Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 294 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers reported significant dissatisfaction with pricing, frequently encountering hidden fees, unexpected additional costs, and pressure to purchase extra insurance or large security deposits. These often resulted in final prices far exceeding initial quotes, sometimes doubling or tripling the original reservation cost. Reviewers also faced service issues, including being denied reserved vehicles, dealing with unhelpful staff, and experiencing unexpected credit card charges. The off-site locations, often requiring shuttles, were a common point of frustration for many. However, some customers noted positive interactions with staff, describing them as transparent, helpful, and friendly. A few also found rental costs lower than competitors, appreciating that extra services were not pushed.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE

I booked NU Car Rental Denver CO with Priceline. I booked a rental from 7/17/26 -7/26/26 from the Denver airport and had a full sized SUV such as a Ford Expedition confirmed. Upon arrival at NU Car Rentals, I was told that our reservation was for a Chevrolet Traverse, which is a substantially smaller vehicle. I expressed that the Traverse was not large enough for three adults and two teenagers and the accompanying luggage for a nine day trip. NU Car Rentals claimed that Priceline misrepresented the vehicle that I reserved and could only get a larger vehicle if I was willing to pay an additional $300 per day. After calling other rental places in the area & nothing was available, I was forced to accept the additional charges because my family was exhausted from spending the day traveling. The original car rental was supposed to cost $639.98 (which I had already paid). NU Car Rental gave me a Chevrolet Tahoe (which is still smaller than the Ford Expedition) and charged me an additional $2803.77, which brought my 9 day rental to a total of $3443.75. NU Car Rental took advantage of my situation and charged me a ridiculous amount for a vehicle that was still smaller than what I reserved through Priceline.

On top of this horrible experience the Manager was disrespectful, arrogant, & completely unhelpful. He showed no interest in resolving the problem he was more concerned with making sure we were charged an extra $300 a day. Customer service should be a priority & this was not the case. I WOULD NOT recommend renting from NU Car Rental Denver CO

very bad experience . rented a car for 4 days in Florida. at their offsite location - i end up in a like "telephone booth" where i talk virtual with an agent- to whom i repeatedly decline PDW additional insurance.I was told he will not release the keys for the car unless- i got that insurance at 29.99/day. was 9.30 pm and either i take that ins or loose my accommodation for the night. i DEFINITELY DO NOT recommend this Nu car in Fort Lauderdale

AVOID

I booked and fully pre-paid for my vehicle at the Denver Airport location through Priceline. At the counter, I explicitly denied all additional insurance coverage. Despite this, Nü Car Rentals added insurance charges to my final bill anyway. When I noticed the unauthorized fees and disputed them, management denied my refund. They claimed that because I "signed" the electronic keypad at the counter, I agreed to the charges. The agent rushed me through the signature process without showing me the itemized breakdown of what I was signing. This is a highly deceptive business practice designed to slip hidden fees past customers who have already paid. Avoid this off-site location and book with a reputable company instead.

SCAM CHARGES

SCAM CHARGES. DON'T RENT!!!

HORRIBLE experience. They charged me an "incidental fee" for SMOKING and stated there were ashes in the car. RIDICULOUS because 1. I DON'T SMOKE AT ALL. 2. the car would've reeked of smoke and it did NOT. I tried emailing to explain this and they simply would not budge, causing me to open a dispute with my credit card company. DON'T rent from here. Prices are cheap for a reason, because clearly they will rack up incidental charges for fabricated reasons. I will never rent from them again and surely be telling everyone locally the same.

You can CLEARLY see in their video they sent me it's DIRT AND DUST AND GRAVEL. INSANE COMPANY

Bad customer service

Bad customer service. Totally a scam. Rude service. I see why 90% of people voice to stay clear of this place. Learned my lesson. Please don’t give these scam artists any of your service. Was told that we had to get the CDW and it wasn’t optional. Rep told me that we could wave it, which didn’t make any sense. They reviewed the recording and said that none of it was ever stated. Called corporate office to solve this dispute and was laughed at on the phone by one of the representatives. Rep told me to resolve any of this dispute I will have to go to the Denver office. I am from Houston. That means I will have to fly back to Denver to talk to the manager. When I explained that they said, that’s what I have to do. but when I was in Denver, they explained to me they will call me within the week so tell me how that makes sense. Very unprofessional. Not sure how these representatives are trained, but someone needs to learn professionalism.

Major issue with Car Rental and Customer Service

My experience with this rental company was extremely disappointing from start to finish.

The problems began at the airport. The shuttle, which was supposed to arrive every 20 minutes, never showed up. After waiting 40 minutes at 8:45 p.m., I had no choice but to take a taxi, which cost me $30.00 USD just to get to the rental location down the street.

When I arrived to pick up the vehicle, the customer service representative repeatedly challenged my collision coverage, even though I had all of my rental insurance documentation printed and clearly showing I was covered. He insisted my insurance had to specify an exact dollar amount for collision coverage and spent over 40 minutes pressuring me to purchase their insurance for an additional $600.00 USD. My husband even logged into our insurance account and sent screenshots confirming I was covered. Although the documentation still didn't state a specific dollar amount, it clearly showed I had collision coverage. Only after a lengthy argument did the representative finally allow me to take the vehicle without purchasing their insurance.

Unfortunately, the problems didn't end there. On the second day of my rental, the low tire pressure warning came on. I added air and monitored it, but the following day the pressure had dropped another 10 PSI. I took the vehicle to a mechanic, who found a nail in the tire. Even more concerning, the mechanic informed me that the tire's tread was so worn that it could not legally be repaired and had to be replaced.
When I contacted NU, I was told I could either pay for a new tire myself and seek reimbursement later or wait a couple of days for them to exchange the vehicle. Neither option was reasonable while I was on vacation, so I paid for the new tire out of pocket.

On the fourth day, the vehicle displayed a "Check Oil and Filter" warning. At that point, I had completely lost confidence in the safety and maintenance of the vehicle. I called NU, and they immediately exchanged the car, which only reinforced my belief that the original vehicle should never have been rented out in the first place.

I requested compensation for the half day I lost sitting at the mechanic while the tire was replaced. Their only offer was to allow me to return the replacement vehicle with a half tank of gas instead of a full tank. Considering the inconvenience, safety concerns, unexpected expenses, and lost vacation time, this was nowhere near adequate compensation.

This rental significantly impacted our trip. Poor vehicle maintenance, unsafe tires, excessive pressure to purchase unnecessary insurance, and inadequate customer service made this one of the worst rental experiences I have ever had. I would not rent from this company again.

SCAM!!!

SCAM!!!
My experience with this company has been absolutely terrible. They charged me the security deposit, but when the time came to return it, the excuses, delays, and evasive answers began. After numerous complaints, I still haven't recovered the money that is rightfully mine.
Dealing with their customer service is infuriating, and the whole situation leaves you feeling completely helpless. Don't rent from them. They are scammers.

Avoid Nu Car Rental San Diego – Predatory Fees and Terrible Service!

Renting from Nu Car Rental through Expedia was easily the worst car rental experience I have ever had. They lure you in with the lowest upfront price, but it is a complete trap.
When I arrived, the service was painfully slow. I had to wait over 20 minutes just for them to "clean and refuel" the car. When I finally got the keys, the car wasn't even clean, and the gas was only at 5/8 of a tank—not full. To make matters worse, the low tire pressure warning light came on immediately, but I didn't have time to wait around for them to fix it.
Throughout the counter process, the staff aggressively pushed hard-sell tactics for extra insurance and prepay fuel, which I declined. Even though I returned the car with the correct fuel level, they managed to invent reasons to penalize me on the back end, sticking me with a $150 low tire pressure fee and a $175 cleaning fee.
In the end, these hidden, arbitrary fees made this "cheap" rental cost twice as much as a reputable agency like Budget. Save yourself the headache, avoid the predatory business practices, and rent from a trustworthy company instead.

Worst experience ever.

Worst experience ever.
Do not book here. Go somewhere else
It is set up so that no matter the clients' degree of preparedness, insurance, top they over charge the tolls credit card and pre-paid status, the client will be charged hundreds of dollars more for in stealth fees.
In addition, a deposit of $2000 is required unless the client pays a non-refundable fee.

They do not care if the client leaves without their reserved car. They just smile through the repeated gouging attempts.

Worst experience ever. If you don’t really. Care about spend money pockets and don’t mind to be ripped off, then go there.

$2,000 Deposit?? FrEE, FrEE, FrEE!!!

Great initial cost. I expected some upsells at the counter, but after the $50 for the deposit of $500... then it was $90 for unlimited miles.. Imagine renting a car in Florida for a week and only have 600miles? One trip to Orlando and back to Miami and you are already at 500miles....I used the virtual assistant since the lines were long...VA told me after I stopped him that there may be potential fees which add up to $385.. so then I did the math and added my initial $141.. So now I am at $526 for a car that was supposed to be $141... I cancelled, drove over to Hertz, got a similar car for under $300 out the door. I do not recommend at all.

A totally shady company

A totally shady company. I’ll never go near them again. They almost ruined my trip with my family. I cursed them out and left, then rented a car from Enterprise. I’d booked the car through Priceline from this so-called company in Fort Lauderdale. But the company was totally shady—even though I had full coverage insurance from Progressive, they insisted on selling me insurance for $330 When I refused, they wouldn’t give me the car.

Shameful Treatment After a Canceled Flight

We rented a car for nearly a full week, but our flight was canceled after we spent almost seven hours waiting on the tarmac because of mechanical problems and weather-related delays. We were unable to find a reasonable alternative flight.

We notified the rental company immediately and asked whether it would refund at least a portion of the weekly charge or provide a future credit. It refused to offer any accommodation, charged us the full amount for the entire week, and would not even consider issuing a credit.

Retaining the full weekly rental price under these circumstances, without any apparent consideration of the company’s actual loss, feels grossly unfair and excessive, regardless of whether the reservation included nonrefundable language.

This was a deeply disappointing and shameful way to treat a customer dealing with circumstances entirely beyond their control.

If I could give a 0

If I could give a 0, I would. The front desk process is extremely slow. My car had a crack in the windshield, and a faulty sensor. They charged me 2x for the reservation. Will never use them again.

Do NOT rent from this company

Do NOT rent from this company ! Age discrimination. GSP South Carolina
I did not see ANYTHING on their website nor in the contract that describes a surcharge for Senior Citizen Drivers. This popped up on the bill receipt I received at the location. The clerk then states to me when I complained ..." Do you not want the car ? " I'm out at an off-airport stop and she thinks I am going to take an UBER to Greenville or back to the airport?
