I was invited to participate in the MiOP trial

I was invited to participate in the MiOP trial exercises when having a hip replacement. I only participated in the scheme for about a week before my operation but found the exercises really helpful in preparing me for my operation. Post op I did the full 14 weeks course, you start on very basic exercises which included lying on the bed sliding your leg left and right to help with movement then gradually you increase the intensity of the exercises and it’s amazing how a few simple exercises can help with a speedy recovery. When I saw the hospital physio he was impressed with the progress I had made. I will be having a second hip replacement in the future and would not hesitate to participate in the same scheme again.

MIOP App…

My name was put forward by my consultant at my first appointment to assess the MIOP app which was under trial. I agreed and in a couple of weeks I was contacted and helped to set the app up on my tablet. Everything was easy and explained as we went along. At first, I admit I was a little overwhelmed by all the information supplied but as I got familiar with the app I found it very helpful. It covered everything from what to expect on the run up to my operation, on the day of the operation and afterwards. Not only did it cover this but also wellbeing tips and exercises to help me prepare for my operation and on my recovery, which I have no doubt made my recovery much easier and quicker. If given the opportunity to use the app again I would not hesitate.

MiOP and my Knee Surgery recovery

My knee Consultant asked me if I would like to participate in the pre launch development of an App to assist with the prelude to and recovery from Knee surgery. This was my introduction to the MiOP App for smartphones and tablets.
In the lead up to surgery, the app provides home based exercises to prepare the patients joint for surgery. As soon as the surgery has taken place, MiOP starts sending a weekly program of physio and other information. The physio instruction is provided by video and accompanying text and three levels of difficulty are available according to ability. The level of the physio activity increases week by week until the end of the programme but the physio does not involve any specialist equipment. It is all based on normal household items such as chairs, stairs, a bed, the floor etc. initially, I was unable to tell if MiOP was providing any benefit. However, at my first appointment with the Hospitals Physiotherapist, he expressed surprise at the progress I had made and said I was about three weeks ahead of where he would have expected me to be.
So what advantages did MiOP give me:
Discipline - A home based online physio routine that encourages the user to undertake regular physio.
Simplicity - Easy to follow video and text instructions that did not involve any special equipment.
Progression - A series of physio routines that developes over time to improve my recovery.
Recovery time - I have little doubt that my post op recovery time was reduced by following the MiOP App.
