Most enjoyable day spent at Vindolanda…

Most enjoyable day spent at Vindolanda yesterday! Very knowledgeable friendly approachable staff and volunteers.
Good food at cafe. (Museum a little dark.) Last but by no means least the best part of our visit 'Alex' who brought this place to life with his passion and enthusiasm, (made our day!)

Vindolanda cafe

Called into Vindolanda, first time.
Did not want to see museum, but called into cafe for lunch.
Unfortunately, unless you buy a ticket at £16, you can not use the cafe.
This is unbelievable, staff were standing around doing nothing and the cafe was completely empty.
In this day and age when places are struggling, how or why would you turn away customers?
Was allowed to buy a bottle of water, £2, absolutely ridiculous.

Great experience

We braved the January weather and we had a lovely time and felt very privileged to have our own personal tour by the delightful and very knowledgeable Helen who brought vindalanda to life. The museum and cafe were not open because of the time of year but we still had a great experience. It’s definitely a must see

Ticket before cafe for disabled person in pain

I have disabilities and often in pain. We wanted a cup of tea in the cafe before deciding whether to go in, a cuppa can help! However, we were told we had to get tickets first and bo sympathy or understanding was shown.
We left as uncertain if i could get round. A shame as we would have got member tickets as a good day out for us.. but due to the reception unlikely we will bother to visit now.

Great day out and learnt so much. Well worth a visit.

The museum is full of fabulous artifacts and so much bigger than I expected. The site on the whole is very picturesque with a lovely cafe and seating areas. You definitely need to join one of the guided tours as you learn so much about the Romans as well as the site itself. We spent four hours there and it was well worth the price of the ticket.

We visited this site yesterday and had…

We visited this site yesterday and had the most amazing guide Steve. His knowledge and expertise made the site come to life. The museum was absolutely incredible with so many finds. We were surprised at just how big the site was and growing bigger. Well worth a visit we highly recommend it. Bill and Sue Sutton from Worcester (We mentioned the Lunt Fort in Coventry). Thank you for a great experience.

A must-visit for anyone interested in history

We visited Vindolanda on New Year’s Eve in the midst of heavy rain, but it didn’t dampen our spirits one bit—what an incredible experience! Our guide was outstanding, sharing fascinating insights into the history of the forts and the lives of their inhabitants over time. Their knowledge and passion really brought the site to life for us.

The museum is truly a treasure trove, with beautifully preserved artefacts that offer a moving glimpse into Roman life. From personal items to larger finds, every display is curated with care and attention. It’s one of the most engaging museums we’ve visited.

The café was a welcome stop after exploring, with delicious food that warmed us up perfectly. Vindolanda is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. Rain or shine, this place is absolutely worth your time!

Disabled badge visitors

We visited Vindolanda in July 2024 with a wheelchair bound Mother. The person on the reception desk was most helpful, and recommended that we tour around the excavations first then take the car down to the museum where we could park in the disabled bays. We really enjoyed the excavations and managed to push my mother around them. We drove down the hill to the museum, where the disabled bays were full (only two). We spoke to the museum staff who suggested we drop my mother off, drive back up to the top car park, then walk back down to the museum, walk back up after, and drive back down. There were two of us with my mother, you’ve really had it if you are an independently disabled person or just two of you. They could have parked us in the half empty staff car park. We gave up, went back to the top car park, where we were refunded half our fee, only after the cashier checked that the bottom car park was full. This was so disappointing as we really wanted to visit the museum that my Dad had so enjoyed.

Unmissable experience

I arrived around 30 mins before opening time on a cold foggy morning and as I had no prior knowledge of this fort I walked to the Info board to get an overview of the site and was invited in from the cold by someone in the admission area, this member of staff was so enthusiastic and welcoming and she gave me lots of advice to improve my experience . I wandered around this amazing fort and soaked up the atmosphere using the descriptive boards dotted around and then walked down to the museum which is truly wonderful and contains an abundance of objects, mostly personal, which you can imagine being in everyday use by the occupants of the fort. The Vindolanda tablets are fascinating. Once again the staff member gave me more useful information and tips on where best to visit Hadrians wall.
