Review summary

Based on reviews, created with AI

Most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the service, citing frequent delays and unreliable schedules, which often led to missed connections and extended travel times. People also found the customer service to be unhelpful, with difficulties in obtaining information or assistance, and staff sometimes appearing indifferent to passenger concerns. The pricing was also a point of contention, with many feeling that the high cost did not align with the poor quality of service received. Some people were dissatisfied with the staff, noting instances of rudeness, particularly in the train cafe, and a perceived lack of awareness regarding passenger comfort, such as cold carriages. Additionally, some reviewers mentioned issues with the location, specifically the lack of customer service presence at stations, making it confusing for first-time visitors to navigate the different service levels.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that, and apologize for bad experience.

You don't give us any details about where you travelled (and when), so it's hard to give any feedback to our staff.

Just curious, why one star? Was everything about the travel as horrible as it can get, because of the one rude staff?

Hi, most of the trains in Norway run on time, as they should. So far in 2025, 88 percent of the trains left on time.

The airport train (Flytoget) and our train, run on the exact same tracks. If the tracks are closed, none of us get to the airport.

Hi and thanks for the feedback.

About 88 percent of the trains in Norway, were on time the first six months of 2025.

https://www.banenor.no/reise-og-trafikk/punktlighetsstatistikk/

This is better than Germany and Sweden, and about the same as Denmark.

We are sorry to hear that you are having problems because of delays.

Most delays are due to disruptions on the infrastructure, which is fully owned and run by Bane NOR: tracks, signals, power and all stations.

When the infrastructure is working, our trains are on time between 98 and 99 percent of the departures.

12 percent delayed is not good enough. Most of the delays are due to errors on the infrastructure. When the infrastructure is working, 98 to 99 percent of our trains are on time.

Norwegian trains are more punctual than German and Swedish trains, and about the same level as Danish trains.

In a WEF-survey from 2019, rail in Norway were ranked 14 of 37 in Europe.

Terribly service

Terribly service. Always something going on with the lines, or the signals, or the trains, or whatever... all year around. Doesn't matter if it's Summer or Winter, or train trip will be suspended, you will have to swap to a bus, or take a taxi if you're too short of time... Too many delays. Unbelievable crap service in a rich country like Norway.

Hi, most delays on the trains are due to errors on the infrastructure, which is owned and run by Bane NOR: tracks, signals, electricity and the stations.

When the infrastructure works, most of our trains are perfectly on time - between 98 and 99 percent of the trains.

Unfortunately there are quite a few errors on the infrastructure, because it's old and underfunded.

Bad train service

Norway sadly don't have a reliable train service, always with delays and with quite expensive tickets. The route connecting Lillestrøm with Oslo Airport it's often delayed without reason. The schedules are not updated in Google Maps or Ruter, so you will find the 'surprise' when you arrive to the train station.
Sunny, with snow, rain or without nothing, the train it's going to be late.

Hi, and thanks for the feedback.

Norway has some delays, more than the best nations in Europe, but we are somewhere in the middle on the stats.

Trains in Norway are about as punctual as in Sweden and France, and more punctual than Italy, Finland, Denmark and Germany.

So far in 2025, about 88 percent of the trains ran on time.

Most of the delays are due to errors on the infrastructure: rails, power, signals and stations, all owned and run by Bane NOR.

This causes problems for our passengers, for which we are sorry.

Train got delayed 6 hrs – pregnant woman not refunded

Train got delayed 6 hrs. We got stuck in the cold mid-way from Bergen to Oslo. We lost our flights, had to buy new ones. Stayed in the hotel overnight. And they refuse to refund anything beyond the 50% of initial train ticket price, as we didn't have a train ticket from Oslo to Oslo airport. Why? Because my wife is pregnant and we took and Uber from Oslo S to the hotel next to the airport. Garbage behavior, totally horrid experience.

Hi, we are sorry that we haven't replied before. There are about 15-20 messages we haven't replied to, so we're going through them now.

The terms for travel are listed on our website, at the bottom of ALL pages online. They are also listed when you buy a ticket.

Here: https://www.vy.no/en/conditions-and-privacy/conditions-of-carriage#item-2b711776cfed

These are normal terms for rail, and completely in accordance with rules in Norway.

The terms clearly state what we cover when the train is delayed and has different terms depending on what happened.

We are sorry to hear that you were delayed. Sometimes the lines are closed, and we can't run the trains. This is similar to airports being closed due to weather etc.

We highly recommend all travelers - Norwegians and non-Norwegians – to have a good travel insurance, especially when traveling abroad. Unexpected problems due to weather can rack up expenses and insurance makes sure you get home without breaking the bank.

This company's dismal rating is well deserved. The only things you can sort of count on these days is that their trains will either be cancelled or delayed, that they won't keep you updated, and that their customer service will be anything but helpful once they stop running around like headless chickens.

Once again, several trains in a row cancelled with no updates..

Hi, it is not correct that you can "count on" trains being delayed. Most trains actually run on time. In 2023, about 88 percent of trains in Norway ran on time.

But - there are challenges, most of them related to how much Norway has chosen to use on train infrastructure and trains.

Bane NOR - who owns and run the infrastructure claim they need over 30 billion Norwegian kroner to put what's needed in proper shape. Not included new projects; just service and necessary upgrades.

Also, many trains are over 40 years and should have been replaced years ago.

• New local trains: https://www.norsketog.no/en/projects/nye-lokaltog
• New long distance trains: https://www.norsketog.no/en/projects/nye-fjerntog

These two factors combined, are the cause of almost all delays on the railways in Norway. This unfortunately makes train travel harder for you and other passengers.

Train from Gol via Myrdal to Flam…

Train from Gol via Myrdal to Flam delayed by nearly 4 hours so we missed our Myrdal train. No problem as we were promised we could travel on the next one. Still would have got us to Flam in time for the ferry to Bergen. Just as we approached Myrdal told we could not get that train as it was full! Alternative carry on to Voss and get bus to Flam which would arrive hours after the ferry had sailed.
Submitted compensation claim VY0355420 for train and ferry. Told it would take 10 days to be looked at. Now told it will be up to 10 weeks due to unexpected and extreme weather in Norway recently.
10 weeks! and not quite sure what extreme weather there has been?

Hi, normally when the lines are as long as 10 weeks, it's due to infrastructure problems around Oslo, where lots of people submit claims.

We normally process refund claims in 2-10 business days.

EnVYification

Vy is a great example of the phenomenon called "enshittification". Writing this from a night bus, in the light of blinding blue leds. Driver just informed us that we could buy a "comfort package" with a sleep mask. For only 100 NOK you get respite from the blue leds they installed, what a deal!
The bus also now requires pre-order, the selling point a couple of years ago was that you didn't need that... but they need the opportunity to upsell you reserved seats! Complete with dark pattern webui which tries to fool you into thinking reserved seats are necessary.
They know how to do dark UI patterns, but they don't know how to test their site in Firefox! It just refuses to go on (without explanation) with the ticket purchase if you don't use Chrome.
The worst is, they've surely paid a lot of people to make this service so much worse than it used to be.

You poor guy who's paid to respond to these, can you please inform your boss that he failed his KPIs? It doesn't matter what they were, they failed them.

7 hour delay on night train both ways, no compensation

I bought 3 tickets for the night train from stockholm to abisko, travelling with two friends to Kungsleden. Our train was 7 hours delayed at the least, and we thus missed an entire day of hiking.

On the return journey the night train was again delayed >7 hours. During both these times there was little to no information provided and I ended up having about 2 hours of sleep in 48hours on the return journey, due to their complete lack of regard for their stranded customers.

Now according to their own policy I should be entitled to at least 50% compensation, and to that end I've filled out forms at vy and resplus. For these efforts I've received the following response:

"Hello,

Your case re. delay compensation, with case number RTG414626P has been forwarded to for further processing. If you should have any future questions about this case, please contact them via mail at .

Please do not respond to this message as this is an automated response."

A form where they failed to fill out any information I could use. Great. Now I've tried calling them on multiple occassions but I'm consistently met with an automatic message stating they are closed, despite calling in their opening hours. I have no way of contacting them and it appears their promise of compensation is an outright lie. Needless to say I would not recommend anyone to rely on their service.

Hi, and thanks for the feedback. There are unfortunately several weeks processing time, on refunds for the Swedish market.

Earlier this year, the line in the north of Sweden were broken due to a flight train derailing. It took quite some time to fix, and after that the weather caused lots of delays and cancellations.

Due to all this, lots of people have moved their travels, of which many are from outside of Sweden. This has caused a massive stream of calls, e-mails and also refunds.

We are sorry that it takes time. We will process all refunds submitted on our website, it just takes time as there are many times more refunds to be processed than normal.

You may want to talk to your travel insurance company in the meantime, if this causes economical problems.

Again, we are sorry for the delays.

Horrible service

Horrible service, every year there are strikes where they at times have had unavailable transport with their transportation and have no other alternative transport and if you ask for compensation on your monthly card they will tell you that they don't do refunds or compensation regarding striking. Another thing is that on at least one out of every 5 trains doesn't have an available bathroom because the bathroom is "out of service" if your trains bathroom is out of service they shouldn't use the train in the first place. The tickets are expensive enough as it is without having even a bathroom on board nor do they have any vending machines or anything like basically human necessities. I think this is inhumane and gross negligence from the side of vy. I travel primarily with the l1 spikkestad - lillestrøm route which has the most cancelations and delays out of all of the lines, I edited my answer for your reply underneath, since you said I didn't provide enough information.

Hi, it's not easy to answer, as you don't provide any information about where you travel.

It is not correct that "at least one out of every 5 trains doesn't have an available bathroom". Sometimes, bathrooms are messed up by travelers, or broken during a trip. When this happens, we have the option between cancelling the train or drive it back to the train yard in Oslo or Drammen for repairs.

We are sorry that you have gotten trains with no bathrooms at several occasions. It is not the norm.
