Faulty,dangerous cooker

The poorest service I have ever received.

A fairly new cooker, that kept tripping all the electrics every time I switched the oven on, and clearly with manufacturer’s faults, took 9 engineer visits from Britannia and almost 4 months to repair. From the outset the oven control buttons overheated and were far too hot to touch when the oven was in use. The wiring in the oven was wired incorrectly, and the hidden element below the oven floor was buckled, split and twisted. Subsequent Britannia engineers were unable to find the actual reason the oven was tripping the electrics. Parts were damaged further in the ‘repair’ process, and 9 months later the oven control buttons have collapsed into the cooker. After calling a reputable local engineer, I was told by him that it was because of faulty work on the cooker previously and the cooker is dangerous and unsafe to use as it is. The substandard repairs have only added to my loss of confidence in this company’s services and products. To be fair, the last two engineers that attended were very helpful.

I have been unable to have the cooker repaired, as Britannia haven’t responded to my request for the necessary part, over 7 weeks later, even though I went through their manager, by phone and email.

I consider the cooker too dangerous to use now, as I have to consider the safety of my disabled daughter - I thought I was buying a reputable brand with an induction hob for safety reasons. This company should be replacing appliances with manufacturer’s faults such as these.

I would say to anyone that it is best not to buy from this company - put safety first and just buy another brand.

The retailer I bought from, Appliance City, has had no response from Britannia either regarding my faulty cooker, and they haven’t taken their responsibility as a retailer either.

I was taken aback by the amount of people that are having similar issues in the reviews here. Legislation needs to be strengthened here to protect consumer rights, such as is happening in the rest of the EU now - manufacturers will have to replace parts free of charge for 10 years after purchase in the EU. It is clear this is nothing but a money spinning enterprise for companies like this.

Brittania dual fuel range cooker - never again!

Have had a Brittania dual fuel, 2 oven range cooker for about 20 years. At that time there was far less choice than now and nothing like Trustpilot reviews. Just been fitting the 4th set of hinges to the main oven door, awful design! Oven doors never really fit properly, Have replaced fan oven motor 4 times , thermostat not very accurate. Replaced main oven fan element 3 times and so it goes on. Not at all surprised reading all these negative review. I gave up long ago ever trying to get any help , advice or spares from Brittania. UK Whitegoods spares in Kilmarnock sell everything you are likely to need at sensible prices and excellent, rapid service. The Brittania cookers look quite good but once you need to get beneath the surface you realise that they are really cheaply made and some really poor detailed design. Would certainly never buy one again

Expensive and difficult to repair

I bought our Britannia Dual Fuel Range Cooker nearly 15 years ago. I have had a smashed oven door in the past (for no apparent reason), replaced main oven door seal 3-4 times (currently nearly £50 each for a bit of rubber), one rack that holds the shelves has broken and we cannot get a replacement from the company, the little green neon light at £19 is unavailable. The main oven is currently not working due to the 9 function control knob breaking. Britannia told me they are currently unable to service out of warranty products and that I need to find a local engineer and that the parts I require will have to be ordered from elsewhere. Thus far I have been unable to find a repairer of electric ovens who is also gas safe registered in my area; the rack has been on order for over a month; the seal I ordered specifically for this model was the wrong size. I would not recommend this brand.

Expensive product and zero customer service

This is a "small"company. It's worth setting out some basic facts that you should understand before you purchase.

We bought our cooker 5 years ago from John Lewis. John Lewis offered free installation and promised delivery within a week.

1) Britannia don't seem to keep "stock" each cooker is made to order so you could well be in with a wait of 4-6 weeks depending on how busy you are. Don't believe the sales people.

2) Very difficult to get anyone to actually install one of these cookers. John Lewis don't do it. I live in London, it would be harder in rural areas. Get an installer lined up before you buy.

3) Spare parts are really expensive. If you don't believe me check the official website - £13 for a single screw.. seriously?

4) Glass on oven door smashed under heat after 5 years of relatively low intensive use. £110 for a piece of glass. They shipped the wrong part and then their ordering system went down for 3 weeks. Spare parts are not well described on website, so difficult to know what you are ordering.

5) I would agree with comments on here about zero customer service. When trying to order replacement parts there was no plan B for when their ordering system went down. We are a family of four, in lockdown with no oven. Not there fault entirely, but when you get comments from the phone operators like "we are Britannia, all our products are quality this is why they are so expensive" it sticks in the throat.

6) I made multiple requests for them to walk me through the website to help me order the right part etc. or a call from the senior customer service team. I got zero response and loads of lame excuses why they couldn't help me.

I took the plunge in the end, ordered what I hope was the right part. Britannia said they would not refund me if it was the wrong part. It turned out I got the right one, but only by trial and error.

I would not buy from them again. I wanted to "buy British", but feel completely let down.

What Customer Care?

I wish there was a no star review. When we moved to our house we inherited what we thought was a fantastic range cooker. It has never been fantastic but now it has developed a fault which I can't get fixed. First call to them they were only helping with people with warranties due to Covid. Not a good excuse. They suggested I found someone local. Nope, no one will touch them with a barge pole. Emailed them, received a reply 2 weeks later telling me that if I phone they can book me a repair or a service. I have tried 3 times to get through on their number and have just hung on for too long each time. I have now emailed them my details but am not expecting a reply anytime soon. Absolutely disgusting customer care.

The wost range oven EVER!!

The wost range oven EVER!!! As well as the WORST customer service. The first Britania oven didnt work from day one, within 12months we had 3 engineers out regarding the same faults. Over heating, uneven heating, rubber seals came off and no bulbs in the oven. Eventually a replacement oven was given but we are having the same problems all over again. Heat is escaping out of the door and staining the front enamel. So what was a cream range oven now has brown stains up the front. I cant leave food in the oven to cook for the correct time without having to turn the dish as everything burns and catches on the right hand side. I am terrified i am going to poison someone because it still doesnt cook evenly. I now hate cooking thanks to this awful oven.

Looks good but that's it. Don't buy

I have had nothing but bother with my expensive range cooker. First to go was the hinges which were replaced. Then the rubber seals needed replacing, they didn't fit properly as in the doors wouldn't close tightly. Britannia's answer change the hinges. Thermostat isn't working as it burns everything even at low temperature. The paint has blistered due to heat escaping. Never again. Replacing ASAP

I wish I had read the reviews before…

I wish I had read the reviews before wasting money on a Britannia range oven. I made the mistake of thinking John Lewis would sell reliable product. It never cooked properly from day one. Under guarantee complete oven replaced with new one, but it never cooked properly. Good job we took out John Lewis Added Care because it has been needed over and over again. Britannia engineers have fitted new thermostats but it can never be relied on to cook properly, they say it is normal to get a face full of scalding air when opening the oven and normal for pools of water to gather underneath. Yesterday and today we tried without success to get an engineer out, Britannia seems asleep. Do not buy this brand!
Engineer has now called and reports cooker is working to spec, which is temperature within 10%. He set both ovens at 220 and scanned. One read below 200 and the other above 240. Be warned, if you want to cook at 220 it will either be undercooked or burnt!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please take great care dealing with this outfit (part three)

Fourth engineer visit scheduled today. Engineer has just called to say he has no parts on his van (third such call over three months) and can't do my job. When he searches my job number he receives an error message. He has left messages for the service centre and nobody has called him back.

Nobody has replied to my email @info, that I sent two weeks ago.

I telephone 0344 463 9705 (option 1) and receive an automated message saying that all systems are down, call back Monday.

My question is: How is this company still operating?

Long term dreadful service

Booked in for a full range service - paid £££££
Engineer arrived was unable to do anything, the parts I had asked for he did not have. Left saying we will be in touch to rearrange that was over 3 weeks ago. We have called multiple times and either (as is often the case) the computer is down or you just cannot get through on the phone.
The problem of a misaligned door, when new hinges were fitted by BL has been going on for YEARS, each time they come they say, it will settle into position, guess what it DOESN'T.
DREADFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service - I booked a engineer call out on the 14th September and paid the initial deposit (almost £200). On the day of the engineer appointment (25th Sep), I was informed by the engineer himself that their internal system was down and he would not be able to attend the session. For almost 3 weeks now I’ve had to chase Britannia to schedule a rebooking to no avail. The majority of representatives are unsympathetic that we’ve not had a working oven for 5+ weeks and have done nothing proactive to help. (I know a global pandemic is ongoing but the response has been really poor).
5+ weeks in and no resolution and no working oven.

How do you get through to customer service

My oven is just a year old. Having had a £2,500 oven for just 3 months the Glass smashed. This was very difficult to get an engineer to replace and in the end I paid for an engineer to replace glass that was posted to me.
Now the fan oven has stopped working. I waited on hold for 2 hours today to speak to customer service as the oven is still in warranty but I was then cut off.
How do I speak to someone to get this mended as not having an oven and 3 children under 6 years old is a nightmare

My 15 year old Britannia is an 8/10 star

Am researching a new cooker for a new house.. reading the Britannia reviews on here thought I'd add my own for balance . I inherited a top of the range Britannia when I moved in to my current home 15 years ago I dont cook family meals on it every day , but it has been well used , still looks great and has given me no trouble whatsoever ..In fact I've enjoyed it so much I'm considering a copper coloured Britannia for my new home. ( bit worried now that the build quality may not be what it once was ! )

DO NOT BUY BRITANNIA

DO NOT BUY BRITANNIA! I bought a Britannia 100cm electric range with induction hob for about £3k 3 years ago; it has been nothing but trouble since Day 1 - intermittently the oven would just cut out/blow all the electrics in my house. Engineer from Britannia sent - still the same problems. Then the oven would overheat and all the hobs would cut out. Finally last week the whole thing cut out, blowing all my electrics yet again; I called Britannia, who have refused to come out because it is no longer under warranty - they suggested I find a local engineer myself! TERRIBLE customer service on an expensive item. PLEASE do not buy a Britannia range.

Never again.

I have owned 2 Britannia cookers in two different properties bought at about the same time. I was pround to be able to suport a Brirish made product.

Except they are not made in Britain! I was fooled by the name Britannia, silly me. I am told by a friend who is a senior manager for an appliance manufacturer that they are made in Italy!

And they were both of very very poor quality. I spent a fortune on having a very expensive engineer appear to repeatedly replace the little devices that light the burners. The door fell apart. And so in.

Readers of this review will not be surprised to hear that I have replaced them with kit manufactured in Germany.

I bought a 90cm Q Line model less than four years ago. So far the seal has snapped and had to be replaced three times; the fan has broken and had to be replaced three times; and just now in the middle of cooking dinner, the oven stopped. We've spent almost £1000 on engineer visits and replacement parts. This oven is just the worst.

We had a Britannia cooker before this one, and it was great for 15 years, which is why we purchased this one. Something has gone wrong in the meantime, and the oven is just not the quality product you would expect. The gas hob is fine, and it looks good...but the oven is atrocious......and it over-heats too.

I think I'm just going to have to buy a whole new cooker now. I'm not happy at all.The call centre staff and engineers have been fine. They deserve a better product.

I would never recommend a Britannia…

I would never recommend a Britannia range cooker. They are very cheaply made, to the extent that the paint (not enamel) soon cracks and looks hideous. The cooking results are fine but we have just moved to a new house where the Stoves range is infinitely better - and they are considerably cheaper. I am embarrassed to leave the old Britannia to our old house buyer.

Have Britannia 90cm range oven and it has holes in the main oven. When I contacted the company they sent a panel to cover the holes. Recently the elements have sparked and sent magnesium into the oven. We thought we had brought a quality product that would last a lifetime. The cheap materials in the oven make it a danger and fire hazard. We love the cooker and the gas rings are fab and we'll made bit the oven is hopeless. In this world of trying to re-use and not create waste Britannia is not a model of excellence.

Dangerous overheating!

My 8 year dual fuel cooker has just been checked after increasingly bad smoke and chemical smells emerging for the last few weeks. It seems like the temperature has been so hot that holes have appeared in the oven! Looks like I now have to buy a whole new cooker as the repair person said it would cost a fortune to replace. Meanwhile, it’s a fire risk. Great!
