Excellent Service (again)

I've used DTL twice now - once for a client and once for a friend. As an IT professional, I occasionally come across a hard drive so badly damaged that I cannot recover the data myself. I have tried three or four different companies over the years and I would clearly rate DTL as the best - both in terms of cost and service.
Yes, data recovery is not cheap but they are the most competitive I've found. They have been very clear about what needed doing and helpful when I needed to ask them questions.
They would be my first port of call if/when I need such services in future.

Expensive but worth it

My Laptop HDD recently decided to crash and burn on me, and with it, all the photos that me and my wife had collected together, before and after we got with each other.
Datatracks were the best recommended company to go for, and they haven't failed to deliver, yes they are pricey but they don't do any work unless you agree to it, and for me it was money well spent.

Music collection and valued photographs

I was relieved when I received an email from DTL advising they had recovered all my lost music and valued photos from a failed NAS drive, and they had done just that.

I have now had all my files returned to me.

Yes, it is expensive for an individual, but the service is excellent and in my case 100% successful.

In my opinion DTL have a well earned reputation for a quality service.

I would have no quarms over using them again, though I now have everything backed up threefold!

Spiraling Cost

Read below how cost can go up, this was a NAS drive where the power supply on the motherboard had failed:-

From the fault category or the information you have provided in your case notes, we anticipate that the hard drive has File System Corruption. The recovery price for a hard drive with this type of failure is £99 (plus VAT)

We were cool with this!

We are pleased to inform you the evaluation has been completed on your failed storage media.

Please note, there is nothing to pay upfront and you only make payment if we recover data from your device

Recovery Costs and Service Options.
Economy Service (14 – 21 days)
File System Rebuild - £145
Unreadable Sector Remap - £145
TOTAL Cost excluding VAT - £290

We could see how once they looked under the hood cost may increase. So we said go ahead.

I am pleased to inform you we have successfully extracted data from the failed hard drive. It has proven to be more difficult than anticipated as the disk become totally inoperable.......
Data integrity of the recovered data is estimated to be approximately 60-65%.......
We are able to offer a file verification and repair service in order to increase the file integrity to over 97%. This service is £199.99 ex VAT....
Total amount payable is £295.80 or £370.80 which includes a new hard drive (60-65% usable data)
or you can pay £535.79 which includes data integrity of over 97% and a brand new 1 TB portable hard drive.

We were no happy about another price increase and the fact that the quoted £290 was now £295. They replied, extract below.

Also, we are not obligated to inform our customers of every possible eventuality that may occur during the complex nature of a data recovery, your implication that we should is ridiculous. This would simply not be practical.

They did not answer the £295 until I asked again.

We paid the total cost : £489.99 exc VAT But if you want the hard drive back that's another £40.

The data service was OK, they got some things back, not all (Lacie encrypted files were too tough). I am disappointed that the cost spiraled up alarmingly, without prior warning. We had all the data just not in one place, so if we would have had a realistic quote in the first place we would have not progressed.

Will I use them again NO
Would I recommend them NO

Sorry you get what you pay for. We did not even get the 15% discount they advertise on the website "Complete the form for an INSTANT QUOTE & Get 15% off".

Reply from datatrack-labs.co.uk

The review above is written by Simon Lundy of Spot On Solutions Ltd. Simon has decided to give us a rating of 1 star despite the fact we recovered the data he required, in the agreed timescales and for a price which he approved and consented to which is also approximately £200 - £500 cheaper than what many of our competitors would charge.

The reason for the negative review is because we rejected his request for a full refund after he had received all his recovered data (obviously he had copied all the data and was after a professional service for free, please be wary of this tactic/deception before providing services to Spot On Solutions Ltd).

Simon decided it was morally correct to attempt to gain a full refund after they had received all their recovered data returned. All services offered to Simon were NO OBLIGATION.

The Motherboard of the NAS had failed, it had corrupted the file tables of the hard drive and also the disk was suffering from bad sectors. This could be linked to the motherboard failure, if the disk was powered down incorrectly then CRC errors could have arisen at that stage.

Based on Simon's description of the problem we provided an estimate of £99 plus VAT via our website, the very same email states that the costs could rise subject to an assessment. The costs did rise as it became apparent that the problem with the NAS drive was worse than he led us to believe.

In regards to the price increase from £290 to £295.80.
I am no mathematician but £246.50 plus VAT @ 20% equals £295.80.

£290 - 15% ONLINE Discount is £246.50, therefore a 15% online discount was actually applied to Simon Lundy's case despite his previous fabrication of the truth. I think this really highlights what sort of person/company we had to deal with.

The extra services offered again were NO OBLIGATION, but we believe we have a certain duty of care to all our clients, if we believe we can achieve a better result for the client then we will offer an additional file repair service.

As far as we were aware, Simon was happy with the service until we refused his unethical and possible fraudulent request for a full refund and to only award us 1 STAR is a bit of a farce considering we actually recovered all the data he required for a cost which was significantly cheaper than a lot of rival companies would charge to recover so much data from a damaged 2 TB NAS drive.

So Simon paid a grand total of £535.79 which is inclusive of VAT @20% and a brand new portable hard drive which we sell for £75, we believe this is an exceptional price for what we provided, considering what others charge in this sector. Just because Simon did not believe the data is worth that amount does not mean the price is wrong. Also he paid the fee after agreeing to all charges as we did provide him with a no obligation quote.

So to conclude, Simon will not use us again or recommend our services because...

We provided a free assessment of his failed media.
We provided a no obligation quote to recover his data.
We completed the recovery within the agreed timescales.
We provided a list of files before he paid us a single penny.
We returned his recovered data on a brand new hard drive and dispatched it with royal mail special delivery.
We refused his request for a refund.

Data Video Recovery

Data Video Recovery

Data track labs recovered a very important file, which contained a lot of memories for my family and myself, the files had been damaged and some even went missing. I had firstly tried another company who analyzed the problem and where going to charge me over £300 for the repair of the video files however I got in contact with data track labs who quoted me the much lower price of £95.00 They assured me the price would not change which made me feel comfortable to continue with the process.
I sent off the damaged memory card to data track labs who then analyzed the memory card and assured me that all the files had been recovered. Once I received the videos back I noticed that most of the files where still damaged and that the videos missing where still not there, I emailed to enquire why the data had come back like this, I was told that only the ‘live data’ had been recovered. I then explained to Neil that this is not what I requested I had asked for all the data to be recovered not just the live data.
There was a little friction between emails due to some misscomunication however once the issue was sorted Neil then proceeded to have my memory card analyzed again and then had all the data sent back to me. Due to the service I received I would recommend data track labs as they are reasonably priced and will help you fix your problem. Thanks again to Neil and the data track labs team.

Kind regards Stacey

All Photos Recovered

I managed to corrupt an SD card transferring images to my computer. Perhaps I shouldn't have been using a cheap USB SD card reader.
Datatrack Labs managed to recover all the images on the card which are now safely loaded on my Hard disc and offline back up.

It wasn't cheap at £275 but I know it was complicated because I tried my local computer shop before and they couldn't do it.

Read the terms and conditions.

I too was sold by their attractive webpage and marketing.Thier online quote was £195 to recover data.I told them the drive had been opened already. So off it went.Soon I was presented with a charge of £120 to assess the drive which I payed as I had opened the drive. The returnig quote was £750 +vat (wow).I decided not to proceed as this exceeded the value of the data.I was then presented with another £20 bill to have my drive returned. These extras are in the small print.Read them carefully!

Reply from datatrack-labs.co.uk

Firstly, Mr Dunmow is correct in stating that we do have an attractive webpage (as do many other companies) we are proud of the quality of our website. However, with regards to our marketing, he seems to be insinuating that this structured in a manner as to deceive or entice, when it is actually highly informative and accurate.

Mr Dunmow also seems to be insinuating that we are trying to lure or trick customers by not disclosing our terms and conditions fully. The reality that Mr Dunmow fails to point out is that he himself had to tick a checkbox to declare that he had read our terms and conditions, in full, before being even allowed to submit his quote request on our webpage, as do all potential clients.

He clearly ticked the checkbox to be allowed to proceed, but did not read them. It should be noted that our terms and conditions are clear and easily accessible at the foot of every page.

No traps or tricks, they are there for all and sundry to read. They are also extremely comprehensive, clear and accurate.

Therefore, as he had declared he had read the terms and conditions in full, he should have been fully aware of the cost of £100 plus VAT for Hard drives that have been previously opened. We, like our competitors do not offer free assessments on drives that have been possibly compromised. Free assessments apply only to unopened drives. We are not being unreasonable in our application of this condition.

It should be noted that Mr Dunmow did in fact pay for his assessment to be carried out, accepting that the drive had been compromised by being previously opened.

If he had read our terms and conditions as required, he would also have been fully aware that there is a small standard handling charge for return of the media should our quotation for recovery be declined and the media be requested to be returned. He clearly did not read them.

Unfortunately, as a result of the drive being tampered with there was a high level of media surface damage and the read/write heads had been destroyed. As a result, this would have been a complex and extremely difficult recovery and was quoted at a highly competitive £750 plus VAT, considering the level of damage.

Unfortunately, as stated by Mr Dunmow, the value of the data was not equal to the costs of recovery.

Mr Dunmow’s statement of ‘WOW’ suggests he disagrees with this cost and possibly has more than enough knowledge and experience to recover the drive himself. If this were the case, then why he requested our services we are not sure.

Unfortunately, this is simply a case of the client not being able to accept the costs, or responsibility, as a result of their own actions I.E. opening an extremely complex piece of equipment that they have no knowledge or skill in working on.

Mr Dunmow’s review should serve as a useful warning to any customer who is tempted to do the same.

We are at a loss as to why the customer has awarded us only 2 stars considering they declined our service and we performed all actions asked of us with accuracy and efficiency.

Too many extra charges - not all they appear to be

Well like many I was sold by their attractive webpage and advertising. All seemed great. I told them I had already had a look inside the hard disk (probably a mistake!) and they still offered me the free evaluation and free pickup and free return. Once they had my disk it all started going pear-shaped. They demanded an extra £120+vat up front to do the assessment. Return was going to be £20+Vat if I declined the work, and if I did accept the work they would charge for the media they sent anydata back on - another £130+Vat in my case. On top of the 'fixed price' quote. So the quote of £195 turned into £534. If you looked carefully the various extra charges are in the terms and conditions - but am I the only one who doesn't read every word? Save yourself the hassle and stay clear.

The above review is written by a client who has misrepresented the truth.

We charge an assessment fee for all hard drives which have been mishandled and opened. This is made clear in our terms and correspondence.
The client foolishly attempted to repair their disk without the necessary skills, understanding, knowledge and facilities. In their own words, they were very foolish. It clearly states in our terms and conditions which the client has read and agreed to (they must confirm they have read them and agree to them before we even provide any information).

The client attempted to bully us into providing a free assessment by offering not to write negative feedback, we believe bullies should not be tolerated and should be stood up to so we refused their request.

Following this refusal the client has decided to be very loose with the facts and has provided the misleading negative feedback.

The fact of the matter is that if the client was not so foolish and had not provided a false statement/declaration then they would not be in a position to want to leave such a negative review. The client is very bitter as the assessment would have been free if they had not compromised the hard drive and also they are probably not used to having someone stand up to them refusing to bow to their demands.

This review is now in the hands of our solicitors.

Missing pst file

Datatrack Labs recovered a critical pst file which went missing on my hard drive. It occurred after windows check disk attempted to correct a fault. Do not run check disk as it makes things worse and very expensive. Thank you Neil for all your help.

QNAP Failure

Our QNAP refused to play ball, tried everything to get it back online. My IT Manager recommened Datatrack Labs and said they would be able to help. He was right. They asked us to remove the disks and send them direct to their lab. They provided a free quote which we agreed to and then provided a list of all of the data. We didn't have to pay anything until after they performed the work. A wonderful exprience with this company.

Lost coursework on a memory stick

My daughter managed to lose all her coursework on her memory stick. She was making the mistake of using it as a primary storage device and not as a back up device. The stick would not respond. Datatrack Labs diagnosed a controller chip issue, removed the chips and read them in a chip reader. They then extracted the data from the raw data dumps. Very impressed with what they could achieve.

Five Star Service!

Contacted numerous companies regarding my hard drive failure, most of them were only concerned about me getting my disk sent in as soon as possible, Datatrack however took the time to listen to my problem and it wasn't a pressure sales phone call. They advised on what they could do and gave me a belief that I would see my data again. Also they were the only company which didn't try running the other companies into the ground.

Datatrack Labs restored all my data to a handy portable disk and sent it to my works address secure delivery within 48 hours of payment. A big thank you to Neil the operations manager. Five star service.

Life savers!

If you ever drop a Samsung portable hard drive then these guys should be your first port of call. I foolishly went to another company who held the disk for 4 weeks and then confirmed it was impossible to recover the data. Datatrack Labs managed to recover 3 critical PST files from the disk, if I could not get that data back my job was on the line. They are life savers!

It cost me £100 to have it assessed as the other company opened it and a further £500 for the recovery. Datatrack Labs informed me if I went to them first then the assessment would have been free and the recovery fee would have been £200 cheaper. So take my advice and save yourself some money, go straight to Datatrack Labs if you ever need a professional data recovery service.

Broken Memory Card

Datatrack Labs were very professional throughout the whole process. They saved over 90% of my photographs from a very poorly memory card. I am unable to award the full five stars as they refused to provide the data on numerous CD ROMS so I had to settle for a USB flash drive instead. I would recommend them to my friends and family in a heartbeat.
