We arrived in Edinburgh' Bunk Campers…
We arrived in Edinburgh' Bunk Campers after a surly cab driver muttered at us under his breath. The crowds had commenced and several groups were trying to get their campers. The staff handled everyone with composure and kept the stress levels down. After a wait in the rush, they explained everything and took extra time where we needed more info. They left a few things for us to discover on the trip but it was a great experience. The drop off was even easier. Get there early for pickup and dropoff. They have great people but customers seem a bit stressed. If you need explanations on something ask for it.

Amazing experience!
During our ten-day trip to Scotland, we explored the Highlands and the Isle of Skye using our Aero 2 Campervan. We had a wonderful time, largely due to the high quality of the vehicle and the incredibly positive attitude of the team. The staff was kind and very helpful. The camper was clean and extremely comfortable. Although we encountered some issues with the onboard computer, it didn't detract from our overall experience. When we returned the van, the team explained that the problem was likely an electrical contact issue between the water light and the electricity light. As this was our first camper trip, we were initially concerned, but we resolved it.

Considered being robbed by Bunk Camper
I booked a motorhome with Bunk Campers to travel to Scotland from May 7 to May 16, 2024. The motorhome is in great shape, very clean and very pleasant to drive. That’s the end of my positive experience with Bunk Camper.
Althought very polite, the cie is absolutely not flexible and offers a very poor client service. First, get prepared because the camper has no equipment at all, except a broom and the very minimum basic in terms of pots and pans. Nothing more. No toilet paper, no scott towels, no soap of any kind, nothing. I understand that renters are responsible to bring their own material but I would have expected the very minimum to get us started. One roll can make the difference between an ok experience and a fantastic one.
We landed in Edinbourg at 6:30 in the morning. The plan was to get out of the city to rest a little bit before starting our road trip. I had written to the cie a week before to ask if an early pick up could be possible. They said no. When we showed up at the pick up point around 3 pm, the staff was totally overwelmed and clients were waiting all over the place. I had to fill out the form and provide my driver’s license and ppt pictures for a second time because the online check in done weeks before apparently didn’t get through. We finally have been able to access our vehicle around 6 pm. Way too late to take the road. I asked if we could stay overnight on their grounds. They said no.
Finally, the employee told me that I couldn’t bring back the vehicle before 8 am on the return date. I mentioned that this was an issue because our plane was scheduled to leave at 8:30. So once again, I asked to bring back the vehicle at night the day before and sleep into it. They said no. I asked to open the gates earlier. They said no. I said: « No problem. I’ll book a hotel room, just reimburse the day I lost because of your policy. » They said no. The employee told me that I just had to book a later flight… 😳🙄
Essentially, I considered being robbed of 120 £ + the 200 £ I had to pay for the hotel night. So, if you are looking for a cie that has its clients at heart, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Broxburn depot
Broxburn depot - What a shambles
When checking in online for the pickup of the motorhome from Bunk Campers (also trading as Apollo), I requested a 1.30 collection (one of the options offered in the check-in form). I called to confirm a few days before pickup and was told 3pm. The day before pickup they called to say 4pm. In the event we left the depot at 5.20pm. Great start.
As part of our pickup briefing, I asked if we had a full cylinder of gas, and that was confirmed. A couple of days into the trip, I lifted the cylinder whilst turning on/off the gas, and it was clear that it was probably ¼ or 1/5 full. A few calls to Bunk Campers got me nowhere other than them saying it was their standard practice to rent out with a partial cylinder (!). In the event, we ran out on the west coast of the NC500 and I can confirm, having wasted holiday time visiting 10 Calor suppliers from Durness to Lochcarron, that at least that area of Scotland hadn’t had deliveries of 6kg Calor cylinders for between 4 and 12 weeks and the typical response from suppliers when I asked about these cylinders was a laugh and incredulity that I had ventured out potentially needing one. So 4 ½ days without gas, so we ran up a bill of £201 on unnecessary meals and campsites.
It beggars belief that Bunk Campers isn’t aware of a nationwide shortage of 6kg Calor gas cylinders, yet thinks it acceptable to release its customers into the wild with part-filled cylinders they are likely not to be able to replace. (FYI Calor is phasing out 3.9kg cylinders without producing sufficient 6kgs as replacements and have closed their Grangemouth facility and now operate out of Newcastle, so I guess the north west of Scotland isn’t top of their list when they have some cylinders spare).
At our briefing my wife went to open the fridge door and the handle came off in her hands. A technician was called who fiddled about with it and concluded “if you hold that part of the handle in whilst pulling that bit out whilst holding that other bit in, you should be ok”. It came off a few times in the first few days so we called Bunk Campers and were told that they had an arrangement with a garage in Ullapool so we arranged that they would post a replacement handle to them. That’s the last we heard of that.
Around Day 4 of our trip we noticed water coming from under the motorhome and notified Bunk Campers. Best guess was that it was grey water, but difficult to assess that, and not my job. Even if it was “just” grey water, I wouldn’t want to be parking on someone’s driveway for an overnight and leave them with a puddle of grey water on their land, so that restricted our overnight options.
One day the water took a different course, under the WC/shower wall panels, via the fuse centre and, because we were on a slight slope, into the side door well. Lovely.
We still don’t know what the problem was, but as the waste water indicator never showed more than ¼ full from that time on, I suspect the waste water tank pipe was disconnected. We therefore did leave waste water at random locations along the NC500, which isn’t something to be proud of. Anyway, no action from Bunk Campers, as usual.
A couple of days into our trip, we found dirty water in the cutlery tray under the sink. On inspection the sink had been pierced with a knife or similar and some silicon or similar had been applied to the underside to seal the hole; this seal had failed, so we then had to use the cutlery tray as a dirty water collector rather than for its intended purpose.
Driver’s side window worked for a couple of days, then didn’t. So no ease of communication with the person directing you into a space, fresh air, taking pictures, talking to people out of the window and other things an opening window would have been good for.
Provided these details (and other niggles with the van) to [Heather?] on returning the motorhome. She said she would get the manager to call me. No call, obviously. In pre-legal action correspondence they’ve offered a day’s rental refund, which doesn’t even cover our extra costs.
Without prompting, two fellow Bunk Campers hirers approached us and asked if we were having as many problems as they were:
A. Their battery had failed a few times, including whilst waiting to board the Orkney ferry, where they had to be towed on and off the ferry, not knowing when they would be able to return.
B. They had been upsold insurance when checking in which in hindsight they felt aggrieved about. Bizarrely part of the upgrade package included two full cylinders of gas, when they (like us) considered they would only need one.
C. We agreed that it would suit us both for us to buy their excess cylinder from them, but Bunk Campers had tightened the valve so much they couldn’t release it.
D. They hadn’t been supplied with crockery or cutlery so had to take time out and go and buy some.
Overall Enjoyed our time in the Motorhome
Good motorhome which worked well and was comfortable for the two of us to stay in with a dog (we hired the Aeroplus, quite a big motorhome but worked well on our NC500 trip). Good instructions from the stff when picking up although the queue was a bit daunting. We would have been happier to arrive earlier for pickup and were not tied to flight arrivals. A few dents and bits chipped off (and it turned out the leisure battery charging did not work properly) but nothing that affected our trip. Good value for money overall.

Friendly Staff but very bad Motorhome
The Motorhome we received was already pretty old, smelly and used. A lot of things were broken or not working correctly anymore, like the sun visor above the driver seat, the locks for the rear garage and the gas storage, a sensor for the water tap, ...
The only reason I'm rating more than one star is the fact that the Staff was super friendly and helpful. Though some of them could use a bit more training, i asked a lot of basic questions and the women who showed us the Motorhome was not really able to answer them correctly. When I insisted on fixing the water tap, there were two technicians who successfully fixed it before we left, they were pretty helpful and also had the knowledge to answer the questions i had.
Maybe I just was unlucky about the car I received and i can totally understand that a rental Motorhome is used, but in my opinion at least all technical things should have been checked better and work correctly.

Unexpected bad experience
To give an overview what happened during our stay in Schottland with the Camper:
- Waiting time for picking up was about 2 h, only after asking for a status several times we've been informed that the specific person who could show us the Camper is still in a training and we had to wait another hour
- Electricity switch was turned off (nobody showed us the switches under the seats)
- Employees were not answering the Phone, calling back only after 2 days
- Warm water did not work frequently
- Gas connection to heating showed error, only available if reseted every time (could only figure out how to solve it after 3 days with help of a camping site employee)
- Broken light on the right side front (from the beginning on)
- Plastic components in the Camper are lose (e.g. from the blinds)
- Toilet stinks intensively (we haven't used it)
- Shelfs are broken or lose (fridge and cupboards)
- Motor oil control lamp showing up after 3 days (had to buy and refill 1l)
They promised us to get a compensation for all inconveniences, but after more than 4 weeks, nothing happened.
So we came to the conclusion that we won't use and recommend this agency again.
Beautiful country, horrific company
I came to Scotland to visit the beautiful countryside with one of your motorhomes. Unfortunately I have been disappointed on numerous occasions. It all started out well. We received a call and were told we could come and get the motorhome at 13:00, instead of 15:00 as mentioned in the correspondence we received through e-mail. On arrival we waited for 2 hours before someone came and helped us. It was busy, and that can happen, but in that case don’t call us to come early. We could have spent that part of the day in Edinburgh. When we sat down with your (friendly) colleague he explained to us that you had an issue with the delivery of the linen. This meant we had to buy them ourselves “as we were going passed the shops anyway”. After checking we were “the lucky” (only) ones that did get the linen. When we arrived later that day at our destination we found out the linen had holes and blood stains in/on them. I am not sure what the hygiene level is that you try to maintain, but we were not really happy about that (same goes for the fridge that smelled really bad, and was sticky inside).
The second day we found out about the fact that the door on the passenger side wouldn’t open properly. The door and the grey attachment were loose, which meant I had to push it back from the inside every time we wanted to open the door from the outside (really annoying). I added pictures (picture 1, 2 & 3) to show you what I mean.
The third day I had a minor accident. Passage was small, and my side mirror collided with the side mirror of another motorhome. This caused the side mirror to completely break (your colleague made pictures on arrival). I was shocked by the incident and I didn’t know what to do. I stopped 100 meters further (parking of a hotel where it was safe), I walked back to find the motorhome I collided with, which was nowhere to be found. I called the number indicated in your brochure to ask what to do. I had a couple of your colleagues on the phone in a time span of around 2 hours, and nobody could give me a clear answer on what to do (someone will come/do it yourself/is it safe/time indications). These colleagues gave me the feeling I was annoying them, which made me feel really uncomfortable and bad. I decided to do something about it myself since I didn’t want to lose another day waiting, and taped the mirror with duct tape. When one of the colleagues finally called to be of assistance the solution was “send me pictures of how you taped it”, “ok its good, you can finish your holidays like this”. Bad experience.
The fifth day we noticed the grey water was not leaving the reservoir anymore, when we opened the valve. After some research we found out that this can be really dangerous for the inside of your motorhome (if it floods). The day after (day six) I called you explaining the situation. Colleague took note of what I explained and said I was going to be called back. While waiting I looked underneath the motorhome and I saw that the pipes leading to the grey water tank are completely loose and that the screws holding it all together are loose as well. I will add pictures in the attachment (picture 4 and 5). I also asked a motorhome fanatic on a campsite to take a look at it. This guy was shocked that the motorhome was rented out this way. At this moment I also realized that the first 4 days, every time I opened the valve to release the grey water, the water didn’t come out of the grey pipe, but from where you see the loose screws on picture 4. Anyway, this means we didn’t cook, and we didn’t take any shower in the motorhome from day five and onward. We were forced to eat in restaurants, and sleep on campsites with shower accommodations.
I received a call back 2 days (48 hours) later to ask if I still needed any assistance (?!). This was day eight, the day before we had to come back to your offices to return the motorhome. At this point I thanked the lady who called us for her time, but at 17:00 the day before returning the motorhome I was not going to look at the grey water disposal anymore. She said she was sorry, and that we would see if we would find a solution on arrival. This was a nice gesture, but the day after when arriving there was just a gentleman that looked at the car to check for damage, made a picture of the side mirror (which apparently will cost us 300 pounds). If I wanted to talk about everything I stated above I had to send an e-mail about it. It was not possible to solve this on the spot at the moment of returning the motorhome, because there wasn’t anyone with the right authorisations. The fact that I had to leave Scotland without handling the above also left a stain on my holidays.
I have sent above to Bunk Campers 24th of May, and I have sent a reminder the 5th of June. I have yet to receive an answer. Horrific customer service.
Nice experience
We had a very nice experience with our motorhome but we had to be recovered because of an engine issue. We lost 2 days of 10. Communication wasn’t easy with Bunk Campers and the recovering company
2 beds 1 cover
2 beds 1 cover! Cover even to small if you make one bed. We bougth 3 plaids because it was very cold and it’s impossible to sleep with 2 people under that cover when you have two seperate beds.
Very little cutlery plates & pans. No glass. You cannot drink tea and coffee from the same plastic cup.
Hugh towels, better give more small towells 60 x 110 in stead of 2 towells 100 x 200. So clumsy in small cabins with concrete floors. The mirrors arms are to long, put smaller ones on en nobody misses a mirror or have to drive around with everything hold together with ducttape. Is it better for the clients en better for the company and for the environment when all the campers, motorhomes come back in one piece.
From the start to the time we brought…
From the start to the time we brought back our camper van, everything went well with Bunk.
Although we would have like to have more material in the kitchen kit, like a drying cloth, soap for the dishes, or "Tupperwares".
The staff at the Edinburgh branch was very friendly.
