My teacher was really good and all the experience was great

A couple of months ago, I decided to try Kaplan International’s online English courses. Unfortunately, the entire process turned out to be slow, complicated, and very frustrating.

No Simple Online Sign-Up
Their website does not allow you to simply choose a course, register, pick a start date, pay, and begin classes. Instead, you must fill out a request form and wait for someone to contact you.

Uncomfortable Communication Process
The next day, I started receiving calls from multiple U.S. numbers (which my phone marked as spam). The calls were entirely in English, even though I had already indicated that my level is low and that phone conversations are difficult for me. We eventually switched to WhatsApp, but communication was still slow, with days between messages and repeated requests for information.

Endless Steps Before Starting
After I made my choice, I received detailed instructions for registration and payment, involving many forms. Even after payment, I was asked to provide several additional documents, such as a passport scan, proof of address, and bank statements.

Concerns About Relevance
When I asked why these documents were necessary, I was told it related to my country of origin. Personally, I do not see how this is relevant for an online course, and it made the whole process feel uncomfortable.

In the end, I decided to cancel and request a refund.

Final Thoughts
In my opinion, signing up for an online language course in the 21st century should be quick and easy — something that can be done in a few minutes so you can start classes the next week. My experience with Kaplan was the opposite: slow, bureaucratic, and frustrating. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend them.

I love all the friends here and also the atmosphere in class. It’s a good place for students to make friends and practice English together.

Friendly teachers and great experiences!

In April, I booked a study stay in Los Angeles with Kaplan International (booking handled by Alpadia), paying in advance for a modern residence, close to the school, with a private bathroom.

Four days before departure, they emailed me claiming that, due to a so-called “technical emergency”, my room was no longer available.
No proof, no equivalent alternative: they offered me a homestay miles away, with a shared bathroom and in a less safe area.

In practice, they put you in front of a last-minute fait accompli so you can’t cancel without penalties. It’s a calculated use of contract clauses: they themselves create the condition that allows them to keep money they shouldn’t.

The result? Only a 60% refund. The remaining 40% was kept as a “penalty” for not giving notice — a notice that they made impossible to give.
If this isn’t contractual abuse, I don’t know what is.

It feels like I ran into a well-oiled mechanism designed to take your money without delivering what you paid for.
Zero transparency, zero respect for the customer. Never again.

Pros

My experience was really short, just a week. However, the two teachers I met were really good, although one of them is not a native speaker.
Good teaching, good methodology.

International classes: students from various countries

Some cons

I was first in a class of 17 (seventeen !!) people, all at least 35 years younger than me. When I asked to be moved, I got into a more mixed class, lower level though, but always 17 people!!!

Family: they didn't really care about me; I always ate alone, had and made my breakfast alone, they spoke a really peculiar language (some sort of English mixed with possibly some slang or dialectal words) I could not always understand.

Great learning environment, with very kind and attentive staff. An amazing experience — highly recommended!

I spent 6 weeks there and really improved my English and gained a lot of confidence.

Pros:
The location of the college is excellent; you can easily reach anywhere in London.
If you are in a higher-level class, such as C2 or a Cambridge exam class, you are more likely to have better teachers.

Cons:
I believe that some teachers lack the necessary techniques to teach the language effectively.
Given that the college is located in central London, I expected them to have more qualified teachers and to offer more social events.
Additionally, we never used the coursebooks in class, which made it harder to track students' progress.
