Main thing was that you listened

Main thing was that you listened, at the first of the year the change over to the new system was rolled out with very little notice. It was horrible but you seemed to listen when we said we wanted the old system back because it was more kid friendly and easier to use. Plus not so harsh on the eyes since our kids are online for so many hours a day. The computer requirements for the online classes were not clear, one site said 2 core processors, one said 4 cores were needed and teachers needed 8 core processor computers just for this Engaugli system which hasn't worked any better then the old system. It also meant my kids could no longer use their tablets to connect. I ended up having to buy 2 laptops for them to use for school. This new layout that came from what we said is much better now, I understand new things come up and we must be flexible and thats ok. Our teachers have been great and very helpful throughout the year and thats one key thing that keeps us coming back instead of going over to full home schooling. The interaction of my kids with others kids and adults online in school, I think helps them be a little more excited for school and stay more social. More school outings would be nice and even field trips to local or somewhat local places like museums, parks with park rangers guiding the classes or even history class field trips to Williamsburg or Jamestown, maybe even Washington Dc? I know these field trips may cost us parents alittle bit of money and or time but I think may be worth it. It might help kids to see these places are real, as their teacher tells them about it. Maybe even have a live feed for the kids in the class who couldn't make it so they could still be apart of the class, and get to see their teacher and other kids in their class as they learn. Recently I received an email about our art teacher wanting to do a field trip to a local art museum and I think that's a great idea! Maybe have a math teacher take them for a Nasa field trip, ELA teacher take them on a collage field trip or Science teacher goto a science museum. I think if parents had a month long notice of an up coming field trip they could make it. Many places have reduced fees for large groups or field trips for students. I didn't do many field trips when I was a kid but I do remember most of them to this day 50 years later! Something different about going as part of a group and with other kids and your teacher! I understand its always a work in progress. I also do like that the kids can post pictures and info of things are doing in class or their interests, to canvas or teachers weekly newfeed. One thing I have not liked is when school would ask that they post to instagram or other social sites that are really not good places for them to be. I look forward to sharing more ideas and seeing what others come up with to keep making things better with school.

Proud Mother and Learning Coach

Review of My Daughter’s 3rd Grade Experience at Virginia Virtual Academy

This school year at Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA) has been a valuable and rewarding experience for both my daughter and me. As a 3rd grader, she’s grown academically, socially, and in her confidence as an independent learner. The curriculum was comprehensive and well-structured, offering a balance of core subjects like math, reading, and science along with art and social studies. The online platform was easy to navigate, and the lesson pacing allowed her to progress steadily while still feeling challenged.

The teachers were responsive and engaging, incorporating interactive lessons and frequent check-ins to keep students connected. My daughter especially enjoyed live class sessions, where she could interact with classmates and ask questions in real time. The small group activities and personalized feedback also helped her strengthen skills in areas where she needed extra support.

As her learning coach, I found the experience both demanding and fulfilling. It required daily involvement—keeping her on track, monitoring lesson completion, and supporting her through tougher subjects—but it also gave me a front-row seat to her growth and learning style. The school provided helpful guidance and resources for learning coaches, which made the process much smoother. Over time, my daughter developed stronger time-management habits and began taking more ownership of her work, which I consider one of the greatest benefits of the virtual approach.

Overall, VAVA has been a positive environment that fostered not just academic progress but also responsibility and self-motivation. While virtual schooling requires commitment and active participation from both student and learning coach, the flexibility and quality of instruction made this experience well worth it.

Drastic and Ineffective Curriculum Change

The curriculum in the past 2 years (2024-2026) has become almost completely online and parents no longer reveive teaching instructions. Although class frequency has increased, it is very hard for the youngest students (Kindergarteners-1st Graders) to keep up and retain attentiveness especially with such large classrooms. Children easily get bored and do not learn. Teachers do not have a system in place to personalize education and help students that are falling behind. As a parent, I had to teach my child many topics on my own again and without any teaching guides. K12 and VAVA have gone from being a 5-star education system (in years prior to 2024) to a 1-star one. The attendance reminder system was malfunctioning all school year (2025-2026) and teachers and admin were not sending notifications timely or on a regular basis.

Go back to old system

Last year our homeroom teacher was fantastic!!! This year if we get a response at all it is amazing. Our student had 3 teachers go on maternity leave . New teachers new way to do things. Then system changes mid year were confusing. Definitely go back to the way things were last year. Once a assignment is complete it changes colors. Make all the days assignments in one place.
