Craig Farm Religious/Halal Slaughter Concerns
Craig Farm has acknowledged but not responded to my email 2 Oct 2025 concerning my recent order, as follows:
"Dear Graig Farm,
I regret having to raise my concerns about the manner in which your animals may have been slaughtered to produce the items in my order:
The 4 burgers and mincemeat were from slaughterhouse 2100: Dawn Carnaby Abattoir Bridlington (aka Dundia Carnaby) a division of Dawn Meats. This slaughterhouse also delivers religious/halal slaughtered meat - rib, steak and mince - to Cosco Bracknell. It appears that slaughterhouse 5106: Dunbia Cardington Bedford was also involved in producing my mincemeat and therefore as for Dawn Carnaby also following religious/halal slaughter practices.
The 4 lamb chops were from slaughterhouse 7176: 2 Sisters Red Meat Ltd (trading as Merryn Foods) Merthyr Tydfil. Presumably this company is part of the 2 Sisters Food Group based in Scunthorpe which, with Lidl, in 2023 was implicated in an animal abuse scandal. The 2 Sisters Group is also involved in the widespread production of religious/halal slaughtered meat for the likes of Banham Poultry, Bernard Matthews and others. Furthermore, Merryn Foods supply both Tesco and M&S with religiously slaughtered/halal “Finest Lamb” and Topside Joints.
The 8 sausages and bacon were from slaughter house 4102: A H Griffiths Craven Arms Shropshire which is listed under the Halal Monitoring Services’ (HMS’) Red Meat Slaughterhouses EEC Numbers. The question is: why are HMS monitoring A H Griffiths? Likewise, Capestone Organic Poultry Ltd (slaughterhouse 7161), which slaughtered my chicken, is also listed under the HMS' Poultry Slaughterhouses EEC Numbers. However, in this case Capestone claim that although in the past they were involved in the packaging of Halal poultry, not its slaughter, this stopped some time ago; Capestone is therefore now seeking to have its name removed from the HMS list. Despite this, I think their previous link to religious/halal slaughter methods is despicable given its barbaric nature.
Finally, of course, as slaughterhouse 7191, you yourselves were involved in the slaughter required for and preparation of all the items in my order.
To be frank, as a long time customer of yours, I am astounded and saddened by your support for and use of the religious/Halal slaughter industry. You obviously truly care for the animals you breed and grow so why on earth would you expose and subject them to such abominable and indescribable cruelty? I know this disgusting industry is widespread - apparently 60-70% of supermarket meat is now religious/halal slaughtered (a national disgrace) - but there are still traditional, British abattoirs out there which are humane, ethical and caring. The question is: why aren’t you exclusively supporting them?
Further, my response to the reply from Craig Farm to my review is as follows:
I am appalled by the widespread religious/Halal slaughter taking place in this country and now you also appearing to be part of the problem.
Concerning AH Griffiths, you omit to explain why, if they do not carry-out religious/Halal slaughter, they are monitored by the Halal Monitoring Services?
Dawn Meats, Dunbia, 2 Sisters, which you use, all carry out religious/halal slaughter which has led to 60-70% of meat in supermarkets and many other outlets now being Halal. Ignoring this is also why you are part of the problem.
Stunning. From a legal point of view, the stun is completely irrelevant. “Stun" hides a multitude of sins - a 5 second electric shock is a stun as is a bolt. Stunned Halal: before being cut, the sheep or cattle are alive, fully recoverable and could walk back into the field. And this quote from the FSA 2024 Slaughter Sector Survey: "There are also a number of red-meat operators who stun animals after the slaughter i.e. they slaughter the animal and then apply a stun afterwards to minimise the period the animal may be conscious after the cut.”
According to this survey approx 200 million poultry, 80K cattle, 9 million sheep/goats (and 0 pigs) were Halal slaughtered in 2024.
Your claim that “ … none of the abattoirs we use practice slaughter by knife" is simply not true! You use Dawn Meats and 2 Sisters (Merryn Foods) who both carry out religious/halal slaughter, i. e., using inhumane methods such as a knife.
You have my email evidence that Dawn Meats supply Cosco Bracknell with Halal mince and steak; and that Merryn Foods supply Halal beef to Aldi.
Religious slaughter for non-Muslims and non-Jews is illegal.
Perhaps you don’t take as much “great care in selecting [your] abattoirs" as you should?
Until you stop using abattoirs that carry out this barbarism and stop being in denial about it, as are many supermarkets and other outlets, you will remain part of the problem.
