There was an error made, one both parties contributed too. However once John Pye understood we got the matter sorted. Persephone was speedy and clear and helpful. I was relieved and pleased by the service . I have had the same speedy responses from John Pye when required

Well and truly fell for John Pye small print.
Bought a Metabo wet/ dry vacuum for work. On the auction site, vacuum still in polythene, brand new unused, what a bargain, or so I thought. Not working at all, contacted John pye, sorry there’s nothing we can do, we don’t guarantee any product they make money on.
In short, if you’re a vendor with a batch of faulty products, pass them on to John pye, they have made it legal to rob you blind.
Website cancelled, never again.

Terrible experience!!!. I bought a washing machine and a freezer from John Pye Birmingham. There was no indication of the condition of the goods in the auction description. I paid for it and the delivery only to find out that BOTH THE WASHING MACHINE AND FREEZER DO NOT WORK!
I called engineers to repair it and both items got written off as unrepairable.
Please don’t buy white goods from John Pye unless you have gone in person to check that they actually work . Learn from my lesson, it’s NOT WORTH THE RISK!
Now I have to pay for a removal man to get rid of the items as I cannot return it.
A real terrible experience ;(

I recently purchased an item from John Pye Auctions and encountered a small issue, but I have to say the way it was handled was excellent.
Ryan from the chat support team was incredibly kind, friendly, and professional throughout the whole process. He kept me informed every step of the way and made sure the issue was resolved quickly and smoothly.
It’s always reassuring to receive such attentive and understanding customer service, especially when something doesn’t go quite as expected. Thanks to Ryan’s support, my experience turned into a very positive one.
I would definitely recommend John Pye Auctions to others and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.

**Edit: see John Pye’s reply for the exact templated response I received several times via email**
I ordered a dishwasher from John Pye Auctions which arrived damaged. This was very clearly due to poor packaging, as the box they packaged my appliance in was way too small to contain the dishwasher, and they just taped it up and wrapped it in bubble wrap. Rainwater got in through the wrapping, the box, and into the machine, so it additionally smelled mildewy. Worse, the dishwasher's hose had a perforation - this was the most exposed part of the machine, it was clearly damaged in transit. When I raised the issue, John Pye refused to acknowledge any fault with how the item was packaged and declined to offer compensation for the damage caused. This mirrors the experience of countless other reviewers — the company hides behind 'sold as seen' and templated responses rather than taking responsibility. Multiple times they told me to look at the terms and conditions, and that they hoped this would clarify how auctions work going forward... which was just insulting. I would strongly advise others to avoid purchasing large or fragile items unless they are picking them up themselves. I even got all the way to their head office for complaints just to be sent photos of the bubblewrapped dishwasher and told that it was well-packaged. Very disappointing.

I feel compelled to share my experience to warn others considering purchasing from this company.
The item I received bore no resemblance to how it was presented in the listing. The advertisement showed the stroller boxed, with no images of it assembled or outside of the packaging, and there was no mention whatsoever that it was second-hand. Given that there was space provided to describe the item, it would have taken very little effort to include this crucial detail. A single photo of the stroller out of the box—or simply stating that it was used—would have been enough for me to make an informed decision and avoid this purchase.
What I received, however, was not just “second-hand”—it was completely unusable. The frame is broken and shows evidence of attempted repair as well as heavy staining on the fabric. The condition is so poor that it could not reasonably be resold or even donated. It is, quite frankly, only fit for disposal. I cannot understand why an item in this state would be listed for sale at all, and it feels as though the lack of transparency is intentional.
I appreciate that the company advises viewing lots in advance, but when listings fail to accurately represent the condition of items, that policy does not excuse the omission of basic, honest details.
This experience has been particularly frustrating for me as I am currently on maternity leave and without an income. I turned to this platform specifically to find affordable second-hand baby items. I have no issue buying used goods but this went far beyond that. I am now left out of pocket, needing to replace the item, and having to pay to dispose of the one I received.
I am extremely disappointed, both with the condition of the item and with the response I received when I raised the issue. The customer service response was that the images I provided were consistent with the sale images and that they recommend viewing the item or to adjust bids accordingly. I would strongly advise others to exercise caution, as the listings may not accurately reflect what you will actually receive.

It's a scam, don't believe the pictures and description, they are not real. In reality they sell broken things that cannot be returned.

Extremely Disappointed with John Pye Auction House – AVOID!
We purchased an AEG microwave from John Pye Auction House, but what we received was nothing like what was promised. The microwave wasn’t even shown on the website, as it was boxed up, which gave the impression that it was new and unopened.
Scam 1:
During the bidding process, it was not clearly communicated that the item could not be collected in person. Instead, a £40 delivery fee was added on top of the payment for the product. This was misleading and extremely frustrating particularly it took almost two weeks to arrive.
Scam 2:
Upon opening the box, we found broken polystyrene packing stuffed around the microwave in a haphazard manner. Worse, the glass control panel was badly damaged, rendering the microwave completely unusable. We immediately contacted John Pye with photographs of both the damage to the unit and damage to the AEG box it arrived in. Their response? "Sold as seen," with no offer of a refund or resolution. The Chesterfield team were a waste of time with regard to this complaint.
It’s clear that they dismissed the possibility of shipping damage due to inadequate packaging, which suggests they were fully aware of the damage prior to listing the item for sale but decided not to disclose. The fact that it was kept in a closed box, deliberately hiding the condition of the microwave, only raises further suspicion.
This feels like a fraudulent scam, and we strongly believe it needs to be exposed to protect other buyers from this misleading and dishonest practice.
Buyer Beware!
I bought two products as one lot. They did not send the main product. The other product was missing an integral part preventing it from functioning. I had to chase them on both issues.
Be careful on this auction site, the pictures do not reflect the condition of the products. Only use if you are close to the auction warehouse and are able to check the lots before bidding.

Trying John Pye auctions the last month or so the items ive won honestly not bad, I was quite happy. We took out chances on 2 vehicles 1 at 1600 and 1 at 4 grand all in with the fees. Stated as no keys. Had keys made up and both vehicles with major engine problems worth nothing more than scrap. I suspect these aren't seized vehicles but purposely put into auction with major problems and keys thrown away. Wont be buying again.

The platform is easy to use and looks great. Unfortunately, many items received have been opened and tested. This is especially not good if you're buying makeup and skin care.
I've received expensive used makeup, which go straight in the bin.
When I contacted customer support I was told I should travel to the auction room to view items before purchasing them. Sorry but I live nowhere near any of their sites. I'm simply hoping to receive goods I can use and not throw into the bin.
I think someone is testing makeup (though they deny this) and returning them back into the packaging.
Small items in large boxes arrive damaged because they were not packaged well.

Very helpful and swift delivery of items.
The customer service in chesterfield were very helpful as well. I was able to return certain goods and was partially refunded for it. So it’s great experience all together.

Response to Reply:
Thank you for the templated response. I was anticipating this standard reply, which unfortunately ignores the specific issues identified with the listing.
While you highlight the 'viewing period,' this was a 'Parcel Delivery Only' lot. Suggesting a buyer should travel to a site to inspect an item that your own terms prohibited them from collecting is a significant logical and logistical contradiction.
More importantly, your response fails to address the two primary failures:
Misdescription: The listing utilized images of a clean unit. The item delivered was heavily soiled with internal debris—a significant hygiene concern that was not disclosed.
Electrical Fault: The unit is non-functional, with no power. Standard industry practice and consumer law require items with known electrical defects to be clearly marked as 'Spares and Repairs' or 'Faulty.' Failing to do so while providing 'clean' imagery is a material misdescription and against the sale contract.
Original Review:
I won a Hoover H-Upright 300 from John Pye Auctions (Chesterfield). The auction images showed a clean unit, but what arrived was a health hazard. The vacuum was heavily soiled, filled with debris/dirt, and missing several essential accessories. Most importantly, the unit does not power on. It is electrically dead.
When I contacted customer service, they completely ignored the fact that the item was misdescribed and faulty. They hid behind "viewing periods" despite this being a "Delivery Only" lot where I had no physical way to inspect the item. To make matters worse, they threatened to restrict my account if I disputed the charge with my bank.
It is illegal under the Consumer Rights Act to misdescribe an item and sell non-functional electronics without stating they are for "spares/repairs." Avoid this auction house; they have no interest in consumer rights or basic hygiene standards.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Received many faulty items, all of which were not cheap! Hundreds of pounds spent and wasted.
Broken pans and smashed lids, air fryer does not work, shed with missing parts so it cannot be built, missing parts to a dining table, broken bench, significant damage to chest of drawers, broken plug on a lamp. The list goes on!
Customer service is terrible - they don’t respond to your emails detailing the issues. I had one response only and all they did was copy and paste terms and conditions. They do not care that they are sending out faulty items and advertising them incorrectly. They take no accountability.
Avoid at all costs!
