Been using this device now for many years and although much easier to use than my prescribed CPAP, you need to be aware you could end up, like me, with a major misalignment of your teeth. It has only affected my bottom front teeth but they are now well out of place protruding forward. I have considered getting fitted with an invisalyn to bring them back in to position but then it would mean going back to CPAP. Probably the Somnowell is the lesser of two evils, but they really need to make this issue much more obvious in their literature expecially since they have changed the design which makes bottom teeth protrusion much more likely.

Somnowell delivered everything it promised – no more snoring or sleep apnea. I wake up feeling refreshed. I'd forgotten how that felt and that's money definitely well spent. Also the care and help from the Somnowell Practitioner, Dr Stephen Keane at The Smile Centre, Releigh, was professional and friendly. So much so, I changed my dental practice to them. Somnowell has made a positive change to my health and I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone else.

Furious to see your reply, you contacted my Dentist without my permission. New Customers beware of Somnowell.
I have the Somnowell for 2 months and it effectively stops my snoring because I wake in pain every hour through the night, the upper section is crushingly tight, the lower section section fits and you could forget it is there.
I bitterly regret spending £1500 on this and I have now completely lost all trust in my Dentist of 30+ years. I now refuse to see him.

I have had the devise for 5 years. The quality of my sleep and that of my dear wife has improved markedly. I would have no hesitation in recommending this product to anyone suffering from snoring or sleep apnoea. AJB 65 years.

This device is a life changer! I tried Cpap which was a disaster. can anyone sleep with that on their face and that noise! I tried gum shield type device, and although it seemed like a good idea, it was hopeless and kept slipping out. Then I tried Somnowell, thank god. It actually works!

Having snored very loudly and sounding like a pneumatic drill for many years, I have given my husband many a sleepless night. I decided to invest in a somnowell device. I have had a bulky plastic device previously which was uncomfortable and just did not work.
This custom made piece of metalwork is easy to tolerate and it works!
With these devices you get what you pay for and this, I believe, is well worth the investment.
I do occasionally snore just a little if I have had alcohol or am exceptionally tired- but absolutely nothing like the previous level of noise I made.
I was also concerned that the device might damage my veneers but this is not the case.

I have now had my Somnowell device for 3 years and I must say it was one of the best investments I have ever made - my wife would also agree with that statement !!
Highly recommended - it transformed our lives

I was fitted with a Somnowell device in 2015. The significant cost was balanced by the fact that it worked like no other treatment had. It eased my sleep apnea and helped me to have a good night’s sleep. As time wore on, it needed a service and the cost of this was, again, significant. But it did the job. The problem came when I had a filling replaced and the resulting, rather small, difference had a huge impact on the fit of the Somnowell. The significant cost of the recent service put me off seeking to have it adjusted, which was a mistake. The result was that a dental bridge at the front of my mouth which had remained firmly in place for many years was dislodged by the now ill fitting Somnowell. The bridge has been fitted back twice and failed both times after only afew months. Now I’m looking at a dental plate or implants. There is no doubt that if it wasn’t for the Somnowell device the bridge would have remained in place for a long time to come. Since then, I have started to use a CPAP machine which works like a dream and interferes not a jot with my dental work. So yes, Somnowell works but as well as the significant original cost, which has risen since my fitting, you have to add on the cost of necessary adjustments and servicing. Add to this the risk that, over time, if necessary and expensive adjustments are not made following even minor dental work, then catastrophic dental problems may follow, as I found out to my cost.

Excellent product - works for snoring and apnoea in my case - and outstanding customer service. Takes a few days to get used to but well worth persevering.

I am a 43 year old woman with Upper Airways Resistance syndrome (UARS) and mild sleep apnea (OSA). The NHS referred me for a MAD (after my efforts with CPAP had failed) but the wait time was 8 months and I decided to try a Somnowell as the turnaround time was much quicker and I was so desperate for some good quality sleep.
- Quality and Performance 4/5
The Somnowell is a good quality item. It fits perfectly, stays in place during the night (important if you are a mouth breather and open your mouth during sleep) and is robust and lightweight.
It is significantly better than the NHS model (which I now have too), which falls off the teeth if you open your mouth during sleep.
I have deducted one star as there are very small screws which rubbed my mouth and gave me minor ulcers, but overall this is a quality item.
- Effectiveness 0/5
This did not help my UARS or OSA whatsoever. I used the device for four and a half months and experienced no improvement in symptoms and a repeated sleep study showed no difference in AHI or RERA.
Around this time I saw a private ENT doctor (about chronic rhinitis) who explained that the Somnowell and other MAD devices mainly helped people with large tongues and big tongue plates - I do not have these. He examined me and said that the Somnowell would never help me as my main sleep breathing problem is that I could not breath through my nose. He recommended that I immediately discontinue use of the Somnowell and that I instead have surgery, which I have now done.
It is of course problematic that the NHS do not offer these kind of examinations to OSA patients (I queried why and was told it was a cost issue), and that they are outside the remit of the dentists who fit Somnowell devices. The cost of seeing a private ENT doctor was considerably less than the cost of the Somnowell, and you may want to consider this first if you are unsure if the device would work for you.
Side Effects and Ongoing Problems 0/5
During the 4.5 months that I used this device I suffered AWFUL side effects. I had horrendous pain in my teeth, jaw and head. When I removed the device in the daytime my jaw would not go back into its proper place - this mis-alignment of my teeth caused terrible difficulties with eating (I could not bite or chew properly) and even speaking clearly. It was truly dreadful.
I went back to the dentist who fitted it and he made me another device (at some expense) to wear in the daytime to try and re-set my jaw position, this gave a very minimal improvement.
It is now 6 months since I stopped using the device on the advice of the ENT doctor, and I have ongoing and significant problems with my teeth and jaw. My jaw has never gone back to its original position and protrudes, my teeth are misaligned. I have been grinding my teeth in my sleep and because they are now mis-aligned this causes such excruciating pain that I wake up frequently in the night. I still cannot chew properly and have to choose mushier types of food to eat. I have had yet another device made (more expense) to try and minimise this - but because the grinding force on my teeth is so great my teeth have actually moved and this custom made device no longer fits.
Despite not using the Somnowell for 6 months I have constant pain in my teeth, jaw and horrendous headaches. My teeth are now wonky and my protruding jaw is ugly.
Previously I had exemplary dental health and no teeth or jaw problems.
Overall 0/5
I very much regret buying a Somnowell, the ongoing problems have been devastating and actually made my sleep quality worse.
I had no idea that the negative consequences could be so severe and far reaching, even after discontinuing use of the device. The Somnowell has actually given me additional health issues to contend with.
Ironically, I don't think the NHS MAD would have caused these problems because it would have fallen off rather than forcing my jaw into such an unnatural position.
I can understand the desperation to try the Somnowell device - but if possible it could be worth consulting with doctors to see if it would specifically be suitable for you rather than just taking a punt.
I have engaged repeatedly with my Somnowell dentist, with my NHS dentist and with the NHS Maxillo Facial dept about my Somnowell and the problems it has caused. Somnowell customer services seem to believe that if the device doesn't work it's simply because the adjustment isn't right, or the customer hasn't tried hard enough, but this was not true in my case.

I have been a very poor sleeper for about 10 years, as I suffer from both Restless Leg Syndrome and Sleep Apnoea. The latter was finally diagnosed in April 2019 as being 'moderate'. There then followed several weeks of trying CPAP equipment, including probably 12 different masks. Despite my determination and the kind and assiduous efforts of the technicians, I found it impossible to adjust to wearing a mask and, usually, threw it off in the middle of the night. The worst feature was that I was unable to relax with it on, unless I was lying on my back and so, as one might expect, my apnoea was found to be 'severe, and both central and obstructive'. Not surprising, as I believe most people snore more loudly lying on their backs.
Therefore, I decided to have a Somnowell mandibular device made for me. It cost around £1500 and I couldn't be sure that it would work for me but in desperation, I decided to give it a try. After a few weeks wearing the Somnowell (during which my husband was convinced that the problem was solved), I decided to have a sleep test done privately. I was asked to spend five nights WITHOUT the Somnowell and to do the test on the fifth night. To my utter joy I was told I had NO sleep apnoea, except on occasions when I was lying on my back. I actually believe the device has retrained my jaw to stay in position during sleep. I do still wear it most nights, even though I am convinced it is not entirely necessary.
Initially, I felt the device to be intrusive, but it never stopped me from falling asleep and, when I awaken, I am hardly aware it's in place.
I would not hesitate to recommend a Somnowell device to someone with snoring/sleep apnoea problems. I suppose there is no guarantee that it will work but, if it does, it is like a miracle. Such a pity the health service does not seem to acknowledge the existence of the device.

I have been using the Somnowell Mandibular Chrome device for a few months now, the device had been recommended to me by an ENT specialist as my snoring was reaching epic levels and was having a negative effect on my poor suffering husband. Id never heard of The Somnowell mandibular device up until then. I was fitted for the device at my dentists, who was very supportive and informative. I have to be honest when I first saw the device I thought it looked scary! However, when I wore it I was amazed how light it felt in the mouth, how comfortable it was and it was easy to fit and wear, I was, however, keen to find out if it actually worked, It took me a few weeks to adjust wearing it on a night time, now 6 weeks in I find wearing it part of my night-time ritual, I sleep soundly, and I no longer snore!! Maintaining the Mandibular device is easy, I brush it with toothpaste after every wear, and I pop it into the dishwasher once a week. I was told this was the Rolls Royce of mandibular devices, and I'm thinking they may possibly be right. I had tried quite a few gadgets and remedies in my time but this really is the most successful. My hubby loves the mandibular device as he now gets a good nights sleep and is rested the next day as I no longer disturb him due to my snoring! I speak as I find and it has certainly worked for me.

Unfortunately it didn't work for me ,it cost me 2 months wages, but i understand it is not 100% it was a risk I took.

I struggled with my somnowell device for several weeks, but in the end just had to give up on it. I found the feel of it uncomfortable in my mouth; it gripped my teeth so tightly that every time I put it in and out I was afraid I was going to chip a tooth; worst of all (and perhaps because my mouth is rather small), it obliged me to sleep slightly open-mouthed, meaning my mouth got very dry in the night, which in itself woke me up, thus defeating the whole object. The device is a great design, and very well-crafted, and it has clearly worked for many people. For me, however, it was a disappointment - an expensive mistake.

Having used plastic mandibular advancement devices for several years I knew that they stopped my snoring to a large extent but they were not particularly comfortable and it was hard to keep them clean and in shape. Five years ago I discovered Somnowell's device and it has been excellent. The cost was a bit off-putting initially but I have now had mine for five years and it is still in perfect condition so I hope for another five, by which time the cost will have been no more than I would have spent on bulky plastic gadgets. It is professionally fitted and the mouth can be opened easily with it in place, making it pretty comfortable. My jaw is slightly receding and bringing it forward stops my snoring. It has been a huge relief to my husband and it is also a lot less embarrassing not to be snoring when away from home. I would recommend it unreservedly.

Initially very good. But if one's gums are not too good it soon affects the gums and loosens the teeth. I dumped mine.

Firstly, the somnowell device really does help with my mild aponea and to some extent cuts out a lot of my snoring (but not all). My new appliance had some teething (geddit?) problems with fitting after a month but now it is very comfortable and doesn't pop out as it did at first. I recommend one wholeheartedly :) Customer service is first rate as well

Ordered this very expensive item following dental consultation only to find did not fit initially. Further adjustments by dental surgeon have corrected most of bad fit but still further to go.
Worst of all is that the extra large case supplied by Somnowell too small for the device. Even sent photo of this to Somnowell customer service email but no reply.
The device as it is has made a difference in part but the overall experience to date has not been good
