Our son missed the training event on 2/3/26 due to illness on the day. He was later told there would be some sort of catch up event which never materialised. We were called the day before the camp (1... See more

About School of Outdoors

Written by the company

We constantly asking the following three questions of everyone involved, and in every situation.

1. Is it the best it can be?
2. Has there been impact?
3. Have there been meaningful connections?

Underpinning our vision and these questions is a deep rooted belief in our outdoor education and meaningful experiences in the outdoors. This is borne from the directors own journeys through the outdoors, from novice, to leader, to champion of programmes and qualifications for others.

The benefits of outdoor experiences are widely evidenced, and our belief in its ability to build confidence, skills, team work, leadership and a greater love for the outdoor environment is the foundation of all we do. We aim to build programmes that offer positive experiences for every participant. We recognise that everyone has different needs; talk to us, and we will do all we can to understand and respond to those needs.

We care. A lot. We care that every participant on every single one of courses has an enjoyable and meaningful learning journey. That our Staff are valued and deserve investment, time and to be heard. We care about connection and belonging, and design our programmes to offer every participant and Staff member the opportunity to feel part of something with consequence.

We strive for excellence, but recognise that we are also only human. We want to be the very best we can be, so we need our participants, Staff and customers to tell us what we are doing right, and if there is anything we could do better. Belonging means being heard and valued, we hope to foster an environment where everyone feels that way. Only then can we be the best we can be.

Excellent training

I did a CPD day with School of Outdoors and I was impressed with the high standard of training and conscientious approach by the leadership team. I'd definitely recommend them, both as an employer and as a training provider.

Great experience but a few differences between groups

Both my children did DoE together but in different groups and had slightly different experiences. Generally both had a great time and enjoyed the expedition. A few differences were:
One was encouraged to plan a walk of over 20km while the other group leader said 14km was sufficient.
One group was encouraged to use their phones to ring for help, check where they were etc while the other group was told clearly only one member should have a phone and only to be used in an emergency.
Both children/ groups were told they needed to cook lunch but were not allowed to do this unsupervised. As one group was sharing a leader with another group, the leader did not meet with them until 4.00 to cook lunch.
It was sad that the children were not allowed to camp. I was aware of other DofE excursions happening the following week end who were camping.
Both children liked the group leaders - said they were good fun and helpful.
Thank you for a great experience.
