The location being right next to the airport makes this rent a car company very convenient. We compared like 10 different companies, since we needed a big car for a group of 5 people, and they had by... See more

Easy to book, easy to find the agency in Reykjavik when we have picked the car up and easy and very quick the return at the airport.
The personnel was very kind and helpful.

The rental was made through Firefly, but handled through Herzz. However, the car had more defects than in the pickup form. We have all photographed and reported, but wanted to charge us for the damage after 5 minutes drive. Upon delivery, the employees went to look for exactly two three places that you already knew that there was something and wanted to attach this to us as well. Attention. No rent by Hertz. Fraudsters and rip-off artists. An additional insurance eich not useful, because you have to deposit a huge deposit and then have to collect the money again.

I can not recommend this car rental company and would advise people to steer clear. The only positive was the price, and you know what they say: you get what you pay for. Every customer there was unhappy. For context, we rented the last week of December 2022 and it was cold and snowy. This was our experience: First, they were not prepared to take our family of 5 to the car rental location when we arrived, so only 2 of us could go. Second, they surprised us with a requirement of a 250,000 krona hold on our credit card unless we bought their upgraded insurance. Third, their website stated the car we rented could hold 5 people and 5 pieces of luggage, but when we drove the 20 minutes back to the airport, we found it only fit 3 pieces of luggage. 4 if you want the entire back window blocked. If they had been prepared and taken our family and luggage to the rental car location, we would have known we couldn’t fit and gotten a different vehicle. However, we had reservations at the blue lagoon, and they already wasted 40 minutes of our time, so we made the executive decision to suck it up and hold suitcases on our laps for our weeklong trip around the island. Fourth, they gave us no instructions or information about the vehicle we rented. My husband drives a manual car, but we had to Google how to put it in reverse. The headlights were manual but we haven’t dealt with manual headlights in over 15 years. At the blue lagoon, the headlights were left on. The battery died, but there were people at the blue lagoon happy to give us a jump - if only the car lock mechanism had not been frozen. Every staff person we asked at the blue lagoon never heard of car lock mechanisms locking and in 30+ years of living in Minnesota we never had that happen to us. So we had no other option but to call them for roadside assistance. Up to this point, I was honestly fine. International travel can be difficult and stuff happens. However, the customer service we received when calling for help was unforgivable. We had my elderly mother with us and we were REPEATEDLY LIED to, HUNG UP on, and stranded for over 2 hours. When help did arrive, we were yelled at, blamed, and talked to very rudely. We are happy to take some, even most, of the blame, but not 100%. We were charged 65,000 krona for them to drive 18km to unfreeze the lock. We were happy to pay a fee since it was partly our fault, but it was 20+ degrees and they wanted to blame the weather and us when they did not properly care for their vehicle or provide any information about it to us. Zero accountability. Fifth, we had to drop off our family at the airport and then go to the car rental place because, again, they were unable to transport a family of 5. If you’d like to avoid an experience like this, avoid this car rental company. Stick with one at the airport.

Definitely one of the smoothest experiences with a car rental. They are super friendly and always replying to any of your questions via email prior your trip. Upon collecting the car, the staff was very kind, explained everything clearly and quickly, they also give helpful information and tips. Car was flawless. Thank you Reykjavik Cars!
These greedy officious mofos charged me a $40 fee to pay an $11 tunnel charge that I couldn't get my phone to pay.
Avoid this company unless you like getting ripped off.

Very good service from Reykjavik Cars. Collecting and handing in the car went very smooth (at Blue car rental). Our rented car was not available anymore, but we got an upgrade (from Aygo to Picanto) with no problems.
They are very quick with their contact. If you have questions they will answer them quickly. You get the damage report on pickup instantly, the damage report after dropping it off we got it before we were through security so also very quick.
Be aware that blue car rental is a middleman between you and Blue car rental (in our case). The price difference is in the fact that there is only a basis insurance with Reykjavik cars, and with Blue car rental you get everything. We didn't booked any insurance and got no damage (so no extra fees)
We booked through Reykjavik Cars and ended up with Lava cars.
It was overall a good experience, but with room for improvements:
1) we specifically asked what was not included in the insurance (platinum - zero risk) and it turned out towing was not included, but nobody mentioned this to us. Luckily we didnt need it.
2) Everytime we needed to contact them including drop off, they were understaffed. Several times on the phone we were told "im the only one here, so you will have to wait" and many times they didnt even pick up
3) Some staff didnt speak english well, and another staff was clearly annoyed with us.
4) we left the car with a quarter tank fuller than when we got it, but did not get reimbursed for this.
I would recommend them, however, but i hope they take it seriously and will fix these issues.
We booked through Reykjavik cars as they were by far the cheapest option for our 3 day trip. After reading the reviews we were very dubious but couldn't afford any of the other companies.
We arrived at the airport and got the free shuttle to Reykjavik cars only to find they didn't exist... we spoke to the people at Blue car who pointed out that at the bottom of the booking confirmation there is a logo of the company who we were actually hiring the car from as Reykjavik cars is just a middle man company.
We actually rented from rent.is and were picked up from the terminal reception. We had a great experience with rent.is, we had taken out the full insurance package which I would recommend doing as it meant we didn't have to pay any excess for any damage (this meant the company were very relaxed about windscreen chips/ dints/scratches and I have read many reviews in which people had to pay silly money for the slightest damage). The only thing no one is covered for is wind damage so hold on to your car doors!!
All in all I would use Reykjavik cars again but this time check the booking confirmation to see who I am actually renting from!
Despite having confirmed and paid the deposit for our booking in January this year (our original booking in August 2020 had to be rearranged due to Covid), we have today received an email 4-days prior to us arriving in Iceland to say there are no vehicles available.
We have only just found out they are an intermediary company who rely on others to provide their vehicles. In our case, Fara Auto was to provide the car but have stated ‘due to shipment issues’ no new vehicle have arrived. I don’t see how this can be true as the vehicle we had booked was 2018 reg so should be on site.
Our whole trip has been planned around the use of a car as my wife, 3-year old child and I had hoped to tour Iceland. Now, we are frantically looking for another hire vehicle but with only 4-days to our holiday, the cost is 5x what we would have originally paid!
This last-minute cancellation from Reykjavik Cars has thrown all of our plans into chaos. We regularly hire vehicles on our holidays but this is the first time where a paid booking hasn’t been honoured.
To make matters worse, the company refused to refund our original booking when Covid hit and instead only gave us the option to rebook within a year or lose our deposit. You can imagine our frustration and anger when they emailed us to say as there is no vehicle, they would now refund us our deposit despite holding onto it for almost 2 years. Please stay away from this company! I would give zero stars if I could.
I had a good experience with Reykjavík Cars in June 2019. Had a totally pre-paid car booking VADS2126. All went well, we had an excellent trip with our Duster for a week.
So, when we planned our new trip to Iceland in 2020, whe didn't think too much and chose Reykjavík Cars again. In February 2020 we've made a 15% payment 21059 ISK to Reykjavík Cars and 85% payment 119331 ISK to Lava CarRental - manager from Rekjavik Cars sent us a direct link to make a full payment. Our booking is VADS5304.
Then all this covid situation started going on. Our trip and booking were from June 24th till July 5th. There were no flights from Russia, borders were totally closed. As they are even now, in August.
Reykjavik Cars returned us all our money . Thats very nice of you due to all this complicated situation, it took some time, but all is good now. Hope next summer will be more kind to travellers. Already miss Iceland so much! We look only towards your services in Iceland!
We got another car than expected, but it was an ok change.
Not easy to find them in the airport, because there were no shuttelbus though they wrote us several times the last hours before landing - the office didn't know it would only drive in the afternoon!
We tried to find the office, and on our walk, we went in and asked at "Blue rental" and they actually took care of the rental of reykjavik cars! Maybe it should be more clear, that you shall pick up at Blue!
Blue rental service was very good and the car was fine, but to call it new when it was past 100000 kilometers...
We would rent direct through Blue next time!
I'am very dissapointed by this company as I supposed it was a big and serious company in Iceland.
We live an unprecedented situation with Covid-19, all flights are canceled, countries are closing their borders, you can't reach Iceland in any way and this company tries to make the most profit of this situation based on their terms.
Every big car hire company has given refund and helped the situation and costumers in every way.
It's not the amount of the deposit, it is the way you treat your costumers in such difficult situations and the company prefers 55euros deposit instead of satisfied costumer with a next year booking.
It is not recommended.
Very very bad customer service!
When you try to address a problem or to get help, they just get angry and won't even bother to try and solve the problem.
Stay away! They are highly unreliable and they will try to steal your money.
DO NOT USE! Substituted the car I ordered for a cheaper one and also replaced it with a petrol rather than the more economical diesel I had booked! The agent was very unhelpful and their customer service representative was uninterested and just tried to weasel out of the issue when I contacted them.
We booked a 4x4 Subaru Forester for a week and did not take any insurance, when asked the company employee to check the car, he replied that we can check it and its all good and return the car with full tank, we got to the car and had a quick look as it was very dark, windy and raining. Everything seemed ok and drove off, following day when try to close the door, realised that there is noise and difficult to shut the door, upon closer inspection saw the hing on the door has been broken and that we have received the car with a term they call it "wind blown damage" , this clause has been stated when one signs the contract that the insurance will cover it BUT in the car inspection list that shows all the conditions and what has been checked and ticked ok or not, there is NO mention of it so if you were to follow the list to inspect the car you will never check the status of the door hing. The rental company put the blame on us and presented us with a price list of repairs to individual parts and there is no mention of hing repair anywhere on this list either so they wanted to charge us to replace the complete door costing €1600. I found these people very dis honest, it was very strange when we were returning the car they specifically checked the door hing without us mentioning and when they were renting it out they didnt!!! Or perhas they have few cars with these details and they give them to customers whom have not taken out insurance so they can make them liable for damages. Please be careful and inspect and pass this on to your friends. We thought by renting a car from a local company we would receive an honest and descent service also helping the local economy instead of hiring from multinationals BUT this was not the case. Would love to hear if anyone else had any similar issues especially people who have not taken out insurances.
Excellent
I rented a car in july in this company and it was perfect.
Great job, good organisation.
Thanks a lot.
See you next time in Iceland.
