The BEST program for learning (European) Portuguese! Since I was traveling to Portugal, I wanted to learn some basics of real Portuguese. This program's excellent pedagogy has it all: speaking & listening opportunities, systematic review, podcasts with comprehension checks - all in a user friendly app that even allows you select areas that interest you. I loved Rui and Joel so much! Muito abrigada!

Complete beginner - OK?
The lessons are well paced and carefully graduated. The presentation is excellent throughout. You are not thrown in at the deep end, you are led there gently - and then it doesn't seem quite so deep after all. All of the material is professional and is very well presented. Lots (and lots) of reference material. Strongly recommended.

The video's from your caminho are great. Conversations with locals, and simple life as a pilgrim. Just a pity that you didn't start to walk from Lisbon, than you would have passed our house Casa da Lima. Maybe a new future project?

I just want to take a moment to tell you that your site is fantastic. I have been studying Portuguese for over a year with a tutor. I discovered your website, and it has been extremely helpful. I am a Spanish teacher, and I have never seen anything like it for Spanish learners.

What a fantastic website - been using it for a month and its so great!

As a lifelong language learner, and someone with a recent postgraduate degree in developmental linguistics (the science of first, second, multilingual language acquisition), I can say with some authority that this app is fantastic. I've been using a very well-known language learning app for years, and while I appreciate that implicit learning (inferring the rules without explanation) can and does happen, I really think that Practice Portuguese's more explicit and analytical approach is the way to go for adult learners. Also, watching video clips of real people (of different ages and genders) uttering the phrases is super helpful. I am currently using it to "convert" my knowledge of Spanish to Portuguese ahead of a trip to Lisbon! Muito obrigada, Practice Portuguese!

You can tell they have made this site with genuine intentions to really teach a foreigner the Portuguese language, not to make a quick buck! It's as easy and fun as Duolingo, but much more comprehensive and detailed. All online language courses should follow this example, it really makes it easy.

Fantastic app for learning European Portuguese. I've used Duolingo and Busuu to learn some Spanish, but switched over to PP because both of those apps teach Brazilian Portuguese and I'm moving to Portugal. After a week of using PP, here are my thoughts.

Duolingo felt way too simple. By the time I was 80% of the way through my A1 certificate in Busuu I was still seeing extremely basic phrases in Duolingo. Busuu is a fantastic app for learning languages, but I think I like PP even better.

PP gives you more explanation so it feels like a traditional classroom course. It also immerses you and allows you to save phrases from the beginning, as well as providing options to jump ahead if there's something you want to prioritize. For example I decided to learn the alphabet and was able to do that via a link embedded in one of the early lessons.

The spaced repetition, built in videos/podcasts/conversations, explanations that are helpful but not too long, the ability to jump around easily, the immersion from the beginning, and the forum where you can go for more help make this well worth the cost.

I purchased Pimsleur and Memrise and both these apps didn't help to learn European portuguese. The layout of the content is like what you would have in a class. I've been looking for an app like this for awhile

This is the only Portuguese learning app that I pay for, and it's completely worth it. I use other resources, including the Aprender Português: Português Para Estrangeiros series of texts, a live tutor, and various other YouTube videos and podcasts, but you can't beat Practice Portuguese as a resource that makes the drills you need to do both educational and fun. The mix of different native speakers helps train your ear for the ways that real people speak the language, and the variety of reinforcement techniques is just fantastic. Thanks Rui and Joel!!!

After 11 years of living in the Alentejo region of Portugal, I finally discovered the kind of language learning assistance I looked for the whole time on this site. Even though I am about B1/B2 level in Portuguese for most things, even the A1/A2 exercises of Practice Portuguese are very helpful to fill in knowledge gaps or even accustom me to how different speakers might pronounce the language. I really like the fact that many words and phrases feature live recordings of random persons as well as the clear pronunciation of one individual (for the same word or phrase. Those random person recordings also feature background noise similar to what I might encounter somewhere in town (the alternative recording is super-clean audio). These "noisy" recordings are actually very helpful for learning to recognize small differences that might cause confusion.

The general structure of the exercises and the excellent options of "Smart Review" (including a feature for a podcast-like audio review that can be subscribed like a podcast) is better than any of the many other apps I have used and is pedagogically superior to Duolingo. I'm a fan of Steven Krashen's language learning hypotheses, and Practice Portuguese offers me a great variety of interesting, comprehensible input!

So incredibly grateful I found Practice Portuguese! I started trying to learn Portuguese about a year ago (before a trip to Portugal) using sites like Duolingo & Rosetta Stone but since they only teach Brazilian Portuguese I was basically unable to communicate at all when I got there. That made me resolve to learn European Portuguese and this site is the only one I've found that does such a great job with thorough, comprehensive & easy to understand lessons! I love how easy it is to track my progress, the pronunciation help is fantastic, and I've never used a language site that has such wonderful grammar & vocab lessons. Finally, I feel like I'm on my way to learning Portuguese for real this time--thanks so much Rui & Joel!

I've been using Duolingo for years and I needed to move up a gear. Decide to check out Practice Portuguese. It took me a while to find my level which is B1. The lessons were made for me - just perfect! Well done guys.

I'm traveling to Portugal in April and wanted to learn the language. This program has exceeded my expectations!! 110% worth it.

I love the different types of learning formats and the lessons that explain *why* you use certain words/phrases instead of just repetition learning like other apps.

It is now almost three years that I am member.
The few times I went to Portugal, I really enjoyed it. Beautiful country, nice people, great and healthy food. nice weather overall. What can you ask more?
So I joined the course to learn continental Portuguese.
The courses are well explained, and enjoyable to follow. The background information about Portugal is also very useful. Keep up the good work, guys!

Of all the European portuguese apps I have tried this is the most comprehensive and concentrates on grammar the best.

I first came to Practice Portuguese through Rui and Joel's wonderful YouTube videos. But I wanted more, so I subscribed to their site. I've completed the first level, and I have to say that this is the best language learning platform I have ever come across (and I've studied several languages). They make it fun to learn, and anticipate almost every question, and for ones you can't find an answer to, they are extraordinarily responsive. They help you compare Portuguese as it is really spoken (really fast!!!), with slower, clearer audio, so you can hear the difference. There are so many thoughtful features, and so many ways to practice, that you can't help but learn quickly, if you're committed to putting in the time. Highly recommended!

I used to live in Portugal years ago but had lost most of my Portuguese, so I wanted to learn it again hoping to go back there one day (so much saudade!). I landed on Practice Portuguese after not having been able to find any good platform that teaches European Portuguese, and I've got to say it's the best money I spent recently. The website is very well structured and easy to use; you can learn in several different ways regardless of your level (study theory, practice, listen to podcasts, watch videos, etc) and I find the Smart Review essential to make sure you won't forget the words and expressions learnt in the previous units. Also, it's just a little thing, but I love the random pics appearing in the background when practising: they remind me of a lot of amazing places I've visited, and make me want to go back there even more. Can't wait to be in Lisbon again to practice in person as well.
