The car was easy to find and the application has been improved. It is easier to find how to find the keys and to get set up. The app allows you to extend time and generally worked well. Unfortunately the car was in rough shape when I got to it. It was dirty, had a strong smell of marijuana, and many cosmetic things which didn't bother me as much (including a missing lock for a key, many scratches, and dents).

Terrible app design
Terrible app design, particularly when the user wants to correct any mistake in the input that was just submitted. Also, no way to appeal or re-calculate a faulty read in the gas tank gauge. I got charged for missing gas even though I'd just filled it up.

The best rental app
I rent from the same owner 95% of the time, his cars are always clean and easy to find. The owner is very responsive, and I never have an issue with his rentals. The app is very easy to use, I would recommend this app to anyone who wants to rent a car and have flexibility. Unlike traditional rentals you don’t need a credit card and you can make changes to your return date and time with paying some ridiculous amount.

So much for a great new App!
The folks at Getaround did not consider my account to be important enough to migrate correctly to their new app. I had been a trusted user, and had booked several rentals utilizing their old app since 2022. During that time, I had gained a rental history, as well as, a good rating. Moreover, I was completely verified with the app.
Fast forward to March 2023 when I attempted to log-into the new app. My email and password did not work. Gemma encouraged me to enter the information correctly, because it was obviously my error. After hours of rediculous email exchanges with Gemma, she finally realized that my user information did not migrate from the old app to the new app. She continued to give me the wrong guidance, and encouraged me to just log-in using Facebook. This caused me to create a whole new account, which I did not want. I only wanted to be able to login to the new app using the same credentials that I had always used. Then she tells me to go ahead and delete that account, and just create a new account with a different email address.
By doing so, I basically started all over again, as if I was a brand new user. None of my rental history, ratings history, nor verification could be migrated from the old app. Why? It's because I had signed-up originally using an email account and not with Google or Facebook.
For those users like me, it's tough luck. I needed to go through the whole process all over again by getting verified.
Gemma basically replied "Well at least I refunded you the $16.00 license verification fee" I asked for my issue to be escalated, and as expected, nothing happened
I literally wasted hours, and I'm so irritated that all of my previous information was simply lost. I was completely disregarded by Getaround

The new app does not work very well
The new app does not work very well. starting and ending a trip doesnt register until photos upload which sometimes takes a long time. this created confusion with an owner because the app said i hadnt returned the car when i had.

Very negative experience!
Very negative experience!
I rented a car via Getaround in Washington DC in March 2024.
The car broke down after 3 hours of driving.
I had to pay $60 for a cab and $50 for a train to get back to Washington DC. GetAround refused to reimburse me for these extra costs.
I wouldn't recommend this system to anyone. Instead, use traditional rental agencies like Sixt or Enterprise, which can help you if you break down.
MUST AVOID!

Dreadfully mismanaged platform
Personal automobiles represent enormous unused capacity. Unless you're a delivery driver, your car probably sits idle 90% of the day. So in principle, community car sharing, with a well designed platform to manage hosts and renters, is a stellar idea. Unfortunately, in practice, Getaround is a disaster.
Oversight and accountability are lacking. Customer service people are friendly but have no decision making authority. Support is disjointed and scattered across phone, text, email, and help desk ticketing system. Issues cannot be escalated.
If you're a host, be prepared for someone to smoke in your car, trash your car, or even crash and/or total it. Then be prepared for a lot of hassle getting it sorted.
If you're a renter, your experience may vary - but you might get a car that's unsafe to drive, as I did (tires totally bald), or deal with an app that crashes repeatedly, or sit on hold with a hapless Joe doing outsourced customer service. It's 4am where he is...
Whatever you do, READ THE TERMS OF SERVICE. You might be surprised to learn how little accountability renters have. They can steal your personal possession left in the car, full stop, and there's nothing you can do about it.

I have submitted several inquiries and concerns of my past rental. I have yet to receive a response. I feel disregarded and disappointed. I am trying to settle an appropriate balance with the rental before April 4th. Please escalate my concern to the appropriate administration.

No choice but seek another option …
It is too difficult with accessing customer service and the turn around time with getting an email response. Customer service used to be accessible via phone!! Also having an unnecessary delay with getting deposit refund after claim was cancelled by owner. It may be a convenient option to some but it is not worth the hassle. I hate to stop using but have no choice to seek easier options.

Good value at the cost of a little hassle
The car is great. It is clean and in good repair. It is good value for the money. I still feel it is unfair to require me to pay for the 10 minutes at the start and end of each rental plus the time spent topping off the fuel tank.

The new Getaround app was kinda buggy and looked like it didn't start my trip until I was already driving and then didn't look like it ended. I locked the doors got the confirmation message that my trip was completed and then got another notification about 45 min later asking if I needed more time on my rental.
Outside of that, the car was a little dirty, but worked well and did the job!

I ended up having to rent a vehicle…
I ended up having to rent a vehicle very late at night after checking it out on the phone got in drove home didn't realize until I got home the car was on a donut. I immediately contacted getaround who informs me that because I had already checked out the car there's nothing we could do about the donut but I could reach out to the owner. When I reached out to the owner he let me know that the Pops Tire was in the back of the trunk and I was more than welcome to take it to any Discount Tire to have it fixed. So the next morning I went to Discount Tire which shouldn't have been in my job at all but Discount Tire informed me that not only is the tire popped but it had a bent rim that needed to be replaced and they didn't have one until two days later. I live in Colorado where it did Snow during my rental time so I couldn't drive the car on a donut in the snow storm. I ended up having to pay $20 for the car owners warranty at discount tires as well as $80 and some change to replace the rim. I also had to book the car for another 2 days because what I needed it for cannot be done until the tire was fixed. I was planning on driving over 400 miles. It has been almost 2 weeks now and I have not been reimbursed for the Tire Plus the room that I have bought and get around has not reimbursed me for the extra time that I had to pay for using the vehicle I am very upset with this outcome and get around has done nothing to comfort me or even gave me an inkling of Hope that they were going to do the right thing by reimbursing me for my time because overall I spent over 12 hours and 2 days at Discount Tire fixing this tire for the owner of the vehicle who shouldn't have been able to rent out a car on a spare tire!
