Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 141 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently reported significant product quality issues, including manufacturing defects like crooked logos and poor rust prevention, alongside critical component failures such as non-functional cameras, faulty infotainment, and defective driveshafts. Many also experienced problems with new vehicles, such as battery recalls, condensation in headlights, and various electrical and software glitches compromising safety, indicating a widespread decline in vehicle quality. Reviewers consistently expressed deep dissatisfaction with customer service, describing it as unhelpful, unresponsive, and rude, often leading to unresolved issues. Many felt Volvo does not care about customer satisfaction or honoring warranties. Conversely, some customers noted positive interactions with specific sales staff and dealerships, praising their politeness and helpfulness during purchase, and a few also found the cars themselves to be of good quality or enjoyable to drive.

XC90, ERAD fault

@VolvoCarUK My XC90 (only 44,000 miles, full service history) suffered a dangerous ERAD failure—clearly a known design fault. No support, no courtesy car, just a 20% goodwill offer on a £4,000 repair. I’ve been without a car for a month. Why won’t Volvo take responsibility? #VolvoXC90 #ConsumerRights

Tegenvaller

Volvo Car Netherlands provides the digital facilities for your car for a fee. These include the digital owner's manual, remote locking and unlocking, and, most importantly, the navigation system with all its notifications, such as traffic reports. The local dealer, when asked, says they have nothing to do with these activities. As a result, the annual billing is handled nationally.

The navigation system's traffic reporting has not been working for quite some time. However, Volvo Car Netherlands does not inform its customers about this and simply continues to bill them. Only when a customer complains does Volvo Car admit to the defect after a two-week waiting period, but also claims to have solved it. The program can then be loaded at the local dealer. This doesn't help me, as I'm going on vacation the very next day.

I asked Volvo Car Netherlands if they would offer some form of goodwill compensation, but they said no; I have to go to the local dealer for that. That's strange, since the dealer is supposedly not involved, right? What I meant was a gesture, not for the money, but for the principle of the matter, because I haven't been receiving the paid service for a long time. In legal terms, they were in default of their obligations. And in such a case, you compensate for the damages. That's a normal thing to do, isn't it?

I could have perhaps accepted it if Volvo Car Netherlands had informed its customers about this issue, but apparently, that wasn't worth the effort. Then, they passed the buck back to the local dealer. So, the dealer is apparently the one who has to pay for their mistakes? It's sad for Volvo drivers and the local dealers, and it's so unnecessary. Next time, be more transparent and correct, Volvo Car Netherlands.

Volvo Romania dealer charged me for radar calibration + full software update, but ACC still fails daily – no transparency on VIDA reports

I was charged for a full software update and radar/camera calibration at an authorized Volvo dealer in Romania (Primus Auto).
Despite this, the Adaptive Cruise Control still fails daily, creating a serious safety risk for me and other road users.

The so-called ‘final diagnostic report’ was completely blank, with no error codes and no customer signature – misleading and non-transparent.

Even worse, new malfunctions appeared after the update (passenger seat vertical adjustment stopped working).

This is unacceptable from a premium brand dealer. Transparency, real diagnostics, and working safety systems should be guaranteed, not ignored.”*

Terrible experience...

I was having issues with my Volvo and took it to the Volvo center. They told me the NSF spring was broken and that was the only problem. I mentioned several times that my car was becoming wobbly, that there was corrosion on the rims, and I asked if anything else was wrong. They said both the rims and the other parts were fine. They replaced the spring and handed my car back, saying everything was fine. The second I put my key in, a low oil warning appeared on the dash. Over time, the car became more and more wobbly and something was definitely not right at all.

I then took it to an independent garage, where they told me the CV axle was worn out and needed replacement. Volvo does not sell the original parts outside, which was very frustrating, especially since they had not diagnosed the issues properly and now I cannot get the original part. I also believe some rims still have issues and there is a sound coming from the front part as well.

This process has been extremely frustrating and time consuming. I emailed Volvo on 9th August, and now it is the 21st, yet I still have not received any support. In the meantime, I have to drive like this and take my car to other places just to diagnose and fix the problems. They are still investigating whether the car belongs to us while I continue dealing with these issues. Totally a nightmare, I would not recommend at all. I love my Volvo but as my experience the service and customer support have been terrible so far.

Beware Volvo Finance

I enjoyed 3 years of good motoring in a Volvo XC60. When the lease ended and they came to collect the car, they wanted to charge me over £900 per wheel for damaged rims. The collection agent pointed out thatbother comparable car brands charge a max of £200 per wheel and refurbish the rims. Volvo refused to discuss the issue, closed the official complaint I made without discussing it with me, passed my data without my permission to a third party agency and then offered a feeble £200 in compensation for this data breach which they never paid. They sent a string of harassing emails. In the end we paid because I was undergoing treatment for a serious illness. My advice is never to enter into any agreement with Volvo Finance. The cars might be good (I have owned six over the years) but the Finance Team are terrible, aggressive, inflexible and careless of your data and your loyalty.

Refusal to pay extra costs

My car is part of global recall to replace a battery module in my 2017 Volvo XC60 hybrid. The necessary module is not available. I have bought in the meantime a new Volvo and as long as the repair can’t be done I cannot sell my old car due to safety reasons. In the meantime I pay insurance and other costs for the old car. Volvo is refusing to compensate these costs.

Leather is pulling away from the dash

Leather is pulling away from the dash. Called Volvo and explained the issue. From reading other forums, it was said that Volvo admitted to not using enough glue on the dash boards. Spoke with Volvo customer service and they said there is nothing they can do. Do better Volvo.

It’s has been the worst car buying…

It’s has been the worst car buying experience I have ever had. When ordering the xc90 in the showroom the order got stuck in the system so had to go home not knowing if I had ordered a car or not. 5 hours later had to finish the order at home. Then a week later got a date to pick the car up. So off we went on the day to pick the car up. Only to get a call when were 10 minutes from the dealer to say the car wasn’t ready and it would be another 2 days. Then the service book said the needs servicing in 12 months time but the car says 8 months time.so got in touch with customer service to find out why. Said they would get back to me in 48 hours that was a week ago. The car is ok but customer support is shocking so this will be my first and last Volvo and will be going back to BMW as soon as possible.

Volvo out of stock of shock absorbers

We had a fault with our Volvo V60. It took 7 days for our usual dealer Bells of Northampton to ring us back and in the meantime we had to take the car elsewhere. Then it turns out that Volvo are completely out of stock of shock absorbers and we have to order them from Europe.

Volvo Tauranga New Zealand r absolutely…

Volvo Tauranga New Zealand are absolutely hopeless.
The sales team might be good however the the maintenance workshop is an absolute joke and I am very disappointed in the workshop manager as well they should close down the service department and only sell cars.
My xc60 2013 was for 6 months in the garage collecting dust previous to that they told me with the standard line we have tried to replicate the issue you experienced but couldn't faulty the car a statement from the front desk lady who did the test driving! Seriously !
Close down the service department from Volvo in Tauranga.
Due to this I purchased now I a Mercedes and will replace my other Volvos too.
I am absolutely guttered that I can't drive Volvo in Tauranga New Zeeland any more due to there level of incompetence.

My Volvo C40 broke down, and I have an appointment in the service in 4 months!

My Volvo C40 broke down, and I have an appointment in the service in 4 months!
I booked an appointment in two weeks (on 9th July) via their website for a service in London. They emailed me saying the website was showing incorrect dates due to a technical issue, so they had an appointment in August. I booked an appointment in August via their app. A few days later, they called and said they were fully booked until mid-October. What? You buy an expensive car and they’re making you wait 4 months for an appointment in the service! It’s a shame for the brand, considering themselves premium.

Avoid the Volvo V60 MK2 version

Be warned: the MK2 Volvo V60 has a known issue with its tailgate struts. On early models, Volvo acknowledged the fault and issued a recall to replace defective components under warranty. However, for later models, they did nothing — despite the same issue clearly persisting.

I own a 5-year-old V60, bought new and with just 61,000 miles. The tailgate struts have now completely failed. The tailgate no longer stays open and drops suddenly — a serious safety hazard. I have to stand back to avoid being hit.

Volvo's response? A repair cost of over £1,200 — and they expect me to pay half. Completely unacceptable for a safety-critical fault that is clearly a manufacturing issue.

Trying to escalate this within Volvo leads nowhere. Any complaint is pushed straight back to the ineffective Customer Relations team. No one takes ownership or accountability. Their final word? "If you don’t agree, take it to the Motoring Ombudsman."

For a brand built on promises of Safety, Quality, and Reliability, this experience has been deeply disappointing. Those values, it seems, have been quietly abandoned.

Volvo - Probably the worst service

Probably the worst service you can expect from Volvo Head Office. Paint work is coming off the front bumper on a 15 month old car. Unfortunately Volvo have classed this us wear and tear and stone chip. Two independent body work garages have confirmed it’s not wear and tear but faulty paint work. As for warranty, once again it only covers 1st owner. Paid over £35,000 for a car and it’s poor showing by Volvo.

VOLVO UK INCOMPETENT TO THE CORE, DECEITFUL, UNTRUSTWORTHY !

We collected our new 2025 Volvo V60 estate in our chosen colour Silver Dawn in April this year. We ordered in Feb & we`re informed it could be up to 6-7 months for delivery. Unexpectedly we received a phone call two weeks later saying our car had arrived & was ready.. Upon collection the car was left outside & had been left running unattended for 30 minutes plus as apparently the battery was flat.. Both sets of keys were also in the car... Not a good start. Now this is where things start going wrong. After further inspection of the vehicle we noticed that the bonnet was twisted & raised on one side which made the gap wider on the off side. Also & very oddly one swage line on the bonnet did not line up with the swage line on the nose cone but one swage line on the opposite side did. The off side headlight stuck out by 1cm further than the nearside headlight. The rear tailgate was twisted & the gaps were bigger on one side also. Luckily for us we spotted these defects before 30 days had expired so the car was swiftly & rightly rejected. After a lot of messing about & discussion the dealership who were now very apologetic had offered to rectify the faults under a Volvo warranty claim. Get this !!!! Volvo UK then refused this claim / offer saying the Volvo dealership repair cost was too much & wanted to inspect the car themselves. (Very odd, it`s as if they had something to hide from everyone.) Volvo UK also asked why the dealership had released the car with these defects & why did the customer (ie us) take the car in the first place. So basically Volvo UK were 100% trying to pass the buck onto the dealership & even hinting that we as the customer were at fault & to blame for the defects. I`d like to say "Why did VOLVO UK ship out a defective car, I`m guessing quality control have very low standards. At no point did either Volvo UK or the dealership offer us a temporary courtesy car as we would now be without a car now as it was rejected through no fault of ours. Who checks the line gaps on a new car as you expect them to be bang on the mark. Used cars you would check the lines / gaps etc looking for previous damage repairs etc but not a brand new Volvo. In the end the local dealership offered us one of their already in stock showroom vehicles as a direct replacement, a way of making things right I guess which I do appreciate. It's a hollow result for us as it's not the colour we had originally ordered plus we also paid for tinted windows but the replacement does not have them. So aftermarket tints will now have to be fitted. Very poor show by Volvo UK who at the end of the day really do not care about the customer. Three new cars we have had from Volvo over the last 11 years, will we buy another ? Who knows but I'll be checking bodylines & gaps on any new car from now on.. Volvo UK hang your heads in shame as you are incompetent to the core. Makes me truly think that you (Volvo UK) were already aware of the defects on this vehicle & did not want the main dealership to find out that a damaged vehicle had been given to them to be sold on to an unsuspecting customer with hopefully poor eyesight.. Well Volvo UK you did well & truly get caught out on this one as my eyes spotted the faults very quickly. Buy a car in haste from VOLVO UK & repent at leisure as they really do not give a damn..

Buy something else

I have a Volvo EX30 which I took delivery of in October 2024. Within the first few days I started having issues with the car. The car wont unlock and it unlocks itself. During the winter months the condensation inside the car was terrible. I had to have the blower on full, all the time whilst driving to keep the windows clear. The stereo often has no sound. To reset the screen, you need to use the buttons on the steering wheel, which don't work.
I have been to three separate dealers regarding these issues but none of them are interested, The car came from Raychapman motors. but they're over 300 miles away from my home, so they told me to contact my local volvo dealer. So I contacted Volvo at Stirling. Who couldn't look at the car for over two months.
After inspecting the car, they said they are aware of all the issues, but they have no solutions for any of them. And said, they hope a future software update would fix the locking/unlocking issues.
So I contacted tusker (the leasing company). They advised to book in to another Volvo dealer. So it was booked in to Newbridge. Another two month wait.
With the exact same outcome. Not interested in fixing the faults.
I wish I had looked at the reviews for Volvo before getting the car.
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT BUY A VOLVO.
I have had this car for 8 months now. A car that you cant get into or unlocks itself in the middle of the night isn't great.

It took me 13 years to purchase a new…

It took me 13 years to purchase a new car, and after extensive research, I decided on Volvo based on the brand’s reputation for safety, reliability, and quality. I was proud to purchase my 2024 S60 on March 12. Unfortunately, just 30 days later, a severe storm caused an old tree to fall on my car, damaging the windshield, dashboard, and steering column.

While the situation was heartbreaking, I understood it was out of anyone’s control. Thankfully, my insurance provided a rental for 30 days. But what I did not expect—and what has been far more frustrating—is the lack of response, accountability, and support from Volvo since then.

My car has now been in the shop for over two months, and the necessary parts still have not arrived. Despite multiple calls and emails to Volvo Corporate Customer Care, I have been told—more than once—that the parts would be expedited within 10–12 days. That promise has been broken repeatedly.

I’ve left voicemails, emailed several times, and even requested a supervisor call me back. I was told I would be contacted within 24–48 hours. That never happened. Instead, I’ve been left with silence or empty reassurances. I am now personally covering the cost of a rental car and making payments on a vehicle I cannot even drive—all while receiving no resolution or meaningful communication from Volvo.

As someone who has worked in customer service for over 25 years, I am truly disheartened. I know what it means to treat customers with respect, empathy, and follow-through. This experience has been the opposite.

I also want to share—though this is deeply personal—that I have been battling a serious illness, and this ongoing situation is creating unnecessary stress that is not healthy for me.

I am writing this publicly not out of anger, but in hopes that Volvo will finally take responsibility and deliver the support and service I expected when I chose to invest in this brand. I hope no one else has to go through what I’m experiencing now.

They have refused to provide a rental even though the part is on back order which is out of my control , and as I stated my insurance only covered a rental for 30 days. I still have no estimated date of completion. I would like Volvo to provide a rental until this is resolved!

Sincerely,
Kesha Settles

We purchased a new car from Volvo

We purchased a new car from Volvo, told there would be a 3-4 mo lead time. We were then told a new car was available in 3 weeks, after someone “pulled out” (no further details) but were assured the car was brand new, so we agreed. Despite buying the car from Volvo directly, the car has shown to have multiple issues, highlighted by Volvo themselves, (independent of us). Yet, Volvo won’t engage with any of the issues they themselves have raised.

Unnecessarily stressful and arduous trying to get any form of assistance. Very unexpected that Volvo would engage in such misconduct. (Also worth mentioning the disappointing conduct from the Sales team at the dealership).

We are raising the conduct formally for investigation but want to forewarn others, so they might avoid a similar situation.

Terrible service and extortionate pricing

Having noticed digital warning indications and problems changing gear, I took my late 2019 Volvo V60 to be the local dealership whom after running their diagnostics advised a complete replacement of the automatic gearbox. This would all come at a cost of shade under £10k..!!! The vehicle has been fully serviced by Volvo, has 45000 on the clock and in otherwise great condition. To be fair, the local dealership seemed surprised at the extent of the work required and approached Volvo UK for a contribution to be to the work required - initially, they advised a nil contribution available which I found amazing given the extent of the work required and the age etc of car. After formally complaining to Volvo UK they eventually contributed 10% (excluding VAT of course) of the repairs costs and the local dealership reduced their labour costs. I was still left with a bill of over £8,600 and given I needed the car back had no option but to pay the ransom, given alternative garages could not assist. I would avoid Volvo like the plague and will never buy another one after this disgusting episode.
