Thank you for your feedback. To clarify, we’ve never stated that our chessboards or sets are made in the UK. If any of our products were UK-made, this would be clearly mentioned in the product description. The UK hasn’t produced chess sets or boards on any significant scale for many years — most are now manufactured in Europe or Asia. Our descriptions are always accurate and transparent about this.

I was sent a chessboard carry case that was several sizes too large. I called the company several times but it was always on answerphone. I left a message with my number but have had no response. I do not want to ‘join’ Etsy to contact, I just want to contact Official Staunton to exchange this item for one that fits, so that I can give it to my grandson for his 21st birthday…now late, sadly.

Just to clarify — Etsy, like Amazon, uses its own internal messaging system for all buyer–seller communication. This means correspondence must go through Etsy Messages rather than direct email, as this keeps everything linked to your order and covered by Etsy’s protection policies.
It appears the incorrect size was selected when the order was placed. Of course, we’re still happy to arrange an exchange for the correct size. Perfect! The set I ordered was everything I’d hoped for. Some pieces were sold out when I first ordered so there was a small delay. However, it was handled very professionally and the pieces were swiftly restocked. The set arrived in good time after I was informed of the restock.

Disappointing
I’d wanted on of those sets with the drawers at each end and Parker pieces. The set is fine except the board is the wrong way round, with the black square right. I complained, but Staunton said it made no difference to the game and that some sets come opening horizontally and other vertically. Really! Be warned.

Replaced my rook for free, as a surprise
I saved up to buy a fancy chess set from here and writhing a fortnight, my dog had chewed up one of the rooks that had fallen to the floor. (She thinks things on the floor are fair game. We’re working on it.)
I searched everywhere that sells individual replacement pieces and couldn’t find one anywhere. I was so upset. And then I reached out to The English Chess Company/Official Staunton chat, and without even letting me know they were doing it, they put a spare in the post for me. It absolutely made my life. Really, really lovely and great service. Highly recommend!

I’ve got to give this company a good review. I ordered an algebraic chess board and chess pieces which arrived very quickly after placing the order. One of the white knights was damaged and I asked them to replace it which they did immediately by sending me a complete set of black and white pieces along with extra queens. Far more than I was expecting. Definitely the sort of company I’m happy to do business with.

Great chess set: One minor niggle
Great chess set [Classic Staunton Chess Set – 3" Ebonised Pieces & 50cm Anegre Board], reasonable price £125(?), arrived quickly. Came, unexpectedly, with spare queens.
One minor niggle: the case for the pieces was missing - sorted out quickly after an irritating email exchange. (They replied with an incomprehensible, terse message, but after "clarification" sent another message saying "We will send the vinyl box assp". It arrived in 3 days.)

Excellent quality chessboard.
I’m really happy with this lovely Chessboard. It is really well built and of high quality. It has alternate wood and mother of pearl squares which look great. It has small pads on the four corners of the base to protect any surface it will sit upon. It also comes with a sturdy storage bag to protect it when not in use.

Thank you for your review. The pieces you purchased are accurately described on our website, including their size and weight. Older Staunton sets from decades ago were often weighted with lead, which is no longer used for health and safety reasons. Modern sets use alternative materials for weighting, offering stability while maintaining safety and craftsmanship

I had a great experience purchasing a Chessboard set, with a discount code on their own website. Bringing a £65 chessboard set to around £55.
The chessboard was beautifully crafted, the chess pieces were not aesthetically fantastic, but for the price I paid they were amazing, the pieces were weighted and felt nice to hold.
