiting list if people don’t turn up and there’s no consequence.
I don’t use the actual gym much as I do classes but there’s enough equipment to have a decent workout.
The sauna, steam and swim area is a brilliant place to unwind after a stressful day/week. Clean and spacious and always hot!!
Well done all at Thornton Heath leisure centre and keep doing what you’re doing

Great local leisure centre.
We recently move the area and we’ve been using this gym for few months now. The staff are very friendly and helpful we use the classes a lot and the gym sometimes. Highly recommended if you like different type exercises classes and gym.

I have been to many gym and this is by far the dirtiest . The gym never looks cleans the toilets and changing rooms are not clean at all. I have to go home to shower after a gym session.
It’s a shame because the rest of the facilities are okay.
Staff are pleasant shame about the cleanliness:(
Pool steam and sauna are very clean which is good.
I have just signed up and I’m considering moving already as I would not shower in changing rooms.

Thornton heath leisure centre
Thornton heath is the only facility where members have to buy tokens to use the lockers. Why? When all the other center's in Croydon use padlocks.
Why is there no cleaning schedule for the centre so members can measure cleanliness against the schedule?
On weekends there appears to be a lack of staff onsite to ensure essential items are available to members, like water?
The building was opened in 2004, yet the roof leaks off the main stairs, inadequate notices of the danger on approach making the area very dangerous.
The equipment is damaged, or will damage your garments as the cushioning has cracked. I pay you to delivery leisure services, yet in return I feel you are not delivering what I pay you my money for.

The gym facilities
The gym facilities and gym classes are really good sometimes the instructors are slightly late which can be a knock-on effect for the next session if you book one back to back.
The changing facilities are appalling they smell of urine the toilets don't flush, the showers are old they just need a new makeover, somewhere pleasant to change after you have had a tranquil time in the steam and sauna or swimming
You don't see much staff in the gym to ask for assistance if you have a problem using equipment or how to use it (or to even tell you that you are using it wrong if they see that happening)

If you require some assistance in the gym, you can book an induction and meet with a fitness instructor who can advise you on how any equipment/machines work and build a personalised fitness plan for you.

2nd Visit
I was greeted cordially by the Assistant Manager Sam (he didnt identify himself as that - just Sam) and he was very helpful in directioning. The Gym itself is good - plenty of machines - low usage at the time and day I went but I am sure its buzzing most days. Although there is no induction available (it seems only one person does that and they are away) the machines have good instructions and it was easy to wayfind. The only issue - small amount of mould on the walls in between the sauna and steam rooms - otherwise all good.

I like the facilities
I like the facilities, it's only a 20mim walk from my house which is good. What l don't like is having to pay 25pence to use the lockers, l don't want to keep bringing my card to the gym incase I loose it, people are just leaving there clothes in the cubical, it's petty, it should have been included in the monthly fee.

The staff aren’t friendly
The staff aren’t friendly. You are just pushed around. I booked an appointment not once was I told of the closing time except when the staff call out that it is closing time get out!
Even at that they are rude about it!
The hygiene is horrendous! The swimming pool toilets are ones not to be used because they are dirty especially when the pool area is busy.
The gym equipment isn’t wiped and the one that isn’t working isn’t indicated.
The time I was there, there was no staff to make an inquiry with!
My experience so far has been very upsetting. To say the least. The facilities are all what I needed but very lacking when it comes to customer service and hygiene

Swimbies Little Dippers class is great
Swimbies Little Dippers class is great and my baby is gradually building confidence in the water. The class size is small so there is lots of direct communication with the teacher and plenty of space to move about the pool. The proximity of the changing rooms is great and the whole family can change together. Unfortunately a few of the baby change cubicles don’t have changing tables which is a bit annoying when trying to find a space to change before and after class. Occasionally the pool feels a little cooler than expected - not great for little babies but we have a wetsuit wrap so this helps to keep him warm.
