I recently had a deeply disappointing experience with this car rental company, and I feel compelled to warn others to stay away from them due to their unethical practices and poor customer service.
I rented a vehicle during peak season, and while I understand the need for flexibility with vehicle availability, I do not believe that the replacement vehicle I received was in the same category as the one I had originally booked. Despite this, I accepted the substitute car without issue, recognizing the challenges of peak demand.
However, upon picking up the car, the staff did not bother to accompany me to the vehicle or provide any form of inspection or walkthrough. I was merely handed the keys and directed to where the car was parked. No one from the company pointed out any existing damage or demonstrated the features of the vehicle, which I found unprofessional and concerning.
When I returned the car, the staff did however have the time to conducted an inspection and began making outrageous claims of damage. They pointed out alleged damage to the underside of the car—an area I would have had no reason to inspect at the time of pick-up—and also highlighted minor scratches on the hubcaps that were barely noticeable. It became clear to me that the lack of an initial inspection was intentional, allowing them to make false damage claims upon return.
Weeks later, I was emailed an invoice for over 200 euros in alleged damages, which I refused to pay as the claims were entirely baseless. Despite my refusal, the company went ahead and charged my credit card (Amex) without notifying me, roughly six months after the rental period had ended.
This situation is currently being disputed through American Express, but I find it alarming that this company can get away with such dishonest practices.
Im not sure if this rental company may be encouraging staff to fabricate damage claims as a means to extract additional money from customers. Whether this is a result of individual staff members misconduct or a systemic issue within the company, it is highly unethical.
I would strongly advise anyone considering renting from this company to avoid them at all costs. Their practices are deceptive, and they show no respect for their customers. Once my refund is processed, I plan to take further action, including filing complaints with consumer protection agencies.
Please think twice before renting from this company – you may end up being scammed just like I was.

Crooks DONT USE
Picked up the car from Pisa, the guy on the rental desk got very angry because I did not take additional insurance., he warned me to check the car thoroughly and not any damage with his colleague. I found at least 10 other bits of damage (it was getting dark) but they refused to mark them on the check form as the damage was less than 20mm. On return the colleague said I had chipped the windscreen which was nonsense, yes there was a chip there about 1mm, I refused to sign or agree, they now charge my credit card 837 euro for a new screen. This was just vindictive and fraudulent, hire with this company at your peril. This was not the first time with this company, when I got to the desk this time I recalled the same guy who previously was very rude unpleasant and pent up anger.
Repeated further attempts to charge my card. ADVICE as soon as your re aware STOP your card by reporting lost/stolen it’s the best way to stop any further payments being taken, unfortunately they will take the initial ‘blocked’ payment. Inform your bank and once payment has gone through report section 75 and the bank will help. Always take photos on collection and return.
Autovia Pisa - July 2024.
On collection, they did a hard sell to purchase bodywork insurance of 360 Euros; we refused as we were fully comp. When taken to the car we noticed damage to the car. We photographed the damage and the rep noted it (handwritten) on the collection papers.
Two days after we returned the car we received a bill for 765 Euros with photos that look like the damage we photographed. We sent back the photos and argued our case and didn’t hear back.
September 19th, we received a demand for 295 Euros. Two days later, our credit card was credited by 422.50 Euros. There is a huge discrepancy in these 2 bills and then the amount credited.
The maladministration in this business is incredible, not to mention the length of time you will be waiting at their desk to collect your vehicle.
We were scammed by this organisation. They told us we had to pay for extra for the age surcharge. But we already did this online. After calling the day after to Sunnycars who told us we paid for an upgrade instead of an age surcharge.
Lady at the Pisa airport collection desk was rude and ignorant, over charged for an item that wasn't on my booking contract as they had a outdated version, but would not release car unless I paid the charge, so I had to pay for an item I did not use.! Would not be recommending this operator in Pisa.
***Do not use this company at Pisa Airport***.
The person at the counter was extremely rude, he tried ten times to sell us the insurance and an astronomic price.
We didn't buy his insurance (we bought one in UK) and when we returned the car the autovia person tried so hard to find something wrong with the car. After 15 minutes he found an invisible small scratch on the bonnet of the car; we resisted and protested very strongly about the possibility to be charged for a non-existent damage and at the end we were not charged. It was very stressful.
So, in summary, if you don't buy their insurance they will scare you to death at the desk and push you around verbally; then they will try to find something wrong in the car to charge you and recover the profit that they didn't make selling their insurance.
I'd give them no stars if I could.
The rep was rude, aggressive and bullying. He tried to add an extra €100 for recovery and a total of €500 of extras on a 2 week rental even though I told him I had taken it through the broker Zest. I rang Zest who confirmed I was already covered and he was trying it on. Zest were great. He got angry when i refused to take the extras again.
On collecting the car the guy wasn't interested in inspecting existing damage with me. Said it was fine. So I photographed the whole car in detail.
On return he charged me for a scuff on the bumper. This was present in the previous photos. I emailed the photo. No reply. They then tried to charge me another €86 for the same damage. Again I sent a photo and no reply. I then emailed it to customer services and again no reply.
I will definitely never use this company again and would strongly advise against anyone else thinking using them. Autovia Pisa
When we arrived at the airport check-in desk, we were aggressively met with a sales representative who forced upon us their own excess insurance package for 250 euros. We assured the member of staff that we were fully covered by a third party and had paid for comprehensive additional insurance. The member of staff was very resistant to this and we ended up in a dispute for 40 minutes with the representative near refusing to let us check out the car.
We ended up not taking their insurance as instructed by our original insurer (much to Autovias disappointment). We were then given the documents for the car and advised that there were 7 counts of external damage on the body of the car (we had to press the staff member to print off the document so we could cross reference the damages). There was nowhere on the form to document internal damage.
The car itself did not match the description of the car we booked, although this wasn't a problem as we could all fit inside as a party of 5. However, we firmly believe that the member of staff purposely downgraded our car due to our lack of compliance in buying their extra costed insurance. We took photos of the outside of the car and upon loading our luggage noticed that the parcel shelf was missing a minor plastic attachment that connects the parcel shelf to the trunk/boot of the car. As this was still functional and the boot raised when the rear of the car opened, and due to there being no place on the form to document or dispute internal damage, our party thought nothing of this and continued to load the car.
When we returned the car as planned on the 21st of June, the person who checked the return of the car (the same person who initially gave us the keys a week prior) inspected the car's exterior briefly and went almost instantaneously to the trunk of the car to inspect the parcel shelf/hatbox. They held us liable for this "damage" and have charged us 240 euros for the replacement of the entire parcel shelf. I am not assuming responsibility of this damage as know that it did not incur during the time the car was in my possession, however, this is a gross over-exaggeration of the price needed to repair the damage. These parts are not car manufacturer specific, however I even located a car and model specific part needed online for less than 10 euros.
TLDR, in sum, do not use Autovia for your car rental needs. They are not a reputable provider and will try to hound you for every penny you're worth. They are repeat offenders and do not respond to correspondence or follow-up emails, they will take your money and disappear. It's worth just paying that extra small fee upfront for a reliable rental provider to save your time and money in the long run.
We booked through Ryanair, were kept waiting for over an hour in the Car Rental lounge while the assistant chatted for ages to a couple, two in front of us. Having paid £141, we were then told we would be 'upgraded' if we paid another £160, because, in short, my husband couldn't remember the PIN for his credit card and the assistant wouldn't take a debit card or cash or accept my credit card, even though I'd booked and paid for the car online. We were told if we waited till the next day while my husband found out his PIN, the whole contract would be null and void. The extra £160 miraculously made it ok to use my credit card. The car was fine. The return was fine. However we felt scammed.
NEVER USE AUTOVIA.
I rented a car from them with 19 existing scratches and dents. They are now claiming 3 of the scratches were made by me. I appealed by sending them a video that I took at pick up that clearly show the damages already there. They never replied to me and have charged me £800. Worst customer services I've ever come across. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
We will definitely not come back. The conditions regarding the fully comprehensive insurance were completely unjustified. We had previously booked with all-round protection under completely different conditions.
This is really not good business practice
BEWARE FRAUD!!
I have rented hundreds of cars globally. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Quick trip to Pisa, hired small car. Pickup took an hour. Declined the (overpriced and ineffective) damage waiver insurance as I always do - staff member at checkout got very short with me (I get it, they're on commission...).
Car had 16 preexisting damages; I added two more scratches/dents. Drove it a few days no problem, no incidents, kept in private locked car park.
Returned it- check-in guy IMMEDIATELY pointed out the 'forced lock' on driver's side. Kicking myself for forgetting to check it - it's the oldest trick in the book (remote key, opens door, so it isn't damage you check for when in a hurry, then they 'spot' it when you return the car). They're now claiming Euro 500 damages (for a lock on a battered Fiat Panda! It'd be funny if it wasn't criminal). I am willing to bet they haven't replaced the lock and are waiting for the next customer they can defraud. Am disputing this, and will report them to the police if they don't drop it.
STAY CLEAR!
EDIT These criminal gangsters have now taken Euro500 from a card I'd blocked. HOW?! That same card has also been subject to multiple other fraudulent transactions the day after I used it with Autovia, which the bank has refunded me - pornographic sites and random global spend - THEY ARE CRIMINALS!!
I returned my hire car on time. The man at the main office took the key but told me there was no-one to check the car. I took photos showing no damage. Unexpectedly, 1 month later I received an email saying that there was damage and €345 was taken off my credit card. No details or photos were provided. I have emailed the company and put in an official complaint but after 4 weeks have not had any acknowledgement or explanation.
This company should be avoided at all costs! The guys on the desk at Pisa airport were rude and unhelpful and having an argument with a customer on the phone as we waited. We returned the car un damaged and yet they accused us of scratches on the rear door! They sent a photo of the car in a different location to where we left it and days after we had gone home. How could they prove it was us? There was nobody at the desk when we returned the car just a key drop box. They sent us a bill for 292 euros which I informed them we would not be paying as it was not damaged when returned. They went quiet after a couple of email conversations and then a month later charged my credit card! The bank now say they cannot help with the transaction.
Be aware why this lot appear cheaper than others!
Apart from long wait to check in at Pisa airport, when we finally found the car, (not where we were told it was) looked smaller than I’d booked. Went back to desk but no one there. When back in UK worked out car supplied was group B, when we had booked group C.
After number of emails with agent Autovia not interested.
Then 6 months later they notified we had inadvertently gone into restricted section, (should have read signs better!), but Autovia wanted €60 for admin to notify the authorities of my details. Whilst I accept this is in their T&Cs, they are still not interested that I was given a lower group car to what I had hired, and so why was I still being asked for this fee, when they hadn’t complied with hire specifications.
I know now I will never consider Autovia in future, regardless of price
the worst car rental experience, and we often rent the car during our trips. the procedure to collect the car was very long, considering that we were the only customers. Never had such terrible customer service. the employee told us that we would have to pay extra to add the driver and for basic insurance coverage, while in our confirmation they were included. the employee at the counter tried to scare us as much as possible about the risk of accidents to sell us the highest insurance coverage, failing in his aim he tried to make us change the car for a more expensive one. the car was fine, even if it wasn't the one in the confirmation, but the interior wasn't exactly clean, the antenna was missing so it wasn't possible to listen to the radio and the car had strange squeaks. I had to ask to check the car again before collecting it because some small damages were not reported. This happened in Pisa, maybe other place offerings better costumer service.
