Disappointing Quality and Zero Follow-Up

I purchased multiple glasses at Specsavers Weert 1.5 years ago. I specifically asked for the most scratch-resistant coating due to issues with my previous sunglasses. I was advised to go for thinner lenses, which were said to include that coating.

Now all glasses, including those I wear less often, show micro scratches and signs of delamination. After returning to the store, I was told I should have chosen a different lens option for better scratch resistance – completely contradicting the original advice.

I submitted two written complaints via the online contact form. Both were ignored, despite a stated 5-day response time.

Very disappointed by the poor product quality and lack of customer service. I expected more from a major optical chain.

Dear Jeroen,

Thank you very much for your review.

What a shame to read that the glasses do not have the quality you are used to from us.

My sincere apologies that you have not heard anything about your complaint yet.

Due to the busy period, the processing time is unfortunately increasing, for which we would like to apologize. Of course, we are currently doing everything we can to reduce this, so that we can answer everyone correctly and on time.

Whatever you do, don't go to Specsavers

I strongly recommend avoiding Specsavers in Emmen. I had a vision test there on March 31. After rejecting numerous attempts at upselling to much more expensive glasses, I ordered glasses and contacts, and was told to pick it up on Apr 10. When I went there on that day they said they had forgot to order contacts. Ok, everybody makes mistakes, so I said "no problems", just order them and just let me when know they I can pick them up

After not hearing anything for three weeks I stopped by the store on May 1, and the woman I spoke to, after looking in the back for several minutes, came out a gave me two boxes of trial lenses. Why she gave me trial lenses, I have no idea, but she was clearly new at her job and couldn't explain it either. The store was busy so I went home and the following day sent a complaint by e-mail to Specsavers centrally. They responded on May 5, writing that "We would like to let you know that we have forwarded your complaint to the store. They will contact you themselves to discuss your situation further and to help you further. "

I write this on May 22 and I still haven't heard anything from Specsavers Emmen. People can forget, and mistakes can happen. However, it's clear that this store has had three opportunities/reminders to get this simple thing done - and this behaviour from the people working there is no accident.

Why, I wonder? I can think of four possible reasons:

- Maybe it is store policy to ignore the customers who refuse to be upsold/sold much more expensive glasses?

- Maybe the people working there are totally incompetent or they just don't care at all about their customers?

- Maybe they have a problem with me being a foreigner (for this reason I had my wife there to help with the language barrier), and they actively discriminate against customers from other countries?

- Or maybe they have a problem with me and my wife being LGBT? It would be a first for us to experience this, but maybe they are inspired by Donald Trump and the MAGA people?

Regardless of which of these four is the reason, I strongly recommend everybody else find a different store for glasses and contacts.

Worst opticians anywhere.

If I could have left a 0 I would have done. I had an appointment today, 10/5/25 at 10.40am. I was seen straight away for the initial checks and then told to take a seat to wait for the optician. People who arrived after me kept going in to see opticians and I was still sat there at 11.20am. I went to reception to say I was leaving. They said they didn’t know why I had not been seen and I could wait. I said I wasn’t willing to wait any longer and made an appointment for the following week. On my way home I received a phone call from specsavers apologising and they said if I went back on the same day I would be seen straight away by the director. I arranged to go back at 3.30pm. They did the first initial checks again and then I was still waiting at 3.50pm. I then told reception and would be leaving and to remove my details from their database. The excuse from one of their members of staff was they didn’t know I had returned even though I had checked in and had the initial tests done. The staff there obviously don’t know what each other is doing. The specsavers I was visiting was Broadway, Bradford.

Appalling home visit service

My husband is unwell & disabled We had a home visit on 31/7/24 for a sight test which was fine , my husband needed a new prescription and chose some frames . The total cost was £325 In January the arm broke off so I took them onto our local Specsavers . They said the fault was with my husband and sold me another pair of frames for £50. Last week the same thing happened again . My husband has been wearing glasses for over 20 years & this has never happened before so this time I contacted Specsavers . The service I received has been appalling and upsetting . I tried to ring .. no reply so I complained on the enquiry form & the manager of the Burnley branch rang me & said I needed to speak to the home visit team he gave me a different phone number ..no reply so I tried the email he gave me .. it bounced back . I tried online chat & they said someone would ring in 24-48 hours . No one rang so I rang the number again & got a person who’s name I didn’t get but who knew my name & used it in an intimidating & patronising manner which was rude & infuriating though no one has seen the frames he told me that my husband had broken them I was furious and out the phone down . We now have frames costing £375 that aren’t fit for purpose & my husband is wearing his old frames with the wrong lenses that he has had years & never broken . Shocking service

My visit to Specsavers

My experience this morning
I struggled to visit the opticians as I’m encountering vertigo. I had the realisation the week before that my recent purchased glasses were causing me discomfort when reading. Whilst there I needed to use the ladies room. The bizarre thing was I stated to one member of staff I needed the ladies who left me to walk to the back of the shop. To be loudly offensively told toilets are only for staff for me to report it to the person attending to me in the shop who trotted off to talk to the manager, who returns to tell me there is only a disabled toilet which excluded me. I asked so what happens to elderly customers or parents with young children to get no acknowledgment. Having sat in the shop for 30 minutes in discomfort from the glare of the lights feeling nauseous left. As this is still on my mind I wanted to share this bad customer experience and ask you the reader have you experienced this type of treatment. Also to enquire can no exceptions to the rule be made. Are all specsavers like this? Is this acceptable

Wrong prescription given and had to pay again

Wrong prescription given, took glasses back and the prescription was lowered. Was told to take the glasses and see how I get on with these. Still to strong, was told to let my eyes get used to them. Absolutely not doing that. 14 months on and I was advised to go back for another eye test. Eye test done and like I had been saying since the previous test the optician advised previous glasses were indeed to strong for my eyes. So I’ve had to pay for another eye test and new glasses. Which in the terms and conditions I shouldn’t have had to pay for a test or glasses as no fault of mine as the previous prescription was wrongly prescribed. Move forward to going to collect the new glasses and they have given me distance glasses instead of reading glasses. I’ve emailed the store previously with no reply, regarding a refund. I’ve spoken to the store manager in person today and she said head office will have to sort this out. Facebook messenger having no joy either. So £95 out of pocket due to the negligence of the staff. So if anybody from head office reads this I would be very grateful for you to contact me regarding this matter

Not happy with my local branch.

The arm came off of my glasses. I took it into the shop. The lady I spoke to was abrupt and told me I had broken them or crushed them myself. Wouldn't listen when I told her it broke when I went to put them on. Charged me £50 for a pair of frames off the display that have probably been tried on by many customers. I had no opinion but to pay as I cannot see without them. This is the 2nd time now the same shop has done this to me. The last time I was told my eyes were really bad and sold me loads of medication. I went back a week later to be seen by another optician to be told there is nothing wrong with my eyes and it was probably hay-fever. Been using them for years, but will not be going back when my next eye test is due. Fuming cost me £50 I didn't really have.

Having tried another optician (pricey, cold service, zero extra info) I returned to Specsavers and glad I did. Now able to use daily contacts as well as my vari-focals - a process that I thought I would struggle with, being screamish re touching eye, but customer care was top and I got over that hurdle.

Very bad experience at the Hammersmith…

Very bad experience at the Hammersmith store in London. They gave me the wrong prescription for my contact lenses. I specifically request lenses to be able to read and instead the prescribe me a distance one. Went back and they found the mistake and prescribed a pair of bifocal lenses. After three weeks waiting and two weeks wearing the wrong lenses. Today finally the trial lenses arrived and the person in charge of the store told me that she will not give the lenses if I didn’t book another appointment. So after explaining that I couldn’t go back and I would try the lenses they refuse to give it to me. Very bad customer service. Waisted 5 weeks wearing wrong lenses and they think that they are in the right!!! Very disappointed!! Now I have to find another optician wasting more time to wait for new lenses and result wasted £30 on the appointment. Close your store you suck!!!!

I had an appointment with Specsavers…

I had an appointment with Specsavers Felixstowe on 30th December 2024. I was told I had cataracts and they were referring me to Ipswich hospital. I had heard nothing since. So I telephoned Specsavers today and they told me to call Ipwich hospital. I did this and was told there was no referral for me. I re-contacted Specsavers and they said it was still with the referrals team and it could take 8 months for an appointment. I am shocked by this. Is this normal ? Have others had this problem

I have been a customer of Specsavers…

I have been a customer of Specsavers for years, along with my wife and sons. Over the years, we have likely spent thousands of pounds. However, my recent experience has brought an end to that. My last pair of glasses, costing well over £200, started to show issues with the coating within months. I only cleaned them with the cloth provided, but after a few months, circular patches appeared, which looked like the coating had worn off.
I had the lenses replaced, but after another 6–8 months, the coating started to wear off again. I returned to the Specsavers store where I purchased them, and they pointed out a mark on the frame, claiming it was scratched and insisting I must have dropped them. Even though they admitted the damage to the lenses would not have been caused by a drop or scratch, they stated that the presence of a scratch on the frame meant the manufacturer would accept no responsibility for the lenses.
Apart from this explanation being nonsensical, when I returned home, I closely examined the mark they had referred to as a scratch and realized it was not a scratch at all but a fleck of gold glitter. While working on a craft project, a speck of gold glitter had transferred from my finger to the glasses frame. When I rubbed my finger over it, the glitter came off, leaving the frame pristine and free of scratches.
I called the store, but they remained dismissive. When I mentioned that I intended to write to Specsavers' headquarters and try to find the CEO's email to inform them of how I was treated, the store staff scornfully told me that they were a franchise. They said any letters sent to Specsavers would simply be returned to their store and that there was no one at Specsavers who could intervene or show interest in my complaint, as they were a franchise and accountable to no one.
