Premium product but poor service
Ahead of a reunion of friends I ordered a large porchetta from Swaledale on 3rd October. I much prefer to cook meat that has not been frozen and their products are premium (quality and price). Where a company sells a premium product it is a reasonable expectation that the customer service will match that.
I ordered this joint for delivery 24 hours ahead of when it was needed leaving a bit of contingency time.
Swaledale became aware a few days before this order was due for despatch that they had a transportation issue (strike by drivers in their chosen provider). It is not their fault that there was a strike, but it is their responsibility to ensure service recovery. Instead of following what I would hope would be a well considered contingency plan and immediately contracting another company to get this food to us on time, they kept going with their contractor and crossed their fingers.
The joint did not arrive on the day booked for delivery and one day later, on the day of the event, with no contact from Swaledale, I spoke to the distribution centre for the delivery company and was given weak reassurances. By 4pm it was clear that we would be let down.
Swaledale is an online business selling fresh meat. That should necessitate that they retain the ability to respond to transport and delivery issues in an agile way. This style of contingency may involve a little bit of extra cost - but this is not a cheap product. Having these measures in place is how you keep customers.
The other way you keep customers is by acknowledging and responding to complaints. I made reasonable complaint to you a week ago and have heard nothing.
All in all, a very disappointing set of outcomes for a customer of many years.

Your parcel was due for delivery on Thursday 9 October and, unfortunately, was caught up in the recent DPD disruption. This was not an official strike by DPD employees but a refusal of service by self-employed drivers, and there was no advance communication from DPD about the issue. All parcels, including yours, left our building on Wednesday as planned, but were delayed once in DPD’s network.
Even DPD themselves were initially unsure of the knock-on effects, and it became clear on the Thursday that there was a growing backlog, estimated to take up to three days to clear. They assured us that perishables in the system are always prioritised, as DPD works with many fresh-food businesses.
We appreciate how frustrating this must have been, but I hope you can understand that for perishable products we can’t simply switch couriers at short notice. Each courier must be fully approved for chilled, time-sensitive goods and integrated with our packing and tracking systems. In rare situations like this, we are unfortunately at the mercy of external disruption.
Every online business occasionally faces challenges from courier delays, severe weather, or vehicle breakdowns, but we do everything possible to minimise the impact on our customers. Your feedback is important and will help us strengthen our contingency planning where possible.

Got 2 bad cured ox tongues from them, threw them in trash, put I star review for that specific item, guess what - that review still not live on their site, pretty sure it will be never. And I was wondering - why there only five/four stars reviews on their web site, not a miracle when you block all negative experience reviews.

Stunning quality - worth every penny.
Ordered a porchetta and a cote de bouef. We had the porchetta and quality of meat and pork sausage stuffing was stunning. Worth every penny. Best pork I’ve ever had. Delivery was also slick and meat was packaged very well and sustainably. I will be back.
