Car Rental Beware… My wife and I recently visited Ireland and rented a car from Hertz. The salesperson was friendly and suggested an upgrade to improve fuel economy. We asked about the added cost a... See more

Utterly disgusting company
Utterly disgusting company. After the other half turned up to pick up her car following a delayed flight, she asked to add on a CDW Excess waiver insurance for the three day hire (expecting it yo be around £7 per day like most reputable companies). Somehow, using the magic of an unreadable hire ticket, which makes no sense even when I tried to decipher it and had to contact the rental desk to ask the what it actually meant, they had actually added on a total of £104.36, yes, for three days insurance. That's ok though, she got a premium breakdown package. Utter nonsense. Enjoy your commission though as I have already cancelled another booking and refuse to use Dollar, Thrifty and Hertz ever again wherever I travel in the world. For the sake of that £104, you will never see another penny of my money again. Jokers......
extremely unhelpful…
Look at this extremely unhelpful response after I fly long haul with my 3year old into Ireland. There is none of this information clearly stated on their website to give you a heads up before booking
Please note that we are unable to install car seats into your rental, the seat will be given to you at the counter to install yourself.
Collection at the terminal is for gold members only, having looked at your reservation there is no gold number provided
Non gold members will take a shuttle bus to our off-site location for collection of their rental .

Irish company using the Hertz brand in Ireland
The car rental business using the Hertz name in Ireland is owned by Ryan Investments. While this company pays Hertz to use its name and reservation system, in my experience that do not follow the same standards at Hertz corporate locations when it comes to products, customer service, add-on charges, among others. They have never honored my Hertz status or global corporate rates for me. They regularly add on charges when you get to Dublin with no obvious notice. I would personally avoid this Ryan company. The also have attempted to remove my negative reviews several times.
James @ knock airport
James, the manager at knock airport helped me out of a difficult situation during a very busy weekend. I was so very grateful as I was in a stressful situation and he smoothed it over.
Never again
Never again. First of all, I booked the car online (€180) and knew it wasn't the full price. There were a lot of extra fees when picking up the car. For example, if you don't have €3,500 as a deposit, you have to pay extra for each day. I had to pay €260 extra. So, for a three-day car, I paid €440, which I consider a high price. Secondly, when I left for my trip, it turned out that the tax disc was two months out of date. The car's steering wheel vibrated above 100 km/h. When parked, I noticed that there were two different tires on the front axle and two different tires on the rear axle (illegal), which was probably the cause of the steering wheel vibration. I didn't inform Hertz about this right away because I wanted to finally get to my vacation. I was most satisfied when I returned the car and I don't want to use Hertz again.
Warning Do NOT USE I was incorrectly charged for returning…
I was incorrectly charged for returning the car with 6/8 full of petrol. I returned it full. I only travelled 90km in the weekend and topped it up at nearest petrol station to Knock Airport.
Hertz Ireland did not send me any email about the late charge and the first I knew about it when I read my credit card statement. I had to ring Ireland , raise a complaint. I still have not received invoice for charge or refund.
I choose Hertz as they are usually okay, no hassle car hire. My advice DO NOT USE Hertrz Knock Airport avoid the hassle and incorrect late charges.
Do not rent a car from Hertz or…
Do not rent a car from Hertz or Dollar/Beziers Airport. I was supposed to pay 936 euro (included insurances...more than I expected) for two weeks rental. Just back home now. I washed the car , filled the tank. I checked my credit card and nearly 2000 euros taken. The guy at airport busy with other customers. He spotted me waiting with key in my hand. Smiled at me and said "...you have a key ? I said yes, I can take it he said, I wanted to discuss the fuel gauge issue I had (not working properly) and see that the paperwork/bill was all in order. Hertz were very quick to send me a customer satisfaction email even before I had time to unpack and before the nearly 2000 euros was lifted from my account. Holiday makers using Beziers Airport and want to rent a car ... DON'T. ( Irish father and family travelling from Shannon Airport - Ryan Air to Beziers Airport.

BEWWARE!! Thieves at large AVOID!!
Hired a car from this bunch of thieves. ignored the CDW insurance from Ryan Air and took 2000 euros deposit. Plus Plus Plus.
The car cost 11.40 pd which was reasonable through Ryan air but after the first week they bumped this up to 14.80 Refused to issue invoices even when I took the car back to the airport on Aug 1st.
A week later got a ridiculous sneaky bill for over 600 Euros even though I had been paying as i went . Checked my credit cad and found they had sneakily taken over 600 Euros. The 'extras were laughable.' 'season charge' eh? of over £100 plus other spurious charges. £300+ in all. Have reported to my card holder for bank fraud. Have demanded an immediate refund.
Particularly dishonest is a person named 'M' at the North Circular Rd branch where I went twice to renew the hire. Cannot be trusted. Horrible slimy individual!
SCAM
SCAM - AVOID AT ALL COSTS - We hired a car at Knock Airport in Ireland, unfortunately not many companies there only about 3-4 as it is a small airport, but at all costs make sure you avoid Hertz. They will ask you for a "fuel hold deposit" of around 150EUR which they return if you fill the car up to full on return. We filled the car up at a petrol station near the airport (with a receipt as proof) and was told we would receive the money back in 3-5 days. It has now been 16 days and they have not returned the money. I have created a ticket on their support site and emailed them 4 times and not had a single response. To make it worse they made me pay for the fuel deposit in the same payment as the car hire so it does not allow me to dispute this amount with the bank! Absolute Scam, avoid at all costs.
They force you to buy insurance
They force you to buy insurance, even if you already have insurance provided by your credit card. They demand a letter of coverage at the counter after waiting in a long queue. The process of picking up a car is laborious.
I hired a car from Hertz with no issues…
I hired a car from Hertz with no issues at the time of rental. However, weeks after returning the vehicle, I was shocked to find a €96 charge on my credit card—apparently an “admin fee” for two unpaid tolls. At no point during the rental process was I informed about this fee, nor that I was responsible for manually paying tolls. I reasonably assumed the tolls would be charged based on the car’s registration, as is common with many rental companies.
To make matters worse, two months later I received a €75 fine directly from the toll company. Turns out Hertz had charged €48 each way (yes, €96 total) just to pass on my details to the toll company. That’s on top of the original €96 admin fee they already took from me.
This experience feels like a money grab. Poor communication, excessive fees, and zero transparency. I won’t be using Hertz again—and I’d strongly advise others to check the fine print and consider other rental companies that treat customers more fairly
Avoid avoid avoid
Booked on line through Ryan Air to pick up car with insurance for 7 days from Dublin airport. Charming young man, but bulldozed us in to upgrading car, therefore insurance went up which I was unable to cover deposit on the credit card I took. So had to take out their all singing dancing top notch insurance. We then had to pay for the full tank of diesel - bring it back empty he said. We did very few miles therefore a complete overcharge. And then the money I'd already paid on line, wasn't fully deducted. We were overcharged about £170 but they just said " you signed for it all". Yes we had, but under a bit of stress you just want to get off on your journey. Diabolical customer service. Avoid like the plague. How I wish I'd read the reviews first!!
From a very unhappy disgruntled customer. But I suspect they really don't care. They've got our money 🤬
Avoid unless you want to queue for hours
Booked a car for pick up at Dublin airport. Specifically stipulated that I didn't want to take a shuttle anywhere to collect it. Guess what? Had to take a painfully slow shuttle. When you get to the Hertz office, the queue is over 1 hour long to collect your car. AVOID USING HERTZ. PAY A LITTLE MORE AND GET A BETTER CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE USING ANOTHER FIRM.
The stated conversion rate was not applied, they overcharged by $110.
I was charged $557 in EUR with a conversion rate of .677 to CAD, and they charged me $935 CAD, which is just incorrect math, should be $823. They are just criminal fraudsters.
Doubled the price of the rental
My wife became ill and I had to modify our existing booking to delay pick up for 3 days. I didn't realise at the time but they had virtually doubled the price of the hire to have the car for three less days. Raised the issue through Hertz Australia and after the Ireland branch refused to budge Aus branch refunded the difference themselves. Hertz is a good brand but Ireland gives it a terrible name. Will continue to use Hertz but not there.
Terrible customer service
Terrible customer service. Crappy car, Never again Hertz Ireland
Dublin hertz bait and switch
I am a president circle member (their top tier) never had an issue before. When i went to the desk in Dublin the guy was like sign and away you go, as normal like every other time but this time he added extra insurance so i signed as normal and went on my way, upon returning noticed the extra 126 euros but was in a hurry for our flight so figure i would just call. 4 calls later never got someone used the chat, denied the refund was told you signed for it even though my profile has it all loaded as every past rental that I dont take extra insurance since i have travel and amex insurance that more than covers me, lesson learned ask questions read your information dont trust profiles and loyalty status and unfortunately the hertz Dublin desk. Btw rented from hertz in Belfast 2 months ago, was perfect signed and drove off, no bait and switch with extra insurance
Very good experience at Dublin…
Very good experience at Dublin airport!, Little up selling of insurance or type of vehicle. Car new and spotless. Easy return.
The only problem was an unacceptable wait for shuttles to and from the hire depot. Other providers were way quicker
Same as the rest of the horrid reviews…Expect FRAUD at the DESK, you'll pay hidden and duplicate fees - recurring incidents
Same as the rest of the horrid reviews - they take more money than the contract originally paid, they add 'extras' at the desk without asking or telling you, and then deduct them from the security deposit later. This time, in Germany, they added an optional "Roadside Breakdown Cover" that was never offered, discussed, or mentioned in the contract or in-person at the desk. They also charged for CDW and TP a second time, even though these were included fees in the original booking fee paid up front with booking.com. Neither are interested in fixing the issue, either; they both state we signed off on it, us against a dude at a counter who makes commission on 'extras' most likely.
Wish I could say this was a one-off experience - but the EXACT same thing happened a week later in Ireland, this time a line item of 'SUPERCOVER' (??) was added even though we had CDW and TP included in the booking, were paid for previsouly AND as always we purchased Excess Insurance with our booking, yet they added more, or you could say, duplicate, insurance fees without our consent. There is no other cover we could have possibly wanted or needed, and as before in Germany, it was never discussed, offered or agreed on; we just got charged after the fact.
So, if you want to book a Hertz car (which can also be Dollar or Thrifty, as it was in Ireland), you can bank on the booking costing you at least 30-50% more than you think.
ALWAYS CHECK THAT CONTRACT YOU SIGN ON THE TABLET AT THE DESK. THIS IS WHERE THEY ADD STUFF, THEN YOU SIGN, AND WHEN YOU COMPLAIN AFTER, THEY JUST SAY, 'WELL, YOU SIGNED FOR IT.' They make this 'contract' deliberately complex looking, with numbers all over, and line items in a foreign language, and to add to the confusiuon of it, it may be in a diffent curerecy that you booke in, so it's not easy to decipher what it all is, or what amount you paid, or will pay afterwards.
This is a breach of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act of 2025, specifically sales tactics and Drip Pricing! Abhorrent behaviour.
