Over a year and still no divorce.

Very, very slow. I paid in June 2022. It is now June 2023 and we are still not divorced. We had a very easy case with no assets to split. The lawyers are uncontactable and take weeks to respond. At this stage I feel like they’ve forgotten about us. It is very frustrating and is becoming an impediment for me and my ex moving on.

If I had known it would take more than a year, I would have paid a lot more and chosen another service.

I appreciate the info from Wikivorce, but am very disappointed with their choice of law firm.

I am sorry to hear about the delays that you experienced in your divorce case. We realise that it can be frustrating.

As you know the overall divorce process takes around 6 months even if everything goes completely to plan due to the 20 week waiting period before a Conditional Order can be applied for and the 6 week waiting period before getting a Final Order.

In addition to these legal mandatory wait periods - the court also can be slower than we would like at processing every other step of the paperwork.

We aim to keep clients updated about the progress of the case and about any delays from the court.

I apologise that in your case our solicitor response times fell below our normally high standards.

Incredible support and a lifeline.

Ruth has been an incredible support throughout my divorce which has spanned over several years. The pragmatic, specialist and genuine understanding of how stressful and hard this process is has been a lifeline to me. Without Ruth’s advice at the right time I would have truly given up.
Thank you so much for your support, I would not have made it through without you and the team.

I am very disappointed with the service I received from this company. I paid £260 for a consent order, they kept a large portion and palmed me off to a faceless solicitor who I am not allowed to speak to. The process has taken months so far.
I recommend paying a little extra and finding a local solicitor who could have completed this task in a week or two.

We are sorry to hear that the service has not met your expectations. The price of £259 (including VAT) that you paid for the Consent Order is a highly competitive price - especially when compared to the average price charged by a solicitor which is between £1000 and £1500 plus VAT. We work in partnership with a reputable, well established and professional law firm who draft the Consent Order legal documentation. The process can sometimes take longer than planned, due to a range of factors such as: delays in receiving responses from your ex, and delays in the court approval process - both of which are outside our control.

Yes, you could find a local solicitor to do the work, but it would not be a case of paying 'a little extra', in fact you would have to pay 4 to 5 times as much. Also a local solicitor would hit exactly the same delays because they would also have to wait for responses from your ex and for the external court approval process.

It’s waste of money

It’s waste of money. When you want to ask something about your case, even something very small, they say it could take up to 5 working days to reply email. Once I received an answer after several days, the answer showed that the lady is not really following my case and didn’t answer what I asked. When I told that I don’t get enough support she got offended and she said my case is not her priority, they have court cases to deal with it with deadlines ( she responded this on the same day) and she said she closed my file. I replied and said I didn’t want her to close my file, she said the time I booked all used up, I shouldn’t book any further booking and closed my file. I didn’t receive any statement or invoice how my time has been used. I was so careful to not offend that lady, because she told me in our first call, she was going through some personal problems. I didn’t say anything to offend her except that I’m not happy with her support.

I’m going through difficult times as well and I feel lost, that’s why I reached out them and I just wanted to get a proper help, raised my concern but she couldn’t bear to hear the criticism.

I am sorry to hear about your experience of using our support service. Our divorce consultants provide an invaluable service to people who cannot afford a solicitor - enabling them to negotiate a financial settlement in or out of court for a fraction of the price of using solicitor. For example a full financial remedy court case might cost £20,000 with a solicitor - but would cost around £1,500 using our service.

I have read the emails from the consultant that I believe you are referring to in your review.

Each of our consultants are helping a number of clients at various different stages of the process. We have a policy of prioritising response times for those clients who have a very important court hearings or filing deadlines coming up. That does not mean that your case is any less important - it just means that we manage our workload and priorities to ensure that for all clients the critical court deadlines for filing documents are met.

All time spent on the case by your assigned consultant is carefully recorded and is available to all clients on request. As a general rule, not only to we charge much lower fees than solicitors, we also spend far fewer chargable hours on each stage of your case.

For example to get from Form A to First Appointment (i.e. the first stage of a financial court case) typically takes around 20 hours of work.

A solicitor would charge £300 per hour times 20 so £6000.

We would work as a team with you to enable you to do 14 hours or the work yourself and we would do the other 6 hours. Our rates are around £299 for 3 hours so it would cost you £600 - which is 10 times less than you would have paid for the solicitor.

So our service is much more cost effective - but it is not suitable for everyone.

Our "Support Through Court" service is most suitable for people who:
- have internet access
- have a phone and an email account
- have access to a computer or tablet
- have a good level of spoken and written English
- are able to organise paperwork
- are comfortable with form filling (guidance will be given)
- are able to deal with written correspondence
- are willing to take on board our guidance and advice

After a discussion with the consultant and a review of your file and correspondence it seems to me that ultimately service was not suitable for your situation which is why the consultant recommended that you continue with a full service solicitor, who can do all of the paperwork for you.

I am very sorry that our service did not turn out to be a good match for your needs.
We do wish you all the best with your case.

Nicola from Wikivorce is just the best…

Nicola from Wikivorce is just the best person I could have asked for throughout my divorce process. I was an LIP and had no idea where to begin or what to do. From the beginning she was clear and concise about what the most important issues were and how we should go about presenting this to either my ex husband's solicitor or a judge if we couldn't settle.
During the 1 year process at one point I was ready to settle but she came with a caring nature and really made me question whether it was the right thing to do given my ex hadn't provided full disclosure and there was a house which hadn't been disclosed! I decided at that point not to settle and I asked her to refer me to their recommended solicitors as I knew my ex and his solicitor wouldn't take me seriously if I continued to ask for full disclosure.
I was the referred onto Brethertons and Dawn helped me win at the FDR. I had all the evidence, presented it well but most importantly she helped me compose a Position Note which really focused on what our daughter and I needed, what was left and what was fair. In between the FDR and instructing Dawn she was firm with my exes solicitor and due to taking her seriously he ended up providing all the documents we requested, proving he had lied on his Form E and ES1 and ES2 for the First appointment hearing, which knocked his confidence.
In the end I got the lump sum Dawn suggested which was more than I'd asked for and I received 2 years spousal maintenance.
If it wasn't for Nicola and Dawn I'd have settled and I'd struggle to get back on my feet.
Both ladies are doing their vocation I believe. They truly care about you and fairness and I'd highly recommend Nicola from Wikivorce and Dawn from Brethertons.
Very happy and my daughter and I can move on finally and look for our new home.

A really valuable support

I rang Wikivorce for support as was conscious of just spending money on solicitors when there were elements I thought I could do myself. I spoke with Ruth numerous times for advice which was completely free of charge. Ruth was absolutely brilliant. She knew the process and helped me all the way up to submitting the Form E. For a small fee they can check the form E and help with how you fill it in. Due to working for the same company for most of my life, my pension CETV was very high and at that stage I felt I needed a solicitor to help. I used Bretherton's and they were also very good and pensions were sent to a Pension actuary. I am now on the verge of an arbitration and if I went through this again there are many things I would do differently but one thing I would stand by is using Wikivorce for advice on next steps at every step so you are not paying a solicitor firm for things you could do yourself. Thank you Ruth for your help. You were a true god send.

Pathetic service so un-professional.

Be careful about what are you signing for. I have sign up the service which they have cancelled as their partner solicitor firm can't provide it. First of all, i have been promised refund will be made with in 15 days, which is not even standard time. I have waited almost 15 days and still no response. Now i am advised person who will authorised is on long sick leave. That's not the professional company will do first they cancelled the service and then not even refunding the payment even though it was their own fault. So disappointed and still waiting for the refund. When i tried to contact customer service, they advise to contact over email, no response over email and person put my phone down. Wish me better luck.

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately the firm of solicitors assigned to your case was unable to proceed with the service due to a conflict of interest - as they had already provided advice to the other party on your matter. When this happens it can be frustrating and disappointing - however it's not really anyone's fault - solicitors are required to check that there is no conflict of interest before they can proceed with providing legal advice in family law cases.

Having reviewed your case file we can see that your refund did take longer than normal to process due to staff illness - and we sincerely apologise for that. We are happy to confirm that a full refund has already been issued - but it can take a few days to be processed by the card payment provider.

As to your last point - we do indeed wish you all the best with your case - and although you are not able to use the services of our partner solicitor, you are more than welcome to use all of the free resources, guides and advice forum on our website.

Wikivorce are a life saver!

Nicola has incredible knowledge and a genuine passion. I was in real trouble with a divorce, my ex had access to a solicitor and barrister who bullied the case through to court using sketchy tactics and lies. I had no means to fund legal representation and had to self-respresent with no legal experience. With Nicola's help I achieved an excellent outcome. Without her I would have been in a lot of trouble and could have lost everything. I am so thankful that I found wikivorce and had Nicola on my side!

I literally don't know where to start

I literally don't know where to start. I sourced the services of wikivorce because I could not afford a solicitor to assist me with my divorce. I was given the support of consultant Nicola Phipps who has been the light in the darker of times though this process.
It has been the most soul destroying time in my life and I literally had no idea what I was doing and thought I could lose my home after being up against solicitors acting for my ex. However Nicola supported me every step of the process and I was able to gain confidence and eventually negotiate a fare outcome.
Nicola was my strength and emotional support and I will always remember her guidance through such a horrendous time.
Thanks Nic you are amazing 👏🏾

A very knowledgeable, friendly and supportive service

Without Wikivorce and their amazing team I wouldn't be able to go through the last 2 years of my divorce proceedings on my own! Prior to wikivorce I approached many solicitors and organisations but I simply didn't have the money as a single mother of 3 children to go through it. I lost all my hope and nearly gave up.
Thankfully I contacted Wikivorce and was put in touch with Nicola. She was the first person who gave me the hope for my hopeless situation, strength to fight for justice with the reassurance that she will be helping me every step of the way! Nicola never let me down and was there for me every step of the way. She put me in touch with Tom, an amazing barrister who prepared me for the final hearing and provided many advices and information throughout as well, and together we pulled it off and the justice won! I was able to self represent in court confidently and attended many hearings on my own. Nicola helped me with document that was needed, advice, ideas and very importantly she believed in me and I trusted her knowledge and competency!
Apart from a very knowledgeable and professional service, I also received a very friendly, empathic and understanding approach, and their kind and supportive words and advice will stay with me forever. Thanks to Nicola and Tom, my children won't be facing homelessness, I won't be drowning in debts, and my health has improved dramatically. I will be grateful to them for the rest of my life.

Ruth/Wikivorce = Amazing. Solicitors = Devils

This is pretty much a life-saving service. I really do credit independent people taking matters into their own hands and doing it better than who we're told are the real professionals. Ruth was very empathic and experienced in the divorce process and emotional processing of the whole debaucle. She was great at responding to emails and communicating too.

Just as other reviewers say below, solicitors are scummy and soulless. Try direct access barristers if needed, but sometimes you may not even need them. I am extremely greatful for coming across this service and how it guided me.

The Applicant without the family funds-LIP

Along, hard divorce without funding.
Everyone needs to be aware divorce costs met 50/50, no matter the situation. Any expert advise, such as a Single Joint Expert are to be met 50/50. I was broke! I paid with time, unit gaining a litigation loan, which took a year due to my lack of funds. After a 23 year marriage, nothing was in my name.
This cost implication, made it impossible to leave the marriage. The financially stronger simple wins, with better legals, it is by far NOT a level playing field.
1.Solicitors knew the situation and finance issues, used my entire funds until they no more. Coming off the court record.
2. Depression, desperation and no way to dissolve this marriage, (this was a second attempt!) I bailed the first time due to lack of funding and fear, stupidly trying to save the marriage, sadly giving time to the dishonest party to dissipate assets into cryptocurrencies(another long story).
3. Calling Wikivorce was like a "Ureka" moment, finding Nicola saved legal fees for one year, empowering to be reading and responding with the other side HNT legals.
Though well and truly terrifying, there was no other way. The other side legals playing an awful legal game with family funds.
4. Nicola was there in those dark deeply stressful moments, helping instil confidence, honesty and a lot of knowledge regarding family law.
5.Getting through multiple directional Hearings, avoidance with disclosure, lies, verbal threats and bullying tactics to avoid Full Frank Disclosure, simply provided years to push distance between the asset dissipation into bitcoin. Certain accounts after 5 years were not possible to obtain.
5.Tracing with experts costs increasing - 6 DH later!
6. FDR was finally the settling point, the Final Hearing told to take another year and costs to double those already paid.
I would advise many to be prepared for the worst, if you are dealing with a dishonest party. Gain all the applications and steps in the early stages of divorce, use any funding or litigation when needed most, at the critical stage, FDR & FH. Nicola says "get all your ducks in a row". The courts through paperwork out or ignore bundles that are not orderly. As LIP, the party who had no experience with the family law process let alone the complex directions, statements, spread sheets, files, deadlines and so on. Somehow Nicola will get you through.
Using Direct Access Barristers, do your research, call around, book them ASAP or they get lost close to the hearing if you have not confirmed, do not leave yourself in court alone unless you are super strong and clever with presenting and preparation skills.

Excellent advice and service

What an excellent resource the Wikivorce site is. I used it after getting conflicting advice from my solicitor, so "sacked" them!
The website is a wealth of useful information, as well as forms and links to other sources of information. Nicola, the allocated Divorce Consultant, was equally as excellent, helping to support me through each stage of communication with an awkward solicitor used by my now ex. The Consultant's advice included suggested wording to use in communicating with my wife's solicitor, as well as the Court when I had to circumvent the solicitor to get things moving.
I was also recommended a Direct Access Barrister, Mark Monaghan of Clerksroom, to represent me in Court at the Financial Dispute Resolution 1-hour hearing and who helped to negotiate a fair settlement on the day. I could not have done it without his help, so managing to save the stress and costs of a full Financial Dispute Resolution hearing (1-2 days in Court!).
Overall, a cost-effective way of achieving a fair financial settlement when direct negotiation with your spouse is impossible or too stressful. My costs were about 40% of my ex-wife's.

If I could give 10 stars I would.

I could not be more grateful for the help provided by such a skilled, professional and caring team during a very difficult divorce. Both Ruth on the main phone line and Nicola whom managed my case have honestly been life savers.

After speaking to several solicitors elsewhere and spending a considerable amount to receive advice that was contradictory at best, wikivorce put me at ease, made quick sense of the divorce process and consistently guided me through the options available.

Again, thank you, I don't know what I would have done without your support.

Practical and kind

After getting lots of helpful information from the Wikivorce website, I asked them for a fixed-fee consent order. Their first referral was to a firm of lawyers they no longer use, who took three months to get nowhere. But Ruth at Wikivorce was supportive, kind and helpful, and transferred me to Brethertons who have seen the whole process through. I am glad to have this bit of my life over and am grateful to Wikivorce for helping me.

Wikivorce

I initially came across Wikivorce whilst looking online for advice regarding a divorce. I liked the fact that they were willing to give advice and had a forum where you could gain information from other peoples experience. I had an initial call with Ian who gave me an insight into services that could be useful. Nicola became my go to adviser. She has guided me through a very difficult situation and has never failed to give sound advice. Nicola is very knowledgeable about the court system and was always there to provide reassurance. Her down to earth, friendly approach and ability to empower you has enabled me to complete the divorce process without the need to use expensive solicitors. I would thoroughly recommend the services of Wikivorce.
