A change of venue!
Although we usually go to the Southport branch we decided to have a slightly longer trip out to Preston for a change. We had an enjoyable lunch once we had got the hang of the new ordering arrangements!
In the afternoon my wife bought a few greeting cards and a plant for the garden.

Customers for 6 years
We have been customers of Dobbies, Preston for 6 years. The staff are good & the main shop OK but the restaurant has become tired & neglected. The kitchen closes COMPLETELY at 3:00pm, despite the menus being left on the tables, and the outside seating area has been taken over by dandelions which you can see through the dirty windows.

Poor. Over charged on unmarked plant by £15 in one store as later saw same plant in Preston store much cheaper but manager would not refund even with original receipt.
Also staff don’t seem to care about customers, very unhelpful

Restaurant untidy with dirty tables
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the restaurant was only serving drinks, cakes and scones. Therefore the restaurant was very quiet but we only wanted a coffee anyway. Even though the restaurant was quiet there were still quite a few tables that had not been cleared. When the tables are cleared they are not cleaned. The crumbs are just brushed into the floor. The sticky menus are just untidily strewn on the tables. There should be some sort of stand so that the menus can be tidily kept in one place. The restaurant staff are very nice although the woman who clears the tables looks a bit dozy. The coffee is very nice otherwise we would not go there.

Always a problem with the cafe
We have a dobbies clubcard so we visit to get our free coffees at least once a month and usually have a meal as well. However the past few times have been a big disappointment. The cafe was shut for food due to staff shortages. the cafe had no hot meals the next time due to unforseen cirumstances. It does seem to happen a lot, even when it is open they change the system a lot e.g. queque for food, then queque for drinks, then queque for payment. The next time, just order everything at the till, which ensured a long wait to order. Even when the food is on and comes out it is not always as it should be, for instance we order the steak pie and chips and the gravy was like water, we told the waitress and she took it away and brought some more 5 minutes later......it was exactly the same! We ordered crocque monsieur, which literally had a scraping of sauce on top, it really was not good enough for the prices you charge.

The dining experience
Glad to see the lighting in the restaurant has improved considerably.However our dining experience was spoilt by intrusive loud pop music.Average age of diners midweek - 50+ yrs.Many large companies fail on this point.Can Dobbies review this "one size fits all" policy?Drop the volume and give us some easy listening.

A well stocked garden centre with the full range of plants, pet foods and accessories plus lots of other products. Lots of plants to choose from but the house plants can be in need of water.

Found all I wanted in the garden centre. Enjoyed some good food in the restaurant. Lady on checkout was very pleasant and helpful and sorted out which of the extra points coupons I could use.
