Dubious trading methods

Their adherence to trading standards is dubious. I tested an item working on view day. Won the bid the following day. Collected 2 days later with no opportunity to check it. Got back to base, tested but it didn't work. £120 invoice on an £85 hammer price. Policy is sold as seen but clearly it was not as seen with no facility to check. Suspect label swapped from other similar items by potential purchasers (just a suggestion, not an accusation). Peacocks lied that they had checked cctv with no issues - their response time did not give them time to check hours of cctv. Ultimately they refunded the money but cancelled my membership despite the issue being their responsibility, failing to supply as seen or providing the facility to check.
Just noticed their response to another complaint:
"Our one-off £10 registration fee covers a lifetime account to buy and sell at our salerooms in Bedford, St Neots and Leamington Spa. By charging for registrations, we are able to keep our buyer’s premium down to one of the lowest rates available." ....
Not true. I had paid £10 and it certainly hasn't covered a lifetime account. They cancelled with no refund despite it not being my fault.
Aggressive and wrong customer service.
On the positive, their cafe is superb

At the time of your complaint, we looked into the accusation and clearly found that no items had been swapped. As a goodwill gesture, we agreed to provide a refund and close your account. We believe this to be a very reasonable resolution.

Don’t bother selling on this site

Sold a few items - one was incorrectly listed even though I had written the description - just got my invoice received less than half the hammer price . Absolutely not worth selling at this auction unless selling total crap selling anything decent isn’t worth their expensive fees - actually paid for one item to be sold as they charge more on commission than it sold for !

We are sorry that you have drawn these conclusions, we are always happy to give complimentary valuation advice prior to sale. As a vendor you may also put an agreed reserve figure on any item entered for sale. https://www.peacockauction.co.uk/valuationservice/
Nevertheless we are sorry your experience did not meet your expectations.

Had an item that was wrongly catalogued due to the seller giving false description of the item being sold.
W&H Peacock and their wonderful staff went out of their way to rectify the problem that had arose.
I have dealt with this company on a few occasions and they have always been extremely polite and helpful. My regards go to all the staff that helped with the problem that arose . A refund has been promised and I look forward to dealing with them again should I need a very good bargain.

Greedy

Requested a condition report on an item I was interested in, just a few hours after the catalogue was issued. Got nothing. So made a 2 hour round trip to inspect the item. Went to register and they wanted £10 for me to fill in a form for them to type in to their computer. This despite me having bought from them before.

I spend £20-30k each year at auctions all around the country. I would expect to pay an admission fee at a prestigious London art auction, but I have never been asked for one for a general sale at a provincial auction. I would have bid up to 3 times what the item sold for and would also have bid on another item. As it was, it would have been cheaper to stand in the saleroom but bid on my phone via the saleroom. But I preferred on principle to just drive away. Their loss (and the vendor's).

We’re sorry that you did not respond to your condition report request in a timely manner. The viewing days for our weekly sales can be particularly busy, however we always aim to reply to requests by the end of the day. Our apologies if this did not happen in this instance.

Our one-off £10 registration fee covers a lifetime account to buy and sell at our salerooms in Bedford, St Neots and Leamington Spa. By charging for registrations, we are able to keep our buyer’s premium down to one of the lowest rates available.

Unfair Treatment After a Single Honest Mistake — Ended Up Closing My Account

I’ve bought a lot of items from this auctioneer in the past without any issues — overall, not bad at all. But in one final auction, I accidentally placed a bid on a really expensive laptop. I realized it right after and explained the situation honestly. It wasn’t some shady move — paying for it would’ve been like buying it at full retail price.

Still, they reacted pretty harshly and blocked my account. Now, even when I try to bid in auctions from other auctioneers on i-bidder, I need approval first. That’s really frustrating and just doesn’t feel fair, especially after being a solid buyer for so long.

Today, I asked i-bidder to close my account.

I have bought items from Peacocks for many years and have always been treated in a professional and courteous manner.
Service is excellent even through i-bidder.

I love walking the site searching for that special 'something' you find by accident.
The auction house is split into various sections which makes it easier to find something specific if that is what draws you in.
Obviously, the lots are dependent on what people wish to part with.
There are usually lots from bankruptcies to swell the number.
Although my posting was a year ago and I visit very so often, I visited again last Friday and it was the same experience.

Bedford NFU ladies visit to Peacocks…

We are a group of local Bedfordshire ladies from the farming community that meet one a month for talks.and visits.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of being welcomed bt Harry and Lindsey to the Bedford site. We had the most informative day; we were shown around the whole site and enjoyed finding out about the various up and coming items for auction. We spent a wonderful hour in the antiques room where we did a great quiz on valuations and providence. Suffice to say none of us will be appearing as experts on Antiques Roadshow any time soon!

We were given so much information about the processes involved, the huge range of stuff that comes up for auction and many lovely anecdotes from the profession. We then had a great lunch in the lively brightly lit cafe followed by delicious cake.

It was a fantastic day and all 35 of us want to send our heartfelt thanks to both Lindsey and Harry for their professionalism, sense of humour and specialist knowledge.

Clearly TrustPilot is well respected

This company can improve by showing a bit more respect for their customers and some consideration around Easter bank holiday as responses will be delayed.
I had arranged to travel the Bedford site from Reading tomorrow and I was told today it was too late for me to pick it up ..... 2 working days after the auction, so they have put it back in the next auction.

Thankyou W&H Peacock for a most inconsiderate and displeasurable experience with your company over this period of religeous celebration.
UPDATE
Clearly TrustPilot is respected as i got an immediate response from W&H Peacock who have resolved the situation. faith restored!

Bad reflection on the owners

Mr. B needs to train his staff not to come across in-different when dealing face to face with customers. With the exception of the kind gentleman fork truck driver the all the other staff I encountered yesterday were just rude and I couldn’t wait to get out of the place.

Absolutely desecration

Absolutely desecration! Won a lot, pay for it and it had one missing item, The manager was very rude and offered me money back with ending by blocked me for any further biding without having any fault!
Avoid biding here at any cost, most items are faulty with hidden damage or missing parts plus they don’t care about customer. Thanks

We are surprised at your review - every indication was that your issue had already been resolved amicably. Nevertheless we are sorry your experience did not meet your expectations.

Your review raises an important point that all bidders need to be aware of. All of our sales are conducted on a ‘Sold as Seen’ basis and the onus is on the purchaser to inspect the pieces they would like to buy.

I purchased at W H Peacocks 2 lots the 1st February, I requested a pack and send on the 2nd of Feb, as we had not received any email advising so we requested pack and send on the 3rd twice and on the morning of the 4th. By 12 am on the 4th they had cancelled my bids telling that we had not paid. We purchase many auction items and have never been treated as badly as this. Of course they will come out with some rubbish as they have with others leaving negative reviews but over 60% of their clients cant be wrong.

THE REPLY TO MY REVIEW WAS WHAT I EXPECTED, YOU NEVER TAKE RESPONCABILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS YOU ONLY BLAME YOUR CUSTOMERS. YOU CANCELLED THE SALE 48 HOURS AFTER THE SALE THAT WAS ON THE 1ST OF FEBRUARY AND YOU CANCELLED ON THE 4th AND YOU NEVER PHONED. 60% OF YOUR CUSTOMERS CANT BE WRONG

This review is factually incorrect. We have a recording of the phone conversation as well as emails which do not match the dates you have given. The third-party online bidding provider can verify that the sale was not cancelled when you claim. Readers of this review will have to draw their own conclusions.

Our phone records and emails don’t seem to match the account you have given.

We sent three email reminders which very clearly explained that all lots have to be paid for by the end of the Tuesday following the auction. We rang you up on Tuesday 4th and informed you that Wednesday lunchtime was the absolute latest for payment. You first requested shipping at 5.30pm on Tuesday which we replied to first thing on Wednesday morning (we then responded to your following email within 3 minutes of receiving it). As the extended deadline was still missed despite our shipping department also stressing the need for prompt payment, the sale was cancelled and the online bidding platform was informed after 3pm on Wednesday 5th.

We do not think it unreasonable to require payment for purchases within 72 hours of the auction.

We sell over 5,000 lots per week across our three branches and because of this quick turnaround cannot store purchases beyond the deadline clearly stated in our sale details.

Found Peacocks auctioneer in Bedford a few months ago and since then, attend regularly. With the vast purpose built multi hall facility comes an excellent cafe over looking the halls. The food is delicious and their staff are super efficient and friendly - would highly recommend a visit. Every regular Saturday, there is a buzz of energy and enthusiasm with a huge range of lots in the four parallel auctions which start at 10.00am

Very disappointed

Spent over a grand in 4 weeks and would continue to do so - Charged £20 to send a dash cam and the week after £40 to send 5kg of stuff in a small parcel! Costs £6.41 to send 20kg via DPD and I'm charged £40 because of a box, label and their 'time'... I have put up with their non description on items and being sent broken items and items with missing parts and nothing is ever listed! I live miles away and cant view the items! I expect a transparent service ..Will not use this company again

We're sorry you felt the need to leave this review. Our postage and packaging department will have provided you with a quotation for packaging and delivery of the items you purchased based upon the size and weight of the goods. With larger goods we are constrained by the restrictions of our delivery provider and we would agree that there are more cost effective means of arranging collection. It was entirely your choice whether to utilise our service or arrange your own courier.
However, your complaint raises a good point about the importance of prospective buyers viewing the sale in person before they bid. Our auctions include a mixture of end-of-line, surplus and returned stock as well as privately consigned lots. We offer 12 hours of viewing late into the evening specifically to allow the public to inspect goods they plan to buy. We also offer a condition report service. Unfortunately you chose not to take advantage of either opportunity. We do not recommend bidding ‘blind’ and refer you to the conditions of sale to which you agreed prior to bidding online:

1. Purchasers will be deemed:
a) To have inspected their lots prior to the sale; and
b) To have accepted that lots are sold with all faults and imperfections specifically mentioned or not irrespective of whether they bid in person, by commission, online or through an agent.
