The Telephone preference service or…

The Telephone preference service or should that be the Telephone protection service is totally useless and not fit for purpose. It is a subsidiary of the Direct Marketing Association and so they are in effect policing themselves I have been registered with the TPS for over 5 years but still receive unsolicited calls. Also they have no powers to issue fines but instead pass all complaints to the Information Commissioners Office. This inefficient organisation needs shutting down as they obviously have conflicts of interest.

TPS Pfffffff

This is not the first time we have provided full information to you concerning several cold call telephone calls over the years since we registered with you. Nor is it the first time that you say you did not successfully trace the offender/s. We are beginning to think that it is a complete waste of our time reporting them to you. We can, however, bar them for free under the facilities of our contract with Talktalk. Far more effective than you appear to be. Most of the calls we receive these days are from people pretending to represent companies such as Amazon and BT, so we just bar them without bothering to send them to you for investigation as they appear to be private telephones with yacking children in the background. This follows many of the earlier responses concerning TPS on the Trustpilot website. They are really are a complete waste of time and space, and an insult to human intelligence.

Not only that they haven't even replied to my last complaint directly to them about that particular call with even more direct information about the caller. They really are a complete waste of space, so I don't think I'll waste any more time raising further reports or complaints with them. Telephone Preference Service . . . they don't even publish their own telephone number. I don't wonder why.

Not fit for purpose

Not fit for purpose. You are unable to make a serious complaint they just pass the book to another body. Just not any help at all. Not doing what they claim. Shocking.

This service is a complete waste.

This service is a complete waste of time. What customers need is a place to complain to about possible scams, recorded calls and the like that may lure the less suspicious or experienced to lose much money. There is a place to report scams, but only where these have been effective. Let us have something sensible, please.

Useless service.

Useless service.

Only covers a very narrow base of calls, if the call falls outside of this narrow base (over 90%) then the service is unfit.

Pre-recorded (soliciting car accident scam) and silent calls followed by a pre-recorded (again soliciting car accident scam) aren't in their remit, what is the point of this service!

Easier to just block the calls directly on your phone than use this 'service'.

Useless and not fit for purpose!

Useless, I signed up and have seen absolutely no difference in the number of nuisance calls I get, despite registering a complaint for each...they are not fit for purpose... I am so disappointed!

God knows how many times I have…

God knows how many times I have reported unsolicited calls on TPS. Nothing ever is done! What is the point of this service and I wonder how much it is costing us from government money that would be better spent on NHS, Police etc. Conveniently they don't address scams such as the Inland revenue call from 01615130450 !!

Useless!

What on earth is the point in signing up to TPS if I still get inundated with cold calls every single day! And when I inform them that I am signed up to TPS they don't give a monkeys! Pointless exercise.

Totally and utterly useless!!

This has to be one of the most useless and pointless services available. What do they actually do? Are people being paid to do nothing? We registered years ago, but are getting about 10 scam calls a week. Use a call blocker, but they still keep coming with a different number, Why does TPS not investigate the thousands of reports on Who Called Me? Who runs TPS? Must be a real cushy number! Any jobs going?

No Stars.

I wouldn't, given the chance, award the TPS any stars. It pays lip service to those of us harrassed by would-be thieves from mud huts the world over. It promises much but delivers absolutely nothing; its website even gives the caveat that "...some companies will take no notice of the TPS,so you may still receive nuisance calls..."
It's not fit for purpose. It should be taken down or tightened up. As it stands,it's useless.

What is the remit of the TPS?

Having written to TPS regarding the increase in the number of spam, marketing calls etc I was annoyed to read the reply!!! What therefore is the point of the TPS??? SEE REPLY AS FOLLOWS

Registration with TPS does not stop all unwanted calls. The remit of TPS lies strictly within the boundaries of live unsolicited direct marketing calls. A call is considered to fall within the TPS remit if it is unsolicited and relates to the sale or marketing of a product or service during a live telephone conversation.

Recorded and automated sales calls including silent calls do not fall within the remit of TPS. TPS does not stop other call types such as market research, debt collection, scam calls and general nuisance calls.

We would advise you to contact your service provider if they have a call blocking service available. They may be able to physically block these types of calls from reaching your landline.

TPS is not a call blocking or baring service and there is no physical presence on the telephone line.

If you would like TPS to investigate an live unsolicited direct marketing call, please use our website

You can report scam calls to Action Fraud.

TPS Toothless Pathetic Sham

TPS Toothless Pathetic Sham

I don't see what useful purpose the organisation serves they are uninterested toothless and never never take any action over numbers reported to them. They should be shut down they serve no useful purpose to the public all you ever get is the shame rubbish template response even when giving them detailed information. If you report a number all you will ever get is this response...... Thank you for contacting us about the unsolicited direct marketing call you received on a telephone number you have registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) or Corporate TPS (CTPS).

You may already be aware that the TPS does not have the facilities to know which companies are calling you and therefore relies on the complainant to ascertain this information upon the receipt of an unsolicited direct marketing call.

Despite our best efforts, TPS has not been able to ascertain valid contact and/or address details to raise this particular complaint. Please note that even on occasions where a company name and/or telephone number is supplied TPS may still be unable to ascertain valid company details if during the course of our investigation the company name and/or telephone number supplied is found to be fictitious. Please note that TPS does not have the facility to track or trace telephone calls that you have received.

Although we have been unable to raise this complaint against the offending company we will include in our regular report to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO), they are the body responsible for enforcing the Privacy and Electronic (EC Directive) Communications Regulations 2003.

Complaints investigated by us are referred to the ICO and are incorporated into their investigation into nuisance calls. Your information will help the ICO to direct its resources against those organisations that are causing the greatest nuisance. Information about the action the ICO takes can be found on its website at

The ICO has and continues to issue fines against companies for making unsolicited direct marketing calls to telephone numbers registered with TPS.

Yours sincerely

I have been with the TPS for a while and reported several instances but nothing has ever been done. Mostly they say that have not enough information. In my opinion it is a complete waste of time and money.

What a waste of time

What a waste of time. You would be better of writing a note saying no more nuisance calls and sticking it on the nearest tree you would get the same result. Don't bother, get yourself a call blocker.
