Very deceptive, valuations are often 2 or 3 times what any buyers are offering. Substantial fees accrue while one waits for an upturn in prices which may never come.

A solid investment model, acceptable fees, low risk (as far as I can tell...) and quite attractive returns (~5%/year after fees, before taxes) - what's not to like? A very easy-to-use addition to portfolio diversification that has, it seems, also survived the Brexit upheaval quite well. Can certainly recommend WhiskyInvestDirect as a way of investing with a good risk/reward ratio.
My experience with WID started in January 2016 and here are my observations.
First, I like WID business model which targets blending single malts with grains. This model is very rationally positioned with attractive 10+% CAGR returns. Of course, it contrasts to a highly speculative market of very rare (30+ y.o.) fine whiskies which may offer higher returns though poses much higher risks and requires a professional diversification in terms of brands, vintages and casks.
Second, I like the WID transparency regarding the investment risk. In addition to study of Q&A and T&C on website, I did my due diligence by visiting their office in Hammersmith. Also I was highly encouraged by visiting several Islay distilleries and learning about strict HMRC controls over the entire whisky storage and distribution process. Another risk control is a frequent audit of WID inventory signed by world-renowned distilleries and top world spirit producers.
Third, there is a solid price floor. WID business model allows investors to hold 10 y.o. single malt for mere 10£/LPA, or roughly 3-4£ per 0.7L bottle, or 15 y.o. for very attractive 17-18£, or 6£ per 0.7 bottle providing healthy margins in comparison with retail or duty-free prices which can easily command 20-25£ per 0.7L bottle.
Overall, I consider investment to whisky maturation as a sensible exposure to non-traditional asset classes.
10.6% profit after first year, after deducting their fees! It is for longer term, in my mind, 6+ years. You just invest in it and you leave it to mature, literally.
Good and interesting asset in my investment portfolio.
Cheers (literally)
I have used this site since 2016 and wouldn't use any other. First class way of investing in whisky.
I have been dealing with Whiskyinvestdirect for a few years now. When I first ventured in this world there were points I didn't understand. But a couple of phone calls and all was explained to my satisfaction. This was done in a very friendly and professional manner. Since then I have been pleased with my investment and the way in which it has panned out.
I find WhiskyInvestDirect very easy to use; a solid website, good support, good supporting information makes my whisky investing this way painless.
Great service with total transparency. On the few occasions I have had a query or made a suggestion, I got a speedy and personal response - both by phone and email.
This is certainly worth considering as an alternative asset in a balanced portfolio but it is not a short term trading asset due to the relatively high buy/sell costs (1.75% each way). Also note that prices dipped sharply at the start of the pandemic as did most assets but they recovered to their long term trajectory remarkably swiftly.
Also note that sooner or later there may well be a cyclical setback in maturing scotch prices due to supply/demand imbalances but, provided you have a long term outlook, you can continue to hold increasingly old scotch that appreciates in value year by year due to age. The market will recover when the imbalance resets itself.
My personal approach is to buy on an 8 year view and after a couple of years sell a small amount each year to finance holding costs. When I receive a bid (usually at quite a good premium so far) on a line of scotch, I recycle most of the proceeds into new scotch to hold and take some cash out.
So far I have made a fairly consistent 8-10% pa return but I am prepared to sit out any future setbacks. I have been pleasantly surprised that over the last couple of years, neither Brexit nor the US 25% tariff on Scotch imports had any discernible effect on prices.
Certainly an investment worth considering for a portion of your portfolio.
Had a little issue with regards the regular investors reward - problem generated by my own error, but WID were very helpful in sorting the problem out for me
Had an issue with my account (lost my password), Michele was very helpful in getting me up and running again! Thank you!
Fantastic Service
The team are a pleasure to work with and very happy with the communications and other aspects of this investment service.
I have been an investor on WhiskeyInvestDirect since September 2015 and I have enjoyed very good rates of return, of over 9% PA, after all costs, on the malt whiskeys that I have held and continue to hold. The site is easy to use and the service has been exemplary.
It wasn't the return I expected but the experience was really good and still returned more than any bank. Great customer service when required.
Their customer service is second to none- in fact its a return to how companies used to approach their customer base, with respect and a helpful nature. For a small investor this is a perfect entry into the world of whisky, espscially for those with an eye on the long term.
A really great way to get exposure to this asset class. The site is easy to use and the communication is very good.
This is a simple, effective and efficient platform. I would highly recommend it.
