Great experience

Both of my children have done an immersion with Projects Abroad as a 16 year old (Nepal medicine in 2024 and Cambodia in 2026). They saw so much and learnt a great deal. We would highly recommend Projects Abroad. Great thing to do!!

Incredible experience for teens

Our 16 year old son joined the Cambodia community /childcare program for teens in January. Projects Abroad provided such great guidance, advice and support before the trip to help us feel comfortable with the decision. Then when we reached out in the first few days as he was settling in, they could not have been more responsive and kind. Our son knew no one, hasn’t travelled independently before and could not have had a better experience. The volunteering in the school was a very positive and fun experience, helped the kids all get to know eachother, the extra tours etc were great, he made lovely friends. We could not recommend this experience more, it was well priced, extremely well organised and supported in the lead up and then locally on the trip. Great self development for young people. our son wanted it to keep going!

We’re thrilled to hear that your son had such a positive and rewarding experience on our Cambodia Community and Childcare program. It’s especially reassuring to know that the guidance and support before departure, as well as our team’s responsiveness once he arrived, helped put you at ease. We’re delighted he enjoyed the school placement, activities, and friendships, and that the experience supported his personal development.

A valuable experience

My son had a very rewarding experience with Projects Abroad saying the program was very well organised from beginning to end. He felt safe & supported, enjoying every aspect of the day and evening programs. He learnt so much from his trip that he would not have been able to from a classroom at school. The friendships he made with likeminded teenagers from other cities & countries made his experience invaluable.

We truly appreciate your kind words and are so pleased the program had such a positive impact on him.

The projects abroad team are so beyond exceptional

2 weeks in a school in Nanyuki, Kenya

The projects abroad team are so welcoming, enthusiastic and helpful both prior departure and upon arrival in Kenya. They assisted me with all questions and changes to my program with willingness and efficiency. The team planned activities to immense you in the Kenyan culture after school and provided you with options for what to do on the weekend. The program is so beautiful, rewarding and eye opening. The school welcomes you with wide arms and everyone is willing to share information and stories with you. It makes you feel like you can help in such a short time! The children always have a smile and just want to be in your company. If you want to volunteer choose projects abroad!!

It was a wonderful experience

I stayed in Vietnam for one week. The staff and the host family were incredibly warm and welcoming. I believe that even high school students or people visiting a foreign country for the first time can participate in the activities with peace of mind. When I take part in international training or volunteer programs again in the future, I would definitely like to use this organization again.

Ready to go Back!

I was incredibly impressed by Projects Abroad. The conservation work that they are doing is so interesting and the work with the mangroves is doing so many wonders for the local area. I felt like it was structured really well with a balance of planned activities and time where we could enjoy free time by being at the beach or hanging out by the pool.

Nepal High School Medical Trip for 2 Weeks

Everything about this trip was very insightful. I had a wonderful time experiencing a new culture and learning about the medical field. This trip has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the field of medicine that interests me the most, confirming that the field I initially wanted to pursue is one I am willing to undertake and capable of handling.
I would definitely recommend going on this trip :)!

Gap year program in Vietnam and Cambodia, a great experience for our 18 year old

Our son, age 18, went to Vietnam (4 weeks) and Cambodia (3 weeks) with the Projects Abroad Gap Year Program in Fall 2025, for part of his gap year between high school and college. As a parent, I was very impressed and reassured by how quickly and clearly the Projects Abroad staff (specifically Riyaad Herman, who also met with us by zoom) responded to my (many) questions before the trip. The myprojectsabroad.com interface was very thorough and helpful with regards to travel arrangements, itinerary, etc etc. As for the trip itself, it was a small group, he had an incredible time and raved about not just the food, the learning, and experiences, but also the in-country guide Vinh (for Vietnam) and how much he learned about history, politics etc which are very interesting to him. I had the sense that the participants had a pretty good balance between organized activities but also had a chance to be on their own in some of the days and evenings, which I think was good for learning about international travel and independence. From his description and photos I think the accommodations were above par as well. He also was glad he added the Cambodia portion: Cambodia was more different from Vietnam than he expected and thinking about what and why that is led to some interesting insights. He loved the food, the beaches, Angor Wat, and pretty much every experience in both countries. I would really recommend this gap year program, I just wish they offered it for my age group....

Dear Beth,

Thank you so much for sharing Ruben’s experience in Vietnam and Cambodia. We’re delighted to hear that he had an incredible experience abroad and that the program supported the kind of learning, independence, and cultural exploration you were hoping for. We’re thrilled that Ruben enjoyed the mix of structured activities and free time. That balance is something we design very intentionally for this program so participants can grow their confidence as independent travelers while still feeling fully supported. Thank you again for your kind recommendation. We’ll be sure to share your comments with the teams in Vietnam and Cambodia — they’ll be delighted to hear Ruben’s experience made such an impact.

And as for your final point — while this particular Gap program is tailored to younger participants, we do offer a wide range of volunteer and travel opportunities for all ages. We’d be more than happy to help you explore options if you’re ever interested!

Volunteering in Galapagos (for older folk)

My two weeks of volunteering on the Older Person's Conservation and Community project in the Galapagos wasn't long enough! No sooner have you started to find your way around and feel like you're doing something useful, than you have to leave!

That said, it was a well organised project and although we had to work quite hard, we did also get the opportunity to see some wonderful wildlife and experience working with members of the good-natured San Cristobal community.

It was a great experience, but we did still have to pay quite a lot for the privilege.

What made my experience truly great was…The people and the cultural impact

What made my experience truly great was the combination of meaningful professional work, cultural immersion, and strong support throughout the entire journey. Projects Abroad did an excellent job creating a placement that genuinely aligned with my interests and career goals, and I appreciated how intentional they were about making sure volunteers feel safe, informed, and valued.

The company is doing very well in facilitating real impact placements rather than surface-level volunteer tasks. I felt trusted with substantial responsibilities at my internship, and the staff at the firm were welcoming, supportive, and invested in helping me learn. Projects Abroad also did a great job with logistics and communication — from the pre-departure guidance to airport pickup, accommodation, and check-in messages, I always felt guided and cared for.

The balance between structured support and personal independence made this experience empowering, exciting, and unforgettable. I left feeling more confident, connected, and inspired.

Learn from experiences

I'm Fabrizio, Francesco’s father, who had a two months volunteer experience in Kenya.
Francesco has returned home after spending two months in Kenya with Projects Abroad. He took part in the environmental conservation project at the Soysambu reserve and then in the child care project in Nanyuki. According to him, both experiences were wonderful and very different from each other.
The one that left the strongest impression on him was the work with the children, he had a lot of fun with them during school hours, playing math games and doing lots of drawings. He came back home with an endless number of notes and drawings, which are now hanging on his bedroom wall.
What stayed with him the most are the children’s smiles. At the end of the school term, he also took part in classroom renovation activities. He didn’t miss out on anything, including two safaris and several excursions.
Francesco went to Kenya because he needed a major change in his life. He’s only 17, but he left school because he kept having anxiety attacks every time he entered the classroom and couldn’t handle oral tests or written exams. The Italian school system is one of the most stressful in the world for teenagers, and at the same time, it has never been modernized, it’s still the same as it was in my day, and I’m 56. I don’t understand why the Italian school system hasn’t adapted to modern society.
When he came back, after just two months, I saw a new Francesco: motivated, eager to take initiative, and ready to engage with the working world. I always hope that one day he’ll go back to studying, but I don’t know if that will ever happen.
Francesco will definitely set off for another experience at the beginning of next year, and I believe it will be with Projects Abroad again.
He met many people, both from Projects Abroad staff and among the volunteers and locals, from whom he learned a great deal. He’s realized that he’s genuinely interested in helping others.

Volunteering as a student nurse in Tanzania

My experience volunteering on the project aboard Tanzania was great. My host family, accommodation and other volunteers there created great company both during weekday and weekend activities. I enjoyed getting to know people from different backgrounds and cultures.

As a healthcare volunteer, I gained invaluable insights from working in the hospital. I was exposed to a variety of clinical settings and learned not only from the healthcare professionals but also from the patients themselves. While the language barrier posed some initial challenges, making the effort to communicate helped me grow in both understanding and confidence.

For future medical or healthcare volunteers, I’d recommend bringing two to three pairs of scrubs. Depending on your placement—particularly if you're involved in surgical areas—it’s essential to have an extra, unworn set ready for use.
