Despite the issues I’ve had to move the gas meter mainly down to a temp manager and miscommunication. We discovered that the pipework when building a kitchen extension were the old pipes and needed to be changed to plastic so more work than expected. The engineers Mikey and then Tom were absolute excellent chaps and their perm manager Peter Burrows was also really helpful and made up for the rocky road we started the journey on. Well done SGN.
I'm a pevious employee of SGN
I'm a pevious employee of SGN, I was looking into my SGN pension and what to do with it.
I had to contact the payroll department for information, they were useless, refusing to reply to my emails.
Exemplary
There are some workmen that I won't let near my property because of the first impressions they or their company give. No such problems with James and Adrian, who were assigned by SGN to connect my gas supply to the new external mains supply. Both James and Adrian were polite from the outset and their explanations clear and they gave me confidence that the mandatory work would be carried out proficiently and professionally and with the least disruption possible. This turned out to be the case, during a heatwave no less, so not ideal circumstances. I was not looking forward to this work being done, however I found the work and attitude of Adrian and James to be exemplary. Thanks very much!
Gas pipe replacement
While undertaking so diy I noticed my pipe wasn’t looking like it needed attention. I spoke to SGN and sent some pics and video to them. Response was superb from anll the team. Steve, Michael, Miles and Dan were just great. They arrived assessed the situation and sorted the problem fitting a rocket connection instead of a box.
Sorry didn’t get the name of the last guy. But a big thankyou to all the team! Superb service and friendly knowledgeable lads
Shocking lack of communication.
Shocking lack of communication. A workman knocked on our door and asked my husband if they can come in later and pull up our floorboards etc. I went to take a shower and discovered they'd already turned off the gas to all the properties. No warning whatsoever. The letter we received said they'd give 7 days notice for anything that would inconvenience us. We booked time off work this week, having no idea this was planned. If we were given adequate warning, we would've booked a different week off to relax. The foreman apologised and offered wine and a bit of cash, but it's not enough to make up for valuable time off work that has been ruined. Now they're digging up our driveway and from these reviews I don't expect it to be put back properly, guess we'll see though.
Update: they said they'd only be in our house for 30 mins. It's been nearly 2 hours and no sign of them being done. They've blocked our car in with their digger so we can't go out. They've dug up the path to our house with no warning. This is quickly becoming a complete nightmare that we never signed up for. Why our council chose SGN for this work is beyond me.
Second update: SGN now asking for more information about this review, probably so they can challenge it and take it down. The subcontractor this review is about is JB Utility Services. £75 compensation was paid to apologise for everything but I feel this was really insulting, so my review remains.
Brilliant service
A young man named Lewis Rowles fixed our gas problem with a complete professional attitude. He was also very polite young man. An asset to the company. Thank you!
Renewal of gas pipes
The team were very professional and hard working, we are very pleased with the time they finished the job in. We were told 1 to 2 weeks and was done in less than a week. The team working on site were- Chris Hine, James Gourley, Mark Connor, Alec Brown, Luk Earley, Ed Gribbon and supervised by Manager Wade Sharp. Thanks to everybody. 👍. Barry Carter. Resident of Suvretta House 35 Sutherland Avenue.
Poor Communication and No Consideration for Vulnerable Residents”
I’m extremely disappointed with the way SGN has handled works outside my property. For over a week now, they have left two large and deep holes directly beside my driveway, significantly restricting my access. Despite repeated requests and being told multiple times that the holes would be “filled in the next couple of days,” nothing has been done.
What makes this more frustrating is that every other property in my cul-de-sac has had their holes filled and tarmacked, and SGN teams continue to complete work for residents on nearby roads. I have explained to SGN that I am disabled, and politely asked for the holes to either be filled or at least covered so I can safely access my home. This request has been refused without any proper explanation or urgency.
This disregard for accessibility, safety, and basic communication is unacceptable. I expected more consideration—especially after being clear about my circumstances. I hope SGN takes this feedback seriously and addresses the issue immediately, not only for myself but for any other vulnerable residents affected by similar negligence.
22nd May 2025 - I want to acknowledge that SGN’s subcontractor manager has since visited me in person to apologise for the poor communication and the inconvenience caused by the delay. I appreciate this gesture and the effort to take accountability.
I hope this experience encourages SGN to improve communication and prioritise accessibility and safety more effectively in future projects — particularly for vulnerable residents.
Update
A man from the company came to our door last week and gave us a card to say that they would be calling first thing this morning to change our pipes. We rearranged some things to be in and also emptied the meter cupboard, cluttering up one of our rooms.
Nobody turned up, there was no communication. We tried to contact them in several of their recommended ways. They didn't respond on WhatsApp or Messenger. The foreman's phone number on the card was invalid.
We have no idea whether they are going to just turn up some time. They have set up in the area.
We had a very good response to this review, from the company.
We received a phone call asking for more details and apologising. The foreman of the local workforce knocked on our door and apologised and explained. He said that we would have plenty of notice when they did schedule work on our property.
We are very happy with the response.
Terrible communication
Terrible communication just received a letter to say they’re going to do work on the single track road that we live on and then find out it actually relates to a main road across the other side of Basingstoke from us. All the residents on the road were concerned that the robe was gonna be dug up and we would have no access to our homes. Is this the right way to share information
I’m a delivery driver
I’m a delivery driver. SGN closed the road in Bembridge, Isle of Wight and doesn’t let anyone through. The customers are not receiving their parcels, but the most horrible thing is the rudeness of the workers. The company communication skills are zero.

Called SGN this morning and an engineer called Andy McGuire arrived within the hour. He was great and put my mind to rest after testing for a gas leak. Thank you Andy

A huge thank you to the two wonderful men who came to fix our gas leak today. They were not only professional and efficient, but also kind, respectful, and reassuring throughout the entire process. We truly appreciate their hard work and care. Absolute stars!
if SGN arrive in your neighbourhood to…
if SGN arrive in your neighbourhood to replace gas pipes they wlll arrive with a big portacabin loo and several diggers and park it outside your door, I've had one outside my house for nearly 4 months. The works have long since finished. Spoke to SGN spokesperson who said there is no where to park their porta cabin until they are ready to move onto the next location. No notice came from Adur council who SGN say is responsible. In the meantime we've got lots of holes in the road with no work being done with two blokes wondering around (they leave at midday).
Utterly disgusting service…
Decided I needed a gas pipe replaced so we agreed date. Told me they'd do the work outside so only needed in for a few minutes to turn off boiler etc and again for a few minutes to turn back on. As it was being done on my birthday and we were going out we agreed to return around 15:00. Gas turned off at 10:00. When we returned at 15:05 it turns out they changed the plan and would route the new pipe through house, guys arrived at 16:05 but not the guy to complete the job, he eventually arrives around 16:30 but can't finish as SGN won't pay overtime but assures me another engineer will arrive an sort it out, guess what no one arrives leaving 2 people in their 70's without heat or hot water, 1 has a heart condition, the other has lung problems. Can't even contact them as they have all gone home at 17:00, what a despicable way to treat anyone, their excuses will no doubt be blaming the weather, short staff, poor communication etc etc. I can't say how I really feel as I'd probably get arrested
SGN have turned on private land without…
SGN have turned on private land without permission and are carrying out work despite not having an easement and you can't make this up blocked our access road by placing a toilet portacabin on it. SGN's attitude seems to be "if you don't like it, litigate".
Guardian Angel
After I had rung SGN for assistance and followed the recommended instructions in the first instance.
The SGN engineer was very prompt following my request. He immediately took charge of the situation and left me in a safe state. His professionalism and skill sets stand out. He is a credit to your organisation.
Thank you. He saved my life.

Emergency response
We have emergency works going on due to water entering the gas system; around 350 homes have been impacted. SGN were quick and efficient to provide heaters & hot plates. They have called everyday in the morning and evening to check in/ensure we are ok and don’t need any other support. They even came to check up on us in person. Set up a local hub so people could go and ask questions arranged for hot showers at local places free of charge.
The response in an emergency cannot be faulted. They have been exceptional. The engineers have been working incredibly hard in rain and freezing temperatures to ensure we have our supply as soon as possible. A number of the houses are back on but not all, and they are continuing to work as fast as they can to remove the water and get us all reconnected. It’s been 4 days & they have removed over 70000 litres of water from the system. Incredible well organised response considering they didn’t even know how water had got into the system for the first part of the emergency; if you stopped any of the gas engineers and asked for information they were incredibly polite and understanding of worries and concerns.
I know our community is incredibly grateful for their efforts. They have updated us regularly via telephone calls, in person, texts and emails. They communicate incredibly well and help you understand the problem in simple terms.
They even provided vouchers to our local supermarket, electric vouchers for the extra costs incurred. You would want this company handling any gas emergency; I could not fault them - I say this even though we are still without a supply; you can see how incredibly hard everyone is working to ensure we are back on as soon as possible - an amazing thing to have when you are heavily impacted without a supply.
Wonderful company if we ever experienced this again I would hope SGN would be managing it as I have full faith in their abilities to
