Stay as far away as possible

2 years back in England after 1 year in Spain, I left my account in plenty of credit. Last week I received an email threatening legal action if I did not pay the money I owed which I have no knowledge about whatsoever.
Not one person is able to tell me why and they refuse to close the account unless I visit the local branch I opened the account with. Or send power of Attorney. This isn't possible for multiple reasons. They offer no other possible resolution and no explanation to the investigation. Be warned.

Awful Bank

My spanish lawyer recommended this Bank and since then I have had nothing but trouble with them in particular trying to resolve the most basic of issues which is proving to be an absolute nightmare in trying to contact them. Even my personal banker in Spain is absolutely hopeless. Stay well clear

The worst banking experience ever!

The worst banking experience ever!

They constantly lock me out of my account. They treat my money as if it is theirs. I have a sizable amount in my account and it's now been 4 weeks since I could spend any of it. I am genuinely concerned that I might not get this money out, as the 'computer says no' for different reasons every day. I am locked in a nightmare that even Kafka couldn't imagine. I am in a state of utter despair, as they are resolute in the ability not to help!

Worst banking experience in 4 decades!

It is hard to know where to start with this bank. I have had so many issues over the last 4 years, there is not enough space to describe them all.
This bank is not only rude and aggressive, but also displays a level of incompetence I never thought I could possibly encounter. Even closing my account took over a week and three visits to the branch! Please do yourself a favour and stay well away from these clowns. They hire the worst possible staff with zero knowledge and experience, then give them zero training and proceed to let them loose on customers. The result? They cannot actually do anything. I don't mean they are mostly useless, I mean they literally cannot do anything (except try to sell you home insurance, which I am sure would also be a disaster).

Worst Bank ever

I have just read all the horrendous reviews and now feel so much better that I realise it’s not just me that thinks this is the most incompetent bank ever. I went into online banking to find that my account was overdrawn. A direct debit payment is normally transferred each month from Cajamar but in sept it was returned because my Bankia account had been blocked. I have no idea why and have had no correspondence from them at all. I did wonder if they needed me to do the tax residence forms so I downloaded them from online banking, returned them but the account is still blocked. I called customer services and explained. I was told I had to contact the branch which I tried for days on end and nobody answers the phone. I contacted customer services again and was told that they couldn’t do anything to help as it had to be done through the branch. I had an email this morning from a debt agency regarding my debt with Bankia. Funny how they can contact you about that but can’t answer a call. I phoned this agency but as soon as I started to speak, they put the phone down!! What on earth are you supposed to do if you can’t pay money in and you can’t contact anyone at all to communicate with. What a Mickey Mouse set up! The only thing I can think of to do is transfer my mortgage to another bank and just get away from Bankia ASAP. Cajamar are amazing and are more than helpful. My branch was also transferred to torrevieja when my house is in Vera Playa, a two hour drive away! Whenever you ask anything you’re told you have to go into your branch. They won’t let you transfer your account to a local branch. It’s outrageous, but I’ve no idea where to go from here 🤦‍♀️

I had a account about eight years,it’s not a pleasant experience. On two occasions whilst driving to Spain they have stopped my account because I needed to fill in a form,of which I had know knowledge of.On receiving my last bank card which also is a credit as well as a debit card, which I pay 14 euros a month for as well as paying for the account.I know when checking cash out of the ATM I hit checking account but came out of the credit account costing me money.I went to the bank at 11:15 and asked what was happening and to pay all the debt and was told I was to late at 11:15 come back tomorrow so by then it was the 1st of the month and another 30 euros which was a disgrace no help whatsoever don’t recommend at all try somewhere else can’t be worse then the bank in Cabo Roig

EVEN DYING DOESNT RELEASE YOU FROM THEIR CLUTCHES

My father passed away August 2019. The bank REFUSE, yes REFUSE to give the solicitor the closing balance of his account and to close the account. He has had arguments with them re the law. We have even given our solicitor power of attorney and they still REFUSE!!!
They have now asked for our solicitor to become a customer as they won't speak to non customers....... I'm sadly also a customer and they don't speak to their customers!!!! They are RUDE, IGNORANT, AND FRAUDULENT.

Probably the worst financial institution I have ever come across!

Probably the worst financial institution I have ever dealt with. Their online service is particularly appalling.
On several occasions I went to my Bankia online page in an attempt to change my home address and seek a replacement card. Naturally, for security purposes, there is a procedure to follow, including logging in with pin and ID number, thereafter changing the address on the personal data page. A code is then generated and sent to ones mobile phone, and finally one uses a digital signature to complete the process.

I completed all of the above and was told that the transaction had been completed successfully. Some days later, when I logged on, I noticed that the address had not been changed - even though the new address had been 'successfully' uploaded. As a consequence, the new card that I had ordered wasnt processed and despatched either.

I sent email after email - all to no avail, only to be told that I should call into my local branch - which is hundreds of miles away. I did call to my nearest Bankia branch who informed me that the old address was still on their system and that no replacement card had been ordered.

I tried to change my address online again, and again, until tonight, for the 9th time. I again received a text code to my phone, entered my digital signature - and was advised that the address had been successfully changed. Five minutes later - you've guessed it, the old address remains.

What a pity that a bank that is so efficient at collecting its 14 Euro per month banking fee doesnt show the same level of competence when it comes to customer service and online banking.

MINUS 10 Stars

MINUS 10 Stars - same as a lot of other comments - increased charges without informing; insist on going to branch to close even though can’t travel from uk as underlying health issues/COVID. No understanding or empathy. They are a disgrace and should be brought to task - but Spanish regulators appear equally useless.

Appauling Bank

Appauling Bank, especially as an expat. First they close my branch and move me to one miles away without asking. Then wont let me move to the one just down the road, or discuss account issues there - have to go to "my branch". Then, without letting me know and during Covid lockdown, increased fees by 200%, 14€ a month instead of 15€ a quarter. Plus charge again for a card, plus take random sums out with no explanation, just "Maintenance Charge" and cant get an explanation. The website wont work to email them or get a call back. The phone number they quote is extremely expensive from the UK and is permanently engaged or put on hold. Its criminal. My fees this year are around €250, haven't used the card, and total work from Bankia is pay elec and water direct debits.

€168 yearly charges.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis, heartless Bankia have decided to take a flat rate of €14 a month ( €168 per year) and another €28 per card in charges off their customers, some of whom cannot afford to eat properly.
With over 8 million customers, they are earning 1.6 billion euros a year in charges during a global pandemic.

Not even a one star...do not open a Bankia account!

Not even a one star, but had to give this overwise wouldn't beable to write this review. DO NOT OPEN AN ACCOUNT WITH BANKIA! Once you have an account with them you CANNOT close it without going to the branch where you opened it, in the meantime occurring monthly charges. They do not care if you are unable to travel to Spain, there is only one way to close the account, and that's in person! (Power of Attorney is possible in some cases but costs a fortune). I was trying to close it for 5 months; emails were either ignored or the same message over and over again! No, only in person! I did get an email which gave me a form to print, sign and return along with my bankcard, which I did. Three weeks later, the same message "we still cannot close your bank account unless you come in person". From head office to local branch useless. No empathy whatsoever. I have now closed my bank account but only because I was able to travel to Spain in person.

Worst Bank Ever

Worse Bank ever, no customer service, the branch never replies to emails, when they do they give wrong information, when they mess up your account its down to you to pay to get it fix which is a joke. 1 star is still too much for this bank. Raised formal complain regarding service and Bankia taking unauthorised monies out of my account, which was just ignored.

I am very disappointed

I have been its customer for 20 years and they suddenly begin to charge commissions to me. I have a mortgage, pension scheme, debit and credit cards, and they suddenly want more and more money from me.

Liars and cheats. Terrible service.

Bankia just don't care at all. It's taken me 3 months to close my account. After Bankia started charging €14 per month for doing nothing, and with a bunch of bogus payment protection and life insurance policies (which Bankia forced me to take out in 2010) coming up for renewal, I decided to close my account. They told me I had to visit the branch office in Mallorca to do this, but because of travel restrictions I cannot. Each time I called or emailed them, there was a different excuse. Even after getting a lawyer with power of attorney, Bankia still wouldn't let me close the account. Finally, yesterday, my lawyer was successful, but it's cost me €200. Bankia deliberately put every obstacle in my way to prevent me from closing the account (so they could keep on charging me bogus fees). Worst, most stressful exeprience of my life.
