Recently took my car here for a mot…

Recently took my car here for a mot they failed me on headlight height and lose nuts around the suspension they charged me 50 pound to tighten the 2 track end nuts I initially thought it would include the wheel alignment when I agreed over the phone but when I collected the car their was still bad alignment so they literally charged me 25 pound each side to tighten the the 2 nuts on the track rod end wich would be the equivalent of less then 20 seconds on each side 1 minute of work for 50 pound they insisted that other nuts was only hand tightend but even if they was 50 pound to tighten up some nuts with ZERO alignment is disgracefull I will be taking this further.

Useless technology , and understaffed

I booked a slot to have two new tyres fitted through the website . I waited 4 days for the slot but when I arrived they had no notice of my booking and didnt have the tyres that I selected. They then said they could get them for the following day so I agreed to return the following day after 1200hrs. The following day at 1230hrs I returned but the tyres had not arrived. I agreed to return again a coupe of hours later. I returned a third time and was unable to actually get in to the site because of the large number of parked cars. I left and then came back about 60 mins later and the tyres were fitted within 30 mins . They seemed to be understaffed and when it came time to pay the card machine was broken and the mechanic had to read my card details out over the phone to another person who took the payment which is clearly not secure. The staff get 3 stars , the technology gets zero stars and the service overall gets just one star.

Placed an order on line

Placed an order on line, rang the Truro depot to confirm. Steve gave me a time and date which due to mechanical issues I couldn't make. They held the tires for me and fitted me in the next day. Service was brilliant. Competent, friendly, knowledgeable staff fitted two tires and swapped my wheels front to back. Super guys, super service... I will be going back to HiQ Truro for tyres in the future

Rip off merchants

I took a 10 year old car with only 14k miles on the clock that was in very good shape to get an mot. I'm handy with mechanics, so had checked the car before taking it in and knew It didn't need anything major. No advisories on its last mot as it was a very tidy car.

They failed it on a rust hole in one of the front footwells. I thought this was weird as it hadn't had any advisories for rust on any of its previous MOT's and only looked to have slight surface rust when I checked. They then proceeded to feed me a load of nonsense about it being a difficult job to sort as they said they'd have to remove the fuel tank. They quoted me £375 for it to be fixed for the retest... 😂. If I knew nothing about mechanics, because of how convincing the mechanic was being and how thoroughly he explained the process, he'd have had me thinking I was getting a good deal.

Unfortunately for him I do know a lot about mechanics. I knew you wouldn't have needed to remove the fuel tank at all, I knew approximately how long it should take and how much welders/mechanics charge per hour, so had a good idea of how much it should cost to fix. I listened to his rubbish about how difficult it would be to fix the car and how expensive it would be, and told him I'd be taking it elsewhere.

He looked a bit worried then and started explaining why you could see shiny metal on the hole that was there and that it was nothing to do with them, he said I must have hit something in the road and it's come up and put a hole in the bottom of the car... If there's a hole in your car that's been made by corrosion, it will all be rust coloured, if it's been put there by force, it will be silver shiny metal. I know I checked the car before I set off, and if I'd run over something on the way that hit the underside of the car with enough force to go put a hole in it, I'd have definitely noticed. So this made me very suspicious.
They're supposed to use a plastic probe for checking rust areas on cars, it's a simple sprung plastic instrument that you prod the rusty areas with when inspecting, you push down I until it depresses the sprung part of the probe to see if it pushes though with a specific amount of force. If it pushes through and is in a load bearing area of the structure, it needs welding. There was no serious rust on that car to begin with, so strongly suspect they've jammed a screwdriver or something through it to make themselves some work.

I took it to a garage run by someone I know and trust, it was a lot further away which is the only reason I didn't take it to him in the first place. I told him what was wrong with the car, also told him I suspected that they'd put the hole there, and told him the ridiculous story they'd given me, he just raised his eyebrows and laughed, and confirmed my suspicions. They had quoted me £375 just for the patch weld, an absolutely ludicrous sum, my guy charged me £70... Which is how much it should cost! If you're unsure how much welding should cost on your car, look up the local welder and see how much they charge per hour, or ask around other mechanics.

I saw the reviews for this place and thought they should be alright. Unfortunately these reviews are left by people who don't know anything about cars or mechanics so they wouldn't have a clue if they were getting a good deal or not. The guy at HiQ, even though he was talking complete tripe about the car and how hard the job was, sounded really convincing. If I didn't know about mechanics I'd have thought he was doing me a favour when I reality he trying to have me for a clown. I'm quite young so he probably wasn't expecting me to know about mechanics.

I mean, £375 quoted to fix it at HiQ for a patch weld in the foot well of the car... vs £70 from a good, trustworthy mechanic, which is what it should actually cost... Ludicrous. I can't know for sure if they put the hole there or not, but given that they were obviously being very dishonest and trying to take advantage of someone they thought was clueless about cars, I'd be very surprised if they hadn't.
