Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 150 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the company's subscription practices, particularly regarding the cancellation of "lifetime" memberships without prior notice or explanation. Customers also reported issues with the service itself, finding it unreliable and often not working as expected, especially with streaming services. The customer service was frequently described as unresponsive and unhelpful, leaving many feeling ignored and frustrated. The primary concern for many customers revolved around the company's decision to revoke lifetime subscriptions after an acquisition, with people feeling that the company failed to honor previous agreements. This led to a strong sense of betrayal and a lack of trust in the company's commitment to its customers.

Badly handled

Had a lifetime account with this company. Then all of a sudden one day my VPN stopped working. Emailed tech support and received a reply saying all lifetime accounts had been discontinued. This was without any notice whatsoever. VPN said they had notified customers of lifetime accounts via email, and this may be in my spam folder. No such email was received. To add insult to injury, I now keep receiving what I would describe as marketing emails asking me to sign up to a new subscription service.

Edit Dear VPN, thanks for responding to my feedback. I would like to point out that I have now had my Gmail address for many years. Long before VPN sent the receipt for my lifetime subscription to this email address in 2018 therefore not aware of why there was a problem contacting me before disconnection. If there had been just one follow-up email from VPN encouraging former lifetime subscriptions to take out a payment plan, I would have not bothered with this review, but multiple?

Thanks for the follow-up, Michael — and you're absolutely right to question the difference.

To clarify: it’s not the same thing to send a one-off transactional email after purchase (which works fine), versus sending a mass email blast to an aged database 5+ years later. That blast triggered a 20%+ bounce rate, which caused our delivery provider to temporarily suspend sending — and by then, many users had already missed the original message.

We later moved to MailJet and verified the list using EmailListVerify to avoid repeat issues, but by then the damage was done. That’s not an excuse — it’s just the technical reality behind why some people, like you, never got the notice.

We understand how this all feels. We tried to make the best of a flawed situation, but clearly fell short in the execution. Thanks again for calling it out.

Original Answer: ⬇️

Thanks for your message — and we understand why this left such a bad impression.

We did attempt to notify users by email, but due to the age of the list, over 20% of messages bounced, and many others were flagged as spam. We later moved providers and verified the database to try again, but clearly it still didn’t reach everyone in time — and for that, we take responsibility.

As for the follow-up email, we understand it may feel like a marketing push, but it was genuinely intended to explain what happened clearly and transparently — and to offer a path forward, not pressure anyone.

We appreciate the time you spent with VPN Secure, and we're sorry this is how it ended.

another lifetime user here cut off…

another lifetime user here cut off without warning.

To add insult to injury, they just sent a long winded email doubling down saying 'if you're still there, please pay us again' or words to that effect.

Their way of saying "if you're still there, this one's for you" is actually just an opportunity to buy another subscription.

Their bought something - claimed to have no knowledge of the lifetime subs, then just cut us off.

Disgusting. Avoid like the plague.

Even the reply below reals for chatgpt Bullwinkle. The not 'running away' they're referring to, is deactivating all of our accounts without so much as a warning. It's truely shameful.

Thanks for the follow-up — and for calling us out directly.

You're right to say the way this played out doesn’t inspire trust. The deactivation came far too abruptly, and while we did send advance notice, it's clear it didn’t reach many of the people it should’ve. That failure is on us.

We’ve never claimed this was handled perfectly — only that we’re trying to face the fallout transparently. That means showing up, even when we’re being called out, and responding to frustration with honesty rather than defensiveness or silence.

No excuses — just a tough situation we’ve tried, however imperfectly, to handle head-on.

— VPN Secure Team

Original Answer: ⬇️

We understand how that email may have come across — and we’re not surprised it landed poorly.

Our intent wasn’t to pretend nothing happened or to spin this into a sales pitch. We sent that message because many users told us they never received the original notice — and we wanted to make sure everyone knew what happened, even if it was too late to fix it.

We did inherit the infrastructure, but not the contracts, customer records, or payments. Still, we kept Lifetime accounts active for two extra years — not because we had to, but because we felt it was the least we could do.

We know that doesn’t make it right in your eyes. But we’re still here, answering honestly, and not running from the backlash.

We hear your anger — and we won’t try to convince you otherwise.

What we can say is this: we didn’t inherit any legal agreements, contracts, or payments from the previous company. This wasn’t a full acquisition — it was an asset-only deal. Still, we kept Lifetime accounts running for two extra years at our own cost.

You don’t have to forgive us. But we’re not hiding, and we’re not pretending this didn’t hurt people. We’re just being upfront — even when it costs us.

Thanks for your feedback — and we get why it feels that way.

To clarify: all active paid subscribers had to cancel and re-subscribe under the new company because we didn’t receive access to the previous merchant accounts (PinPayments or PayPal). No one was “grandfathered in” unfairly — except Lifetime users, who actually did continue to get access for two more years without interruption or payment, entirely at our cost.

That’s not us picking and choosing. It was a messy handover, and we tried to handle it the best we could — even if it didn’t land right.

Had lifetime subscription had it…

Had lifetime subscription had it cancelled. They claimed to of sent two emails in regards to the life subscription cancellation. Due to the amount of important emails going in to my spam I check mine once month at least and I saw nothing over 24 months. Reading some of the responses they claim 20% bounce back rate at this point don't you realise you need to put a message else where?! You put of put a pop up or banner in the app or on the website.

Also claimed they know nothing about lifetime subscription model. Ever heard of something called Google? Before buying I would of at least spent a good day researching what I was buying on the web as it's a web based product.

I find first and only email I've seen to be very poor email or explanation. As you said you kept the lifetime subscription running for a good 24 months at your cost. So you had time to work out a better way of dealing with this instead of shooting your self in the foot.

I completely get what you have done and why but the way you have handled it is the problem. If you had dealt with this more professionally my sympathy levels what had been better and more understanding. But I think your attitudes and the way you have dealt with it has done you more damage then anything.

In regards to the actual VPN service it was slow and mean very slow compared to the other one I use which is BulletVpn who I get just below my internet service speed of 500. Also the customer service of bulletvpn is incredible ask them for made files no issues to I could cover my network no issue. The team there are on the top of there game.

I wish the new owners good luck but I think you have done more damage than good at this point and I hope you learnt some valuable lessons.

Thanks for laying this out so clearly — your message is one of the more thoughtful critiques we’ve received, and we genuinely appreciate it.

You're absolutely right that we should’ve communicated earlier and more effectively. Relying on email alone — especially with an old list, high bounce rate, and no redundancy like app banners or login prompts — was a huge oversight. We missed the opportunity to get ahead of this before frustration boiled over, and we take responsibility for that.

As for the decision itself: we didn’t know about the Lifetime Deals when we acquired the infrastructure, and we weren’t given contracts, payment records, or access to the prior merchant accounts. But none of that excuses the poor handling of the situation after we found out. We tried to do the right thing by keeping the accounts active for two more years, but you're right — we should’ve used that time to develop a clearer, more respectful path forward.

We’re not here to dodge blame. This was mishandled, and we’re learning that the hard way.

We’re grateful you took the time to write this — and we wish you the best with BulletVPN. They sound like they’re doing it right.

We understand why that feels like a betrayal — and we know no amount of explanation can undo that disappointment.

To clarify: we didn’t acquire the company itself, just its infrastructure and software — no contracts, no revenue, no customer payment data. That’s why we couldn’t “honor” deals we weren’t legally or financially part of. But we still kept those accounts active for two more years at our own cost.

It’s not the outcome you wanted, and we understand why you’re walking away. But we’ve tried to handle this with transparency — even if the decision remains unpopular.

Do not trust this company. I'm yet another customer who's had their lifetime account suddenly revoked. If you buy out the company you should honour existing customers. You’re right that we’re using the infrastructure and the brand. But the deal was an asset-only acquisition — not a company buyout. We didn’t receive the contracts, revenue, or customer payment data. That means no legal obligation to honor past deals — but we chose to keep Lifetime accounts active for two more years anyway, fully at our cost.

We know that doesn’t make it feel any less like a betrayal, and we accept that. But we’re not hiding from criticism — we’re here, owning the fallout, and doing our best to rebuild something better.

We're not here to convince you it wasn’t a breach of trust. From your perspective, it absolutely was. We didn’t cancel Lifetime accounts lightly, and we know how much trust was lost in the process. Our goal wasn’t to disrespect anyone — it was to keep the service running after inheriting a situation we weren’t fully prepared for. That’s not an excuse, just the truth.

The Biggest Middle Finger You Could Give Your Customers

I, like many others, woke up to find my lifetime subscription wiped without warning. No email, no explanation ... just gone. If this is how the new owners treat loyalty, then it’s clear they don’t value having customers at all. A cash grab at the cost of trust and reputation. I’ve already moved to another provider, and I suggest everyone else do the same. To the new owners: enjoy your short-term profit; they’ll be the only thing left when your user base vanishes.

We hear you — and you're right that this felt like a slap in the face to many Lifetime users.

To clarify, we did send emails (two, in fact), but with a contact list that was years out of date, bounce rates above 20%, and spam filtering issues, many didn’t receive them. That’s on us — and we take full responsibility for that failure in communication.

As for wiping accounts: we didn’t do it overnight. We kept every Lifetime account active for two full years after the acquisition, without receiving any revenue from those subscriptions. That doesn’t make it feel better — we get that — but it wasn’t a sudden cutoff or a scheme to squeeze more money out of people.

We knew this would hurt, and we understand why many customers left. We’re not here to defend every decision — just to own it.

So much for "Lifetime"

I, too, was one of the "lifetime subscribers" who did not receive what I paid for. Even long before my service was unceremoniously canceled, I hadn't bothered to use the service for several years because it was clunky and made accessing the internet much more difficult for me. I rarely complain about products, but the sheer audacity of this company to ask me to pay more for something I've already purchased and that they have reneged on is perhaps the most disrespectful thing I can think of they can do to a former customer. Don't waste your time with a company that thinks they can get all the benefits of buying a business and accept none of the liability... the customers didn't wrong you... if anyone did, it's the ones you acquired the company from.

Deceptive Practices and Poor Customer Service

I purchased a "lifetime" subscription to VPNSecure, trusting that the service would be available for as long as I needed it. However, without any prior notice, my account was abruptly deactivated. The new owners claimed they were unaware of these lifetime deals upon acquisition, which is hard to believe given the widespread availability of this information online.

To make matters worse, there was no communication until after the service was terminated. I reached out multiple times through their customer portal but received no response. Instead of honoring the original agreement or offering a refund, they proposed discounted plans, expecting me to pay again for a service I had already purchased.

This experience has been incredibly disappointing. I feel misled and undervalued as a customer. I cannot recommend VPNSecure to anyone seeking a reliable and trustworthy VPN service.
