Great Job

A few jobs around the house, could not have asked for better than James. Helpful, kind and efficient, his work was exactly what we hoped for but don't always get.

Excellent service at short notice in very difficult comditions

In order to keep carrying out my professional duties I needed a very quick response to my request for my driveway to be cleared of very deep snow and ice. The guy who dealt with my phone call was helpful and said that in spite of their commitments they would try to help at the end of their working day.
The guy who came to clear my front drive of snow not only arrived early – which was much appreciated – but then worked really hard for two hours in very difficult conditions and did an excellent job with which we are totally satisfied.
Both guys are a great credit to your company and consequently I will be in touch with you on other occasions in the future and will recommend you.

Gas landlord safety certificates

I needed 3 gas safety certificate tests to be conducted on an urgent basis (same day). The service that I received was exemplary. The people I spoke to (Nash and Sat) were professional, courteous and above all delivered the service I needed on time and to my expilcit instructions. Highly recommend this company and I will absolutely be using their services again.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

This is the first time I've ever felt the need to write an online review but I have to warn everybody to stay well away from Skilled Handyman.

Appalling service from beginning to end.

We were told the work in our flat would take 3 days (building shelves in two alcoves and laying laminate flooring) but after 10 days, spread over nearly three weeks, nothing was finished (and the floor hadn't even been started).

Their website says "Guaranteed arrival time." Our technician didn't arrive at the agreed time once. He was always at least two hours late, one day he was six hours late and a couple of times he didn't turn up at all. The company only told us that he was going to be late on one occasion, and that was only after we had already complained about the technician's appalling punctuality.

On the first day the technician was two hours late, was there for about 40 minutes writing on his notepad, then disappeared to "buy materials," and we didn't see him again until the next afternoon, when all he did was drop off some wood and disappear again. By the end of the third day, when we had been told the work would be finished, all that we had were some pencil lines drawn on our walls and a pile of wood on the floor.

We had repeated promises from the manager (Sat) that "The work will be finished today," or "He'll get everything finished tomorrow," but it never was.

Skilled Handyman don't charge for the job but by the day, or hour. So of course they're going to try to con you into agreeing to three day's work which turns out to be a lot more, because they can then get more money out of you with their feeble excuses for the work taking so long.

After the fourth promise from the manager (Sat) that the work would only take one more day, he even had the nerve to say I was being unfair when told him I was only going to pay for one more day regardless of how long the work actually took to finish!

In the end, we sacked them. But by that point we had been charged just under four thousand pounds for nine, unfinished shelves.

We then went to Mybuilder.com, got a proper workman in, who charged us for the job not the time and completed the work, to a much higher standard, in 1 day.

On another point, I've noticed that all the positive comments about this company posted here have exactly the same language patterns and grammatical errors, which are also the same as those in the e-mails we received from the company. I wonder who wrote those reviews...

Interesting response from Skilled Handyman to this review, which shows exactly how much attention they pay to their customers’ comments. You did not install the laminate flooring because you were incapable of doing so. To talk about uneven flooring on site is irrelevant because Skilled Handyman DID NOT DO ANY WORK ON OUR FLOOR AT ALL. To claim this in your response is untrue and shows very clearly that you have no idea what you are doing. Skilled Handyman invoices for the time technicians ‘claim,’ they spend on site, not for specific tasks, so to say you invoiced us specifically for installing a floor is also untrue. Not one of the tasks you were asked to do was completed. None of the shelves were finished and the radiator covers, which were bought from B&Q by the way and not made by your technician, were not installed.
This company is incompetent and has a very lose relationship with truth. Please do not waste your money.

When Jackie Waithe telephoned to book the service, she asked for an estimate from our customer services about how long the work would take. The work described was as follows:

• Alco Shelving needs installing in the living room
• Desk shelving needs installing
• Wooden Flooring needs installing in the living room at the moment there is wood chip the underlay can go on top of the wood chip
• All materials to be bought by our technician.

Our Customer Services did not see site therefore could only work on average time therefore as a result an estimate of 3 days was given.

The actual work done was:

• Custom make and Install Alco Shelving in the living room.
• Custom make and install desk shelving.
• Custom Make and install 3 x Radiator Covers.
• Assemble and install TV cupboard.
• Install 2-3 x Metal in tiled bathroom.
• Install Wooden Flooring in the living room at the moment there is wood chip the underlay can go on top of the wood chip. There was no wood chip flooring. There was concrete flooring which someone has tried to get it ready for flooring. The floor was not level, which had to be levelled before underlay and flooring had to be installed.
• All the materials were bought by our technician therefore few trips to the local stores.

We also worked around the availability of Jackie Waithe and her partner. The work took 7 days to complete.

Mr Guy’s statement that we did not install the flooring and other work is not correct, the above work was done, invoiced and duly paid. Why would the invoice be settled if the work was not done as Mr Guy claims.

The response recieved from Skilled …

The response recieved from Skilled Handyman received today is inaccurate on almost every point. The fact that it has taken 7 DAYS to recieve a response at all and with no acceptance of responsibility - let alone an apology, is evidence of the absence of any appreciation of the notion of ‘customer service’. Then to describe ME as “abusive” after sending
a completely factual and accurate email detailing the events (which was only necessary because the phone is always ‘busy’) is legally termed slanderous. The issue has now been passed to my legal team. My final words for any potential customers reading this and the first review are that the terms ‘customer service’ , ‘skilled’ and ‘handyman’ appear to not be understood by this horrible company. I hope my comments will prevent other potential customers from experiencing the awful, time wasting, distressing and pointless experience.

TOILET CISTERN WAS'NT FIXED!

TOILET CISTERN WASN'T FIXED! I had arranged for a plumber to come and fix my toilet cistern which was slow in refilling. The plumber was very friendly but it seemed difficult. I keep a supply of parts as this type of cistern often gives problems so he replaced a valve and he thought it would solve the problem. I assumed it had but didn't try it out at the time. On leaving, he kindly said if there was any problems within six months he would put it right. Unfortunately just after I transferred the money on line I discovered the toilet wasn't working at all. The cistern kept running water trying to fill , to stop it I pushed the button to stop the flow , it emptied and didn't refill for some time. I lifted the lid gently and it wasn't screwed in to the column. It doesn't work at all now.
I reported the fault twice and was told they would call me back once they spoke to the plumber. On my third attempt I was told, as the job was a repair and they didn't supply parts I would have to pay again for a new job. I did not expect this reaction. I am very disappointed and I do not agree with this response at all and mentioned about the six month cover. I was apprehensive when the plumber arrived and I had to sign two documents which I suppose now, is a way of the company not fulfilling any come back. Hopefully I am wrong and the kind plumber will come back and do a good job that I paid for.

Ms Hall booked the service to repair toilet, shower and sink. In one hour, our technician repaired all the items. The technician informed Ms Hall that the part which provided to be replaced in the toilet was not the correct part but she wanted it replaced anyway. Ms Hall telephoned our customer services few days later and stating that the toilet was not working. Our customer services stated that under our warranty the visit would be free of charge if the problem is the workmanship. If the problem is due to the part she provided the visit would be chargeable as this part is not covered under warranty. Ms Hall wanted the visit to be free of charge and I understand she put the phone down.

The work undertaken by the handyman was a. Repair hole in en-suite ceiling. b. Reset downlighter in en-suite. c. Refix toilet roll holder. d. Reset main window that had dropped.

The work undertaken by the handyman was completed to a very high standard. He assessed the work required and finished every task within an hour. He was friendly, efficient and was a credit to the company. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for the expertise of an all round handyman service.

Overcharged us we said 3 hours was the max we could do so they stayed for 5 hours despite telling us this was OK. Door wouldn't shut properly and toilet seat was wobbly. In fact the seat had to be taken off as they had messed it up so much they jammed a screw in. No official quote given really took us for a ride. Partner has a disability and this has caused a lot of upset don't use them! Also they give you 5 days to pay the invoice or it goes to debt recovery! Sarcastic and aggressive replies when challenged. Further to their reply below I have an email confirming that they were OK with the fact we could only afford 2-3 hours so they are in fact calling me stupid which I resent never using you again unskilled handymen!

Lisa Smith booked our service to repair a door and toilet seat on time and materials basis. When our multi skilled technician arrived on site and inspected the door, he found that the door which was rotten and need replacing. No charge was made for this visit although as per our terms and conditions the visit was chargeable. The technician then went to look for a suitable door which again was not charged for. The cost of the door was agreed with the Lisa Smith’s husband. The door was ordered. The door was collected for installation; again no charge was made to Lisa Smith for collection of the door.

The old door had to be taken off. The door furniture from the old door was taken off as Lisa Smith wanted it to be put on on the new door. The new door had to be trimmed to make it fit, undercoated, gloss painted, and the door furniture put. The toilet seat had rusted screws and bolts which were replaced from stock in the van which were not charged to Lisa Smith.

The work did take 5 hours but at no point Lisa Smith put limit of 3 hours, if she had we would have asked her authorisation before continuing which we are quite used to doing for example for property managing agents where they have set budget for the repairs.
At no point Lisa Smith has complained to us about the door or the toilet seat, if she had we would fixed both items free of charge as the work is covered by our 6 months guaranty.

Time waster and did not finish the job

The job requested was to change a standard lock and hang a sign. The handyman quoted that the job would take no more than 3 hours. The company charged 7 hours.
The job was in the basement of the building so we did not keep track of the handyman's comings and goings. Additionally, the work was left unfitted with a number of holes in the door not made good. The handyman said he would return but did not do so. At £65 per hour, I would have expected a professional.
The company did not want to know. Will not use again. Not recommend at all.

The service booked was “Put sign. Change lock on disabled toilet. Client to supply lock”. The charging structure was made clear to client at the time of the booking. A booking confirmation email was sent with terms and conditions.

When the technician arrived on site he found that was that a large sign was to be installed at the top of the building. It was in fact 2 persons job. The majority of the time was spent taking the sign up the building and then installing it in a secure way.

The lock client supplied did not match the existing lock, therefore modification had to me made to fit the lock. The technician had to leave and therefore was not able to make good. The client was contacted by phone and email to make appointment for technician to return to make good but the she did not respond. If required we have email evidence of this.

The client was invoiced for 6 hours not 7 as she claims. Again if required we can evidence this, I suggest the client checks the invoice which was sent to her.

Unacceptable, unreasonable, rude, unprofessional AND reeking of alcohol

The schedule of works was incomplete, the work was sub-standard, the handyman kept going off and came back reeking of alcohol after the 3rd ‘break’, refused to leave and insisted he was able to complete the works, begging me not to tell the boss. He even drove over his own ladder whilst leaving, disturbing the neighbours. That’s how skilled he was.

Paint stains were left on my carpet and I am left with extra work and stress to make good the sub-standard work carried out by Skilled Handyman Services as well as a carpet cleaning bill.

The 'skilled' handyman took over 7 hours to complete work that another professional handyman could do in around 60- 90 minutes. He took many 40 minute breaks, going off somewhere. He demanded I pay him £25 in hand, cash, explaining he would put down for less hours if I did, demanded lunch, cigarettes and a cup of tea every 30 minutes. Is it a wonder the work was grossly sub-standard when he demonstrated such an unprofessional attitude and behaviour.

Despite e mails, phone calls and photographic evidence, the company has refused to acknowledge any of their employees behaviour, apologise or suggest any compensation. They continue to demand full payment for work not completed and blame me for not telling him to leave! (Which I did, but he kept insisting he could complete the job and didn’t want to get into trouble with the boss. He asked me to collude with him and not to tell the company then that he had asked for cash in hand.)

Does it take a skilled handyman 7 hours to:

remove and put a new seal around a small shower (approx 120 cm by 80),

paint x 2 small shelves (approx 80 cm x 20 ) without preparing the surface, ONE coat, matt, when it should have been gloss.

paint a wall (approx 200 cm x 250 cm) without preparing the surface, ONE coat,

paint another small area (approx 100 cm x 80cm), ONE coat

fill x 4 small holes (1cmx 1cm)?

Paint a 3m skirting broad and coving

Well, apparently, Bal in the finance department does.

I have asked for a responsible estimate, but again they refuse to co operate.

I feel have been bullied and harassed to make the full payment. Sometimes in life, you have to pick your battles.

The work booked to be done was:

• Bathroom shower ceiling needs repainting( roughly only 10cm).
• Curtain rails holes need filing and re painting.
• Coving has marks and needs re painting.
• Patches on walls around the house that need re painting.
• 2x bathrooms wooden shelving needing glossing.
• Couple of window seals around house needs re glossing.

The above work would not have taken 6 to 7 hours neither it would have taken 60 to 90 minutes as Kay states. The technician was on site for 7 hours as the Kay carried on giving him extra work and would not let him leave. When all the work was completed she refused to sign his work sheet.

After we have invoiced for the work, we received email accusing the technician of being drunk, bad workmanship and taking long breaks. If we did not relook at the invoice she will give us bad reviews and report us to Trading Standards.

Drink before and on the job is a very serious offence and in breach of technician’s employment contract which leads to instant dismissal. We take very very seriously not only because of the impact on our clients; also they drive company van putting the public at risk. Our reply to Kay’s very allegation was “The technician Ian Booth who worked for you has categorically denied that he was not drunk. He did not drink before, during and after the job. He also has stated that in fact it was you who would not let him leave by giving him more jobs. All Kay had to do was call our customer services and we have withdrawn him immediately.

Our technicians or I believe any other professional tradesman would not have demand £25.00 for lunch, cigarettes and cup of tea every 30 minutes. If this was happening all Kay had to do was to pick up the phone call our customer services and let them know what was happening, that she was not happy. We would have withdrawn the technician immediately. Our technicians are allowed two short 15 minutes breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and half hour lunch. That is only if they are booked for the day. They get paid for short breaks but not for lunch. They practice this.

Regarding the substandard work, we offered to come and inspect the work and address any of Kay’s concerns free of charge but she has not accepted the offer. Our email to her was “My apology for the delay Ian was off sick and I needed to interview him before I came back to you. The work is guaranteed for six months, therefore can be rectified. If you wish Nash Bhatti is able to visit you to inspect the standard work and what is needed to rectify any issues with the workmanship which will of course be free of charge”.

Extremely unreliable three times they failed to turn up. Wasting precious annual leave. First occasion they sent an e-mail confirming it was booked in but no one turned up. Trying to correct the mistake they booked for a Monday night once again no one turned up and finally booked in for Saturday and again no one turned up. An absolute waste of my time I have cancelled the job and will be looking elsewhere for someone more reliable.
