Work the World specialises in creating customised overseas healthcare placements throughout Asia and Africa. Our destinations provide unique learning experiences in healthcare systems across the developing world. Established in 2005, we offer amazing opportunities to work in our partner hospitals learning unique approaches to low-resource healthcare. Since we started, we’ve proudly tailored more than 20,000 placements in low-resource healthcare settings all over the world. Encounter everything from unusually late-stage conditions, to tropical diseases. You'll also use, develop, and acquire skills when adjusting to new practices. You can be highly specific with your specialism, whether it's in Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Neonatal Intensive Care, or HIV counselling. Work the World’s placement planning and support service helps you avoid the pitfalls of trying to organise a placement by yourself. This gives you the safety, security, and peace of mind that comes with 24/7 support, and expert clinical supervision. While overseas, you’ll live in one of Work the World’s spacious, social, and secure private houses. Living with other students from a range of countries and healthcare backgrounds creates an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie like nowhere else. You’ll enjoy meals freshly prepared each day by in-house chefs, as well as the now-famous weekly barbecues. Free language lessons in the house will help you communicate and interact with patients more effectively to get the most out of your placement. Your clinical experience runs from Monday to Friday, leaving your evenings and weekends free for exploration and adventure. Work the World’s expert in-country teams will offer tips for sightseeing and trips that you can take whilst you’re away. You could go on safari in the Serengeti, trek to Everest Base Camp, sunbathe on tropical beaches, and explore ancient mountaintop temples.

It was a great experience in Takoradi, Ghana.
Felt like I was home away from home. The house coordinator as well as the other staffs were lovely. The hospital experience was one to remember, welcoming and friendly nurses and doctors always ready to guide in the healthcare practice.

I went to Takoradi with Work the World in 2016 and had such an incredible experience. 3 years into my professional physio/PT career, it still informs my practice and lifeview on a regular basis. If you're considering a student rotation with them I would highly recommend it. You may not learn cutting edge new techniques but the cultural impact is an irreplaceable gift that you can't get by staying at home. Everything was well organized from arrival to departure, I made amazing friends in the house from all over the world, and developed great relationships with the physio team at Effia Nkwanta. I definitely want to go back to Ghana someday and revisit their amazing, welcoming culture.

My time in Tanzania was amazing. Such a good experience for a 3rd year nursing student as we wouldn’t usually get this kind of exposure as a qualified nurse!

I traveled with Work the World and spent 4 weeks in Nepal for my nursing placement. It was the most eye-opening and rewarding experience.
I even had the opportunity to go on a safari and explore the local area!
The WtW team are really helpful and are there to answer questions and provide support before, during and after placement. The in-country team is there for you to help with placements, cook delicious meals, organising trips and offer friendly advice. They make you feel like part of their family alongside the other students in the house.
I would encourage anyone considering a Work the World elective to go for it, you won’t regret it!

I spent 6 weeks in Ghana and it was an amazing trip! From spending time in A+E helping treat people from car crashes, to home visits with the psychiatric nurses, to seeing elephants in Mole national park and walking on 40m high treetop canopy bridges in Kakum. Everything was well organised and the team at the house were so friendly and helpful throughout. I will never forget my experience there and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone considering going. I have gained so much from this trip- new friends, a greater appreciation of our health care system, and amazing memories.

The process was so easy! The website was so useful and easy to use, they set a checklist for everything you need to do and complete before you travel. This made it so easy to see where I was up to and to keep uni updated with everything. I went to Kandy in Sri Lanka and would recommend it to anyone. The service at the house, collection from the airport and even arranging weekend trips was great. The staff were so friendly and helpful and good fun too! They ensured we kept ourselves safe but helped to make the experience by giving tips for local markets, where is good to visit and arranging everything for us. The food in the house was always amazing, cooked by Shane, who even did cooking classes! And the weekly BBQ was always the best night of the week! The house was in a great location just a short tuk tuk ride from the hospital, right on the lake in the centre of Kandy with one of the famous temples a short walk around the lake! Be prepared for the work in the hospital as it is very different from in the UK, the staff have really good English and even document everything in English. However there was a language barrier with the service users. Would definitely recommend Work the World especially in Kandy!!

I really enjoyed my wok the world placement and it has been the highlight of my university experience. All the work the world staff in Philippines in Iloilo have been absolutely amazing catering to all our individual needs and everyone in the hospital has been soo nice and kind.

Incredible experience with the best bunch of people! I went out there by myself so I was already fairly anxious, but the staff put me at ease straight away and I made so many amazing friends out there. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Amazing trip!
Highly recommend Work the World to anyone looking to book a placement abroad. Everything went very smoothly and it enabled me to have a fantastic time but also learn a lot from my placement.

It was an amazing experience one I would like to do again. There were some flaws especially on the village experience which we did mention on our return and hopefully have been dealt with.

A brilliant experience that I would recommend to every student looking for a long future in healthcare. An opportunity of a lifetime that shouldn’t be missed
