Home Energy Scotland helps people in Scotland create warmer homes, reduce their energy bills, and lower their carbon footprint. We are funded by the Scottish Government and managed by Energy Saving Trust. We work with people and organisations to help tackle fuel poverty and the climate emergency – both key priorities for Scottish Government (and humans in general). We do this through a network of regional advice centres covering all of Scotland, which offer local knowledge and expert advice on saving energy and keeping warm at home, funding options including Scottish Government grants and interest free loans, installing renewable energy at home, greener travel including electric vehicles and ebikes and cutting water waste.

Scott contacted me as he was concerned by what I had told him. He was very thorough doing an epc which i needed and explained clearly how an ashp system would work. He let me have a comparison of heating systems and gave me links to more informstion and contacts. I felt much more confident after his visit.

I had a terrible experience with Home Energy Scotland and Energy Savings Trust. While the people I spoke to on the phone were usually nice and tried to be helpful (although some clearly could not care les), the whole process was a colossal mess.
I applied for an underfloor insulation grant from Home Energy. This requires filling in an application at the EST portal. Getting to the portal required me sending a number of chaser emails and failed attempt. Once I finally got access, the application was straightforward enough.
My quote was fairly low (just over £500) and I applied for the grant only (75%). As the grant was under £500 I got a call that they have a new rule that they do not award anything under £500 and that I would either need to find a more expensive quote (i.e., spend more of the public money) or apply for the loan too. I did not need the loan, and the amount was under £150. However, I did change my application to grant+loan to meet the criteria.
Throughout the process, I had more issues with the portal and could not see any of my messages so had to revert to email.
The loan required a full comprehensive credit check, which is really laughable for the small amount, but I did provide all the detail. After a period of non-responsiveness and further chasing, I was informed that I had failed the credit check and my application has been rejected. Just for context, I have a stable job and excellent credit score, and have never failed a credit check in the past.
In the meantime, my quote has expired and the contractor increased the price.
In summary, this was a colossal waste of my time and energy, dealing with and organisation that is disorganized and completely impractical. It is really a shame to see that such a positive initiative is left to be managed by an organisation that appears incompetent. Even sadder is the fact that their job is to deal with public money.
I was “lucky” that my claim was small and I can actually afford the works. I can imagine the level of stress people are under if claiming for larger projects, such as heat pumps.

Home Energy Scotland contacted me after I had made a request to learn more. The lady who rang me spent over an hour listening to me, and advising me on what to do in order to reduce costs, and what to buy\ to do in order to ensure a warm home with minimal expense. It was lovely to have this lengthy conversation and I felt valued as a human being. A very positive experience.

I wanted to know some basics about switching to a smart meter from Total Heating Total Control with a radio tele-switched system. The person I spoke to was pleasant but all they can do is signpost you - in this case to my supplier who can’t answer any of my questions and who was my first port of call. I thought Home Energy Scotland provided advice. Very very disappointed at this very anxious making time. Not only could they not give advice but they couldn’t suggest any organisation who could help unravel this very complicated subject.

Friendly, polite mannerism, and impartial advice. I did not feel pushed for anything and was given an abundance of reading material links to understand the topic of replacing my old boiler to a heat pump, and add some solar panels too which is what I wanted. Great Government scheme should be taken advantage of.
