No appointment needed!

I popped in on the off chance to open an ISA account and was seen to straight away. Hannah sorted it all out in a few minutes. Most impressed. But then I’ve always had great service at Newbury BS

Excellent service ⭐️

Excellent service ⭐️

I rang the branch to make an appointment to open a new account. There were no convenient times available online but the lady went out of her way to find an appointment that fitted around my working hours. At the appointment I met a different lady who was equally fantastic. Great service ⭐

NEWBURY BUILDING SOCIETY FREEZES MY ACCOUNTS WITH NO NOTICE!!!!!!!!

THE NEWBURY BUILDING SOCIETY wrote to me out of the blue informing me they had frozen my savings accounts and both accounts are now DORMANT!!
To unfreeze them I need to fill out a very long form
along with proving who I am along with a lot of personal questions that have no relevance.
They try this old trick hoping the account holders are no longer able to manage their affairs so they can steal the money with no one noticing !
Also some years ago I tried to borrow off the Newbury Building Society, a very nasty lady asked me hundreds of pointless condescending questions
over some weeks only to offer me a fraction of what I needed for a family emergency.
I easily borrowed 300% more elsewhere !
I will certainly be removing my savings from the NEWBURY BUILDING SOCIETY.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about the frustration and inconvenience you’ve experienced.

We understand how concerning it must have been to receive notice that your accounts were marked as dormant. As a regulated financial institution, we are required to follow guidelines to protect our members’ funds, especially when accounts show no activity over an extended period. This includes verifying identity and account ownership before reactivating dormant accounts — a process designed to safeguard your account and ensure your money remains secure.

To reassure you, we do not access our members accounts at any time.

We also regret to hear about your past experience when applying for a loan. Our aim is always to treat every member with respect and fairness, and we’re sorry if you felt otherwise.

Your feedback has been shared with the relevant teams so we can continue to improve our service and communication.

Help form the Mortgage dept…

I needed some help to transfer a large amount of money to the Newbury, I sought the help of INDU in the mortgage dept and she was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble, and she sorted things for me very quickly.
Always polite and a real pleasure to talk to.
Well Done young Lady.

Profiteering before it’s customers

I took a mortgage out with NBS several months ago (tracker) and despite two recent interest rate cuts (0.5% total) they have only shaved 0.3% off by June 2025. Typically will use the protecting savers argument or excuse but they have cut those rates by far more. Avoid at all cost, simple profiteering rather than passing on interest rate cuts. Won’t ever use them again (for anything).

Thank you for your feedback regarding the recent 0.10% reduction in our Standard Variable Rate (SVR), following the Bank of England’s 0.25% base rate cut.

Tracker mortgages have not been, and are not currently available. However we do offer discounted products, which are linked to our Standard Variable Rate (SVR).

While SVRs are influenced by changes in the base rate, each lender sets their own rates based on a range of factors. We understand it may be disappointing not to see the full reduction passed on, but we aim to act with consideration for all our members across both mortgages and savings when making these decisions. This sometimes means that savers and borrowers receive different changes in response to movements in the base rate.

You can see how we’ve approached this over the past seven years in the table on our website, which includes the period of rising rates between 2021 and 2023. During that time, we passed on only 3.05% of the total 5.00% increase to SVR borrowers, helping to protect them during a challenging period. https://www.newbury.co.uk/mortgages/mortgage-guides-and-information/current-and-previous-interest-rates/

Our SVR remains one of the lowest in the market at 6.30%, and many borrowers with SVR-linked products benefit from discounted rates well below this level.

We understand that any change to your mortgage matters. If you’d like to discuss this further, we’d be happy to refer you to a specialist in this area.

Human Touch

Having read the reviews regarding living in the dark ages they still hold on to the human touch element. In today's society to be able to speak to a human who can make a decision following an actual discussion is amazing. I left my job of 10 years working for a major high street bank who have adopted the "computer says no" approach as there was no longer a common sense approach to lending.
This far outways any modern technology. I'm with Newbury all the way.

Exemplary customer service

I used mylostaccount.org.uk to trace an old Newbury account that I knew existed but had no documents for.

I received a letter within a few days (dated the day after my enquiry) clearly explaining what I needed to do to access my account. When I rang to clarify some details I was immediately put through to the right team - and the same person who'd sent the letter - who went through thorough security questions and gave more excellent advice. This was followed up very quickly by email, as was the case for all documents and processes that needed to be dealt with after that.

I won't use Gemma's last name in this review as it's public, but she is an absolute star. I could not be more impressed, and have decided to keep my ISA with the Newbury largely due to her and what she represents in the Society. She clearly knows her stuff inside out, and I hope she's recognised for her excellent work. Thank you, Gemma!

Living in the dark ages

Newbury given an ISA transfer request (twice) well before maturity period expired. On expiry it took a week to process and then send the money to the new provider by (wait for it) a cheque. What kind of 21st century financial institution transfers money using cheques? Answer - Newbury. Someone tell them about the Faster Payment facility!! I see this sort of out-of-date operation has been mentioned before. No progress there then.

Awful company

There are no words to describe how awful Newbury building society have been to myself and my partner. We were using them to obtain a decision in principle and the first time it went through with no issues because of the rates going down we had to submit another decision in principle and this time they decided to decline us but no information was passed to our mortgage broker or myself or partner we were told they couldn’t discuss it with anyone so we were kept in the dark with no reason as to why we were approved and then rejected.

Nightmare dealt with tact, diplomacy and professionalism

Newbury have changed their on line access systems, so that I could not gain any access to my funds.

I am a Septuganarian, who has no idea how to deal with computers, let alone having to change the way I have to use them.

I made a call and spoke to 3 seprerate people ( yes 3, I told you I was no good at this)

Each were professional and incredibly patient and stayed with me, while they ensured I got to grips with things.

I was amazed at this type of treatment, in a world where time and tolerance are often forgotten.

Well done

time wasted on a mortgage

After my mortgage broker obtained my agreement in principle and we went to proceed, Newbury decided that as there are already a number of properties on the development they have interests in, there were too many properties and they no longer wanted to uphold the agreement. Had to go elsewhere as if buying a house isn’t stressful enough without the mortgage letting you down while you’ve already instructed solicitors to proceed!! Thanks for nothing but wasting my time.

Hi Charlie, thank you for your feedback, we can understand your frustration. In common with a number of lenders, we have a maximum number of properties we will lend on, on any new development. An AIP carries out a number of checks to ensure in principal we can lend, but does not provide a full underwriting assessment. Even when an AIP has been given it may not proceed to a full application and, unfortunately, we aren’t able foresee how many applications we may receive on any particular development, therefore we are unable to reserve a property on a development at the time the AIP is made. We will look into this further and see how we can improve this process.

The team at Newbury Building Society…

The team at Newbury Building Society are brilliant, they are helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Their Thatcham branch has a new Onebanx machine which is brilliant for depositing cash easily and quickly and also for making withdrawals when you don't have your card on you (which I never seem to have)

Newbury Building Society have always been a delight to deal with. They are the only bank branch that exist in Thatcham now, and with their Onebanx machine it's been great to deposit the cash from our charity.

Good Luck Dealing with this lot

Need to change my address. Asked how to do that - notify us in secure message.... did that Newbury Building Soc did nothing. Asked again ... O you need to send us a photo of your driving licence... but you can't upload that through your account .. you need to email mail it to us. Did that. Now when I try and log on it says "Account Already exists" well of course it does ! Tried to change the password - won't do that . Then asked for the memorable work - and failed to recognise that. Now the fools have locked me out of my account . Will be ringing on first day they are open for business. If not sorted with close the account and take my money else where . Life is to short to be dealing with this lot !

Wasted my time. Beware.

After an initial experience of a friendly and helpful service, it all went down hill rapidly. Firstly if you want to remortgage within the next three months this probably isn't for you because of their lead times. But more importantly be prepared to spend hours sourcing reams of documents for them only to be told that you're not eligible for reasons that they could easily have asked you about at the start. Wasted my time. Couldn't explain their illogical decision making processes and with appalling redress. AVOID.

Dickensian

I have had a 90 day notice ISA account with Newbury for quite a number of years which I am in the process of transferring to another provider. The transfer authority was sent to them by email. You would think it would be straightforward. Not so. I then receive an “amendment form” even though there is nothing to amend.
So I telephone Newbury. a very nice lady, always answers the phone saying “good morning reception”. You then go through a procedure of being transferred to someone who should be able to assist you. Similarly, the staff you get are always polite, but as they are not able to deal with my problem, I ask to speak to a manager. An hour and a half later, a manager contacts me. I explain to her that there is nothing to amend and I simply want them to transfer the ISA. She still wants me to complete the amendment form together with proof of identity. I explain there is nothing to amend I just want the ISA transferring. I explain that my signature is on the transfer authority which they have received and which will match their records. They are still not happy. I also explain that I had to complete another one of their forms a few weeks ago with all my details and signature on to enable me to access my details online. They are still still not happy. I explain that I am not prepared to complete another form and they will have to settle for my emailing them a copy of my driving licence. Having done so I receive an automated reply to my email, telling me that there will be up to a five day response. Really!!!
Come on guys, this is the 21st century. I have ISAs with other providers and their websites and procedures are slick and up-to-date.

Great Products with Excellent Service

As a new customer opened a new fixed rate Bond. Very quick and easy on line process to follow. Money transferred to the bond account without any delays. Excellent service comparable or better than many larger financial providers plus good interest rates to boot!

A friendly branch in Didcot town centre, however the online service is rubbish.

Friendly staff, and a branch on the high street. Good communication, and the ‘Existing Members’ account pays good rates. As banks or building societies go the Newbury is pretty good - well OK - sort of - depending on what you are looking for. It can take an hour long visit to the branch to withdraw a hundred quid, and the online service sucks. It can take days to access funds while jumping through hoops, making repeated phone calls, and waiting for verification codes through the post! The online service might work for a bit only then to stop working shortly afterwards, requiring more hoops to be jumped, more phone calls and more waiting for more verification codes. It’s littered with glitches, unreliable and frustrating. ‘A terrible shame. The App is just as bad. Worked for an hour. Now doesn’t work. If I am being honest I leave a token amount of money with the Newbury to preserve the jobs of their staff now. A bit like supporting a charity. Preserving a rare breed. Real people staffing branches on the high street, but my patience is wearing thin.
