Dirty, misrepresented, high priced accommodation

When you pay a premium price for a 4 star holiday you do not expect to spend the first few hours cleaning to make it habitable. This accommodation (Puffins Filey) was selected using a major holiday Bookings Agency (INGRID FLUTE also known as Yorkshire Holiday Cottages and Original Cottages) who advertise that all their properties are carefully chosen and assessed with very stringent criteria for awarding stars with high standards of cleanliness being a key criteria. Their 4 star rating states, 'Very Good to Excellent overall level of quality. Very good care and attention to detail will be obvious throughout'.
Throughout our ordeal at this property the owner was nowhere to be seen and our appeals for some kind of recompense have been stalled for weeks in the Agency's complaints process.
So beware if you consider booking Puffins. You should also think long and hard before believing the advertising of INGRID FLUTE/Yorkshire Holiday Cottages/Original Cottages.
This experience is why, people like us, are put off from holidaying in the UK - Expensive and Disappointing!
We were going to give this property 2 stars but with no hint of an apology or recognition of the impact on their customers it must be a 1 star review.

Puffins Holiday Let - Tired and Dirty - Not a 4 Star
You can see how the Puffins could once have been a 4 star property. When initially decorated and properly cleaned it may have been a pleasant Shabby-Chic holiday let. Unfortunately it has not aged well has has become just plain Shabby with chipped paintwork, marked and stained walls (what are those dripping stains on the bedroom walls?), patches of mould, and spider webs in most nooks and corners .
The bedrooms, upstairs, were very dirty with dead flies and other detritus, especially under beds and furniture and in clothes drawers. Thankfully the bedding was clean as were the towels. Downstairs was not much better with the rugs now full of dog hairs (we rolled them up to prevent the young children playing on them). A cheap throw replete with dog hairs now adorns a stained sofa. We did not have a dog with us!
The bathrooms were not as bad but there were still issues; dirty corners, a mouldy blind a broken foot pedal to a waste bin and horrible toilet brushes.
The kitchen was the saving grace and was the place we went to escape the rest of the property.

There are a couple of additional points worth warning any future visitor:
- the property has a Tumble Dryer which is a very good facility but the filter is blocked up and presents a fire risk.
- there seems to be only one escape route from the first floor.
- yard outside is a plus but is very slippery when wet - there is no slip warning.
- If you want to clean up there is a Henry but it cannot hold high power and we could not find any attachments. If you do use it there is a very bad smell.
- the TV is quite old and we could not add the Disney+ for the young children.

As it can be appreciated we were very unhappy with our stay at Puffins and would rate it as a 2 star property on the basis of presentation and cleanliness which is fundamental for people like us.
This has been very embarrassing for the person in our party who had chosen Puffins as they had spent a lot of time trying to choose the best place for 4 generations of our family (93 year old down to a 3 year old). The choice of property was based on finding a specialist Yorkshire booking Agency called INGRID FLUTE (was Yorkshire Holiday Cottages and Original Cottages) whose web site included a Quality Section saying that all their properties are carefully chosen and assessed with very stringent criteria for awarding stars with high standards of cleanliness being a key criteria. The decision on Puffins was made even though it was expensive. We thought that if the price was high it must be really good.
HOW WRONG WERE WE!
A good analogy of our experience is 'booking a room at a Marriot Hotel and when you arrive you are shown to a Travelodge next door'. At least in this scenario you would probably get some money back which has not been the case for us as yet.

Everything in the property was great

Everything in the property was great. The dishwasher wasn't working but we knew this before we arrived as company apologised for the inconvenience.
It would have been useful to have been given info on estate not been complete, poor roads and pavements and no road name .

Great property and location

Great property and location. Outside space and car parking space is so unusual for Whitby so this influenced us. Also it was last minute and so the property was half price. Near to everything but in a quiet, tucked away spot. Car was too big for the car park space but were given a car park permit which was invaluable. We had biscuits left for us which was a nice touch

Brilliant location

Brilliant location, steam trains galore, parking was a little bit of an issue. The property was clean and tidy, needed more kitchen equipment, be aware your dog needs to stay downstairs, and must not be left unattended, extremely difficult to go to bed whilst leaving your dog downstairs unattended overnight. We would not have booked if we new
this before hand.
Overall a nice place to stay if you enjoy steam trains and don't have a dog
