I taught Othello for many years and was responsible for lectures and exam feedback, so I was excited but apprehensive, as I’d read a quite negative review, I think in The Times. Once immersed in the action, I loved the production! What a delight to hear actors deliver the blank verse with style, conveying the true meaning of the words, and to watch the full play, with no pandering to short attention spans, etc. The shift from ultra sophisticated Venice, where it’s possible for the love between the consummate military leader and the young, inexperienced girl to blossom, and the war zone of Cyprus, was very well portrayed. The minimalistic scenery and costuming were very much in tune with the focus of the play. I also appreciated watching with an audience that was fully tuned in to the dramatic irony, especially of Iago’s insinuating speeches and the horror of Othello’s murder/ summary execution of Desdemona. Loved the climactic ending! My hubby, who also taught A level, but TSD, agrees with all of the above. A standing ovation, which we all gave yesterday!

This is one of my fave Shakespeare plays, but I’d never seen it performed. David Harewood makes a moody, passionate and impulsive Othello, with a strong stage presence. Caitlin Fitzgerald is wise, witty, open and ultimately too kind as Desdemona. And Toby Jones is fittingly dispicable, jealous and snakelike. Knowing the story it’s interesting to watch it, seeing how the actors deal with how love unravels into jealousy and hate, because on the stage it can seem too swift, but it’s great. The mental turmoil is raw as Othello succumbs to Iago’s Chess game, and in the end the weak, insecure obsessive and possessive side of his nature wins out against the controlled, confident, loving side. I really enjoyed Caitlin’s performance as she is Othello’s match in terms of strength and she shines on stage too, and so the tragedy of her situation is felt. I loved the set, especially during the ocean voyage.

Wow what a show. The quality of the production and the acting was top class. The tension started in the first scene and didn’t let up. Shakespeare’s words clearly telling the whole tragic story with the modern dress setting bringing it right up to date. Amazing.

Absolutely brilliant performances from the whole cast but who knew the lovable Toby Jones could be such a monster? Fantastic acting. The set was perfect too and the staging pitched perfectly. If I had to make one small critique it would be that, whilst a brilliant actress, Caitlin Fitzgerald was too 'knowing' a Desdemona, who s supposed to be a young and innocent maid. That I didn't get from her at all, which is hardly a surprise given her actual age! But would I recommend this production? Absolutely, yes. I'd call it a must-see. And for anyone who thinks Shakespeare isn't for them, I went with a friend who isn't a big Shakespeare fan and only had the vaguest idea of the plot and she was able to follow the action with ease because the performances made it so accessible.
